    10/2/2001 Scottish League Premier Division

    Hibernian 4 v 2 St Mirren

    Sauzee
    Zitelli 2
    Latapy

The New West Stand was still being built when this game took place.

David Zitelli repaid Manager Alex McLeish’s faith in him for restoring him to the starting line-up by firing in a double

Franck Sauzee gave HIBS the lead by firing home a trademark free-kick Ricky Gillies then gave second bottom Buddies the lead by firing in a double with a penalty and a deflected shot either side of half-time

Zitelli then struck with his double the first after Latapy played him in and he fired home off Roy’s left hand post the second when he dispossessed Paul Rudden when he dallied on the ball and fired the ball through the goalkeeper

Latapy settled the game on 80 minutes when he lost possession to Gillies but won it back and tenaciously carried on to fire home a brilliant powerful left footed drive

    Rangers 2 v 3 Hibernian

    Smith
    Turnbull
    Johnstone

102342 fans fillied Ibrox to watch this intriguing battle of Rangers’ Iron Curtain Defence versus the imperious Famous Five

Simpson gave the Scottish Cup holders an early lead and Rangers retreated into their shell putting up their defensive wall

This enabled HIBS who had got off to a nervous start to find their rhythm and get their passing game together HIBS equalised just before half-time when Gordon Smith met an Ormond cross on the volley and the ball fairly flew into the Rangers net

Into the second half and HIBS obviously hadn’t learned their lesson from the first half when Simpson scored his and Rangers’ second

Fatally Rangers reverted to type and flooded their defence

HIBS were known for their flexibility and imagination and took the game by the scruff of the neck

Eddie Turnbull equalised with one of his cannonball specials and Rangers now found themselves in a quandary do they stick or twist? Problem was they were now pinned back into their own half unable to get out as the green and white jerseys swarmed around their box

With nine minutes to go HIBS sealed their win

Hibs had a freekick outside the Rangers box Rangers put up a nine man wall Eddie Turnbull lined up for a thunderbolt but he played the ball short to Willie Ormond who quickly passed it to Johnstone who fired home from a tight angle

The game against Rangers in the Scottish Cup was billed as the biggest game in Britain. My mum and dad were at the game they said there was a huge hibs support that day.

Just to show I read it. Bobby Combe is referenced in the Rangers cup report but isn’t in the listed team.Mick Gallacher is listed at left half.I’ve got both their autographs he said smugly.Combe could of course have played in half a dozen other positions that day.

    Well spotted

Combe did not play that day

I really need to check my sources

    Nelson

The beginning of the end for Terry Butcher

Grant Murray brought his merry band to Easter Road a side that hadn’t scored a goal in 2014 full of ex Hibs players future HIBS players HIBS supporters and Ross Callachan

Moon gave Raith an early lead Sam Stanton then equalised with an exquisite strike off Ross Laidlaw’s left hand post from 20 yards

Callachan then hit the post but in reality it was a brilliant save by Ben Williams before HIBS supporting Dougie Hill put Raith ahead once again with a deft flick

Just before half-time Michael Nelson pulled HIBS back level with a fine header from a Liam Craig corner

Into the second half and Grant Anderson scored the winning goal half way through the half with what looked like a backward head-flick that seemed to deceive Williams all ends up

Hibs would win their next League match against Ross County but would not win another game until their first leg Premier Play-Off game at Hamilton

8/2/1933 Scottish Cup Round 2 Replay

    Hibernian 1 v 0 Aberdeen

    Halligan 84

This replay on Wednesday 8th February saw a terrific crowd of 24000 at the Holy Ground and the old war horse Johnny Halligan scored the only goal of the game with six minutes to go to give the HIBS support something to celebrate

‘The HIBS goalkeeper George Blyth is evidently a believer in mascots he had a youngster in full HIBS uniform and he carted about with him several harps and horses shoes and they did him good’

