That 79 cup game v the tarts was my first Derby match. It started a series of firsts for me. The semi win v Aberdeen was my first trip to Hampden and the final was my first Scottish Cup final loss!! Sadly not the last🙄
it was the one and only time I met a person who saw us win the cup before 2016.

Dixie Deans could have farted on the pitch and accidentally wafted the ball in the net against Hibs during that era.

Hibs left it late to stretch their lead over The Rangers to five points Jason Cummings gave HIBS the lead on the half hour when he was played in by Liam Craig for his 14th goal of the season

Ibra Sekajja thought he had bagged Livi a late share of the points but Franck Dja Djedje rose the highest to head home a Lewis Stevenson cross with two minutes to go

The famous Murrayfield Ice Rink match

Many in the media were predicting a Cup upset as Stenhousemuir had knocked Aberdeen out of the Cup 2-0 in the previous round but HIBS won this match easily to march on to the semi-finals

    11/3/1967 Scottish Cup Round 3

    Hibernian 1 v 1 Aberdeen

    Stevenson 16

Aberdeen were a dour team and set up defensively for this fixture They had to resort to plan B when Eric Stevenson crashed a left footed shot high past Bobby Clark from 18 yards on the quarter hour

“In the next round a real blood and thunder clash against Aberdeen I scored possibly the best goal of my career Receiving a one two from Pat Quinn just inside the box I hesitated briefly before crashing a thunderous first time left foot drive past Bobby Clark into his top left hand corner for my first ever goal in the Scottish Cup “

Aberdeen were forced out of their shell and HIBS appeared to be coping admirably until Jimmy Smith punished a moment of slackness in the 86th minute

    11/3/1961 Scottish Cup Round 4

    11/3/1950 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 4 v 2 Dundee

    Reilly 2
    Smith
    Johnstone

A horror show from young Dundee goalkeeper Bill Brown handed HIBS the points

For the first he clashed with Lawrie Reilly pulling his jersey back the ball broke free and trickled over the line the Referee decided to dispense with the penalty and awarded the goal The second a hopeful cross from Gordon Smith sailed over his head and in off the back post The third he allowed a tame shot from Reilly to squirm from his grasp and over the line

Dundee pulled a goal back through Gerrie but their hopes of a revival were crushed when Bobby Johnstone added a fourth

Gerrie scored a late consolation for Dundee to make the score more respectable

Bill Brown would go on to have a distinguished career with Dundee Tottenham Hotspur and Scotland winning the Scottish League Cup, English First Division, 2 x FA Cups, 2 x Charity Shields and the ECWC

    11/3/1925 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 4 v 1 Rangers

    McColl 3 68
    Walker 18
    Halligan 43

In arranging for a five o’ clock kick off HIBS Manager Alec Maley was taking a gamble with the weather He was rewarded for his optimism as the light held out Not only were the conditions perfect but a crowd of over 20000 turned out

HIBS ran amok and led by three at half time with counters from ‘Darkie’ Walker, Jimmy McColl and Johnny Halligan

In the second half Jimmy McColl added a fourth as Hibernian set about their work with renewed vigour and always looked certain winners even if they continued to miss chances at the rate they had been doing The score was not at all flattering to the Irishmen who with better finishing the final score would have been overwhelming

Hibs were now second in the league having pushed Rangers into third place Airdrie were now top of the League but it was very tight

Nice link to Tortolano’s video, some great goals from super Joe.

Interesting to read about Bill Brown having a nightmare. Went on to become a great goalie for Dundee and Scotland and perhaps most of all for the Spurs double winning team. Someone deserves credit for persevering with him at Dundee.

Played at Logie Green ( St Bernard’s) the only Scottish Cup Final to take place outside Glasgow

Hibs had defeated Renton 2-1 in the semi-final but Renton put in a protest and the SFA after completing their investigation only informed HIBS 24 hours before kick off that the result was upheld and that they would be playing in the Scottish Cup Final

Hibs kicked off with the sun in their eyes but one could tell that the strain of the three week long protest and court case had taken its toll on the players as they appeared to be suffering from over anxiety and seemed unable to go about their normal business

No complaints though the better team on the day won even although their first two goals had a huge element of fluke about them The first a soft penalty - ball to hand- the taker hit the ball straight at the goalkeeper that he unwittingly helped over the line The second the goalkeeper attempted to clear but only helped the ball into the net The third was a well taken headed goal

Hibs’ consolation was a well worked move involving Pat Murray and Willie Groves finished off by newcomer John O’Neill

I'd actually used quite a bit of holiday leave, and money, for the first one and wasn't feeling very enthusiastic about doing the same thing twice in the space of a couple of months.

Just checked to see when this thread started and sad to say we have only got a couple of weeks to go before the years up even if Billy does do a 29th February “special”. It’s been one of my favourite threads on .net ever, brought back some great memories (and some not so great ones too). What have you got planned to replace it Billy?

Enjoying these, as ever. Think the Partick game was one where the supporters' bus I was on got stuck in horrendous traffic on the M8 and we didn't end up getting to Firhill until just before half-time. We tried to negotiate a cheaper entrance fee at the turnstile, but they were having none of it, so a number of folk just went to the pub!

Another post of memories.Thank you Billy.

Although Lawrie's retirement was announced he still had time to score a last goal against Rangers in a league match at Easter Road on the Monday before the cup final. In the cup match against Third Lanark I think Fraser's scorcher was actually a 3 yarder from a Baker cut back. Third Lanark had a very wee goalie Jocky Robertson and one of Joe's goals was an easy lob which Jocky fumbled into the net. Thirds got their revenge the following season which was in yesterday's post and as you said was Gordon's last game -the result of probably Harry Swan's worst ever decision (of which there were a few as he lost his grip).

    Brilliant thread !
    Has me reminiscing a lot.

An earlier post mentions result v Valencia March 1963 in old Fairs Cup.
    (Europa now of course)
    .I was at that game
I was also at East End Park with Jimmy O and other family members to see Dunfermline beat Valencia 6-2 same season.
Jimmy's Hibs debut was in that tourney in an earlier round v Utrecht.
Valencia beat The Pars at home 4-0, so went through on "away goals" rule.

Jock Stein was Dunfermline's manager and future Tornado 16yr old Alex Edwards scored 1st goal at home.
Amazingly, Valencia also beat Celtic !.
    3 trips to Scotland !
Valencia went on to win the Fairs Cup.

We would meet Valencia again a couple of seasons later and go out in a play off game, after first two legs ended in stalemate.
    2-0 and 2-0 !

    Edit; Correction
Dunfermline and Valencia played a 3rd game (play off) in Lisbon.
    The Spanish won 1-0.

Billy's going to start a 'On this day in Hearts history' thread.
