Spot on. The hypocrisy at heightened times like these is distasteful. At the other end of the spectrum, few were fooled by the sudden celebrity clamour to be seen to be the most 'right on' at the height of the BLM protests.

This attempt to impeach Trump a few days before his tenure comes to an end also smacks of being PR led, bearing in mind it has no chance of success. The Democrats should be careful what they wish for or they'll end up making a martyr out of him. Just let him leave the White House and doubtless (along with a good number of the 75 million or so who voted for him) adopt the mantle of being 'the real president in exile'. Even in the unlikely event he were to run again in 2024 as a Ross Perot type candidate he'd only split the Republican vote and ensure a Democrat win.
He definitely needs punishing. If history has taught us anything, then it's that narcissists and fascists only understand strength and consequences. Any attempt at appeasement or clemency will only be interpreted as weakness.

Yes, I agree. I just get the impression that the Democrats are approaching this as a more of an opportunity to showboat rather than punishing him in any way that will matter to somebody of Trump's mentality.

I also think Germany and France have a point when calling into question the way the social media giants have gone about things:

More power slipping away from him. Trump org has only months to go now I think.

This is more a point on US Politics in general, but I was just reading the flowery tributes to some guy called Sheldon Adelson, that just passed away aged 87, from various Republicans like George W Bush, Mitch McConnell and Trump Jr.

Apparently he was "A Great American", "A Great Patriot", etc.

This made me curious as to who he was and why they loved him so much and it turns out he was a massive donor to The Republican Party.

Apparently, paying US Politicians to influence their policies makes somebody "A Great American" and "A Great Patriot".

I would actually have called that Bribery of People in Public Office, but what do I know...

p.s. Incidentally, he has also been described by the same people as "A Friend of Israel" and that "The US-Israel relationship was stronger because of him", but that's a subject fraught with pitfalls and anybody discussing it is in danger of being labelled an Anti-Semite... so I'm not going there ;-)

This is why America isn’t the great bastion of democracy that all countries strive to emulate. Their politicians (especially Republicans) are bought and paid for my special interest groups (NRA) or whole industries (Pharmaceuticals/Cigs/Defence).

They will never represent the people when money is changing hands.

We have a similar problem with the UK government and specifically the Tories.

It looks like Mitch McConnell will vote in favour of impeachment. That makes it much more likely to happen.

As soon as the donors started backing away, the republicans started looking for ways to get rid of Trump.

America needs to punish Trump and they know it. If he goes scott free, then it leaves the door wide open for the next nutcase to endanger their Holy democracy. Trump is going down and it's not going to be pretty.

They need a majority in the house which they have but they need 17 republicans to switch in the senate. Not clear if that's likely yet.

It won't happen until after Trump leaves do number crunching just now is fairly meaningless.

However, given that the GOP senators won't actually be removing their president, and the fact that many of them won't want Trump to run in 2024, there's a chance that the impeachment will be accepted by the Senate.

He's going to be there for another week though. I wonder what else can happen in that time...

I'm sure he'll still have a bunch of pardons to hand out, and maybe some more Presidential medals of freedom to others as deserving as Jim Jordan

This is why there is a chance the republicans in senate may turn on Trump. Nothing to do with doing the right thing. All about the dollars.

Yes, I meant to mention that's the main reason they don't want him. No doubt it's the most compelling.

Large numbers relatively of federal death sentences carried out. Looks like he is wielding whatever power he has left and has a lust for blood. That power should be removed from him immediately

That's Donnie impeached for a second time, the James Hunt. First time in American history. Ten Republicans have voted in favour of impeachment.