    8/2/1919 Scottish League Division One

It was a sad shocked Hibernian who played Dumbarton at the Holy Ground. The green Flag was lowered to half mast a minutes silence was observed and the players wore black arm bands in memory of the late legendary Manager Dan McMichael

The match had to be played and was played in a subdued atmosphere and was won when Horace Williams latched on to a poor goal kick from the Dumbarton goalkeeper and he dispatched the ball into the vacant net

Many soldiers were returning from the frontline not sure if they still had a football club to support

HIBS only recorded five wins in this season and finished rock bottom of the league having played 38 fixtures

Future HIBS Manager Bobby Templeton played right back in this game

The sensation of the Peebles game was that Willie Ormond scored an absolute rasper with a right foot shot.An old guy standing beside me claimed he’d never seen him kick the ball with his right foot never mind score.

Little known fact!! Gene Pitney had a huge hit in USA with the theme tune from The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance (written by Burt Bacharach) but the song never featured in the film!

I had never seen that 2-2 game with Celtc at Hampden, thanks Billy. Typical OF bias with 2 reps from the uglies in the studio. Also, Jock Brown interviews John Collins about Celtc, then 20 seconds into interviewing Jim Leighton about Hibs, he asks him about Celtc!!! Plus ca change!! I also noticed huge swathes of empty seating unoccupied by the greatest fans in the world!

I agree blatant West Coast bias

One of the Premiership clubs had Jock Brown as their PPV commentator in the current season and I have to say he was excellent

If you enjoyed that game well worth checking out the Motherwell game in the ‘Marinello’ thread par excellence

Little known fact!! Gene Pitney had a huge hit in USA with the theme tune from The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance (written by Burt Bacharach) but the song never featured in the film!
Saw him in the Festival theatre a year or so before he died. Still had a very strong voice.

And then something had gotten hold of his heart.

Would you believe he died in Cardiff-?

Apart from the performance memorable for me as the night my Les Paul was knocked over and the head split in two.... Awful day.

It's not a real Les Paul if it hasn't had a headstock repair

    12/2/1887 Scottish Cup Final

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Dumbarton

    Montgomery
    Groves

Green shirted Hibernian were first onto the park led by their captain James McGhee and they received a rapturous welcome while Dumbarton in their blue and white striped jerseys were politely welcomed by their supporters who only numbered a few thousand

Hibernian won the toss booked the wind and Dumbarton kicked off on a slippery surface which was very hard underneath Play swung from end to end with defences on top When the forwards did get a chance their shooting was wild and the goalkeepers had very few saves to make Near the end of the first half play became rough and the Referee was kept busy

Play continued in a similar fashion in the second half up until the 60th minute when Aitken put Dumbarton ahead with an unsaveable shot after which they used spoiling tactics to try and hold on to their lead This was a mistake as the Irish crowd roared Hibernian on to one of their famous fight-backs

The forwards responded with some brilliant play and a strong run and angled shot from Phil Clarke which Dumbarton’s international goalkeeper could not hold allowed James Montgomery to follow through and fire home the equaliser

The green Jerseys now went all out for the winner and dominated the game with their strength and skill Following a Dumbarton corner the defence cleverly played the ball to Paddy Lafferty who fed Willie Groves and went on a decoy run down the right wing ‘Darling’ Willie Groves then went on one of his famous mazy dribbling runs that took him right into the heart of the Dumbarton defence and he coolly hit the ball home while Dumbarton vainly tried to claim offside

The celebrating on the terraces was wild For the last ten minutes of the game the noise was indescribable and when the final whistle went the Hibernian players were carried off the field of play shoulder high

There was an air of disbelief about what had just happened Hibernian had done the impossible and had won the greatest prize in Scottish football The poor team from Edinburgh’s Irish neighbourhood had actually won the Scottish Cup

Hibs Tobin Lundy Fagan McGhee McGinn McLaren Montgomery Groves Lafferty Smith and Clarke
