The greatest game in history and every hibby that was there will never forget it

It remains Hearts’ record home league defeat to this day only matched by Celtic in the Scottish Cup in 2013

It was the sort of performance every supporter dreams about

Every HIBS player was at the peak of their game

There was the dashing of the full backs John Brownlie and Erich Schaedler

There was the complete mastery of the midfield : the industry and drive of Pat Stanton the virtuosity of Alex Cropley and complementing them Alex Edwards whose special qualities reminded us how few players can really pass the ball well

On the left the speed of Arthur Duncan was devastating

In the middle the forceful Alan Gordon who won every ball in the air, challenged with determination and embarrassed those who had discarded him and Jimmy O’Rourke who like a hungry dog snapped for any crumbs

Not forgetting Scotland international goalkeeper Jim Herriot and Jim Black and John Blackley at the back who snuffed out and swept up everything Hearts had to offer in attack after an initial flurry when Hearts could easily have scored

On the day that the UK joined the EEC HIBS had to win by six clear goals to overtake Celtic at the top of the Scottish First Division

The green machine just kept going forwards sheer football delight

Sorry to be pedantic, Billy, but if you were in the Gorgie Rd end at a derby in 1984, it was Hibs fans only...

...as it was full segregation at that point and that was the Hibs end.

    3/1/2015 Scottish League Championship

    Hearts 1 v 1 Hibernian

    Cummings 23

Hibs had renewed confidence after disposing of Rangers 4-0 at Easter Road

Hearts had no answer to Scott Allan and HIBS took the lead when Jason Cummings cushioned a superb Allan ball that took out the whole defence into the jambo net

Jamie Walker equalised with a long range strike to maintain Hearts’ superb unbeaten start to the campaign

    Apologies for the partisan commentary

    3/1/2010 Scottish League SPL

    Hibernian 1 v 1 Hearts

    Stokes 54

Darren McCormack and Ruben Palazuelos sent off on 57 minutes for fighting

Michael Stewart played for Hearts and got booked

    3/1/2004 Scottish League SPL

    Hibernian 3 v 2 Partick Thistle

    O’Connor
    Dobbie
    Whittaker

HIBS can consider themselves fortunate to escape with a victory here

HIBS raced into a first half lead through Garry O’Connor and Stephen Dobbie but Thistle came right into the game in the second half through goals from James Grady and a fortunate second when Daniel Andersson punched the ball off Madaschi’s head into the unguarded net

With Thistle looking the more likely Stephen Whittaker grabbed the winner with 6 minutes to go when he fired home from the edge of the box

To sum up Thistle’s luck Fleming hit the crossbar in the last minute

    3/1/1987 Scottish League Premier Division

    Falkirk 1 v 3 Hibernian

    Bell
    McCluskey pen
    McBride

Alex Miller had taken over from John Blackley in December and HIBS pitched up at dilapidated frost bound Brockville with three impressive new signings Dougie Bell Tommy McIntyre and Graham Mitchell

Dougie Bell opened the scoring with a long range strike to be followed by a Beastie penalty and a Joe McBride counter

    3/1/1983 Scottish League Premier Division

    Hibernian 1 v 1 St Mirren

    Duncan

Chic Charnley made his debut for St Mirren in this match after signing from Rutherglen Glencairn

Arthur Duncan played and scored despite having flu and never stopped running

Alan Sneddon with an own goal replied for Saints

    3/1/1981 Scottish League First Division

    Hibernian 1 v 0 Dumbarton

Gary Murray endeared himself to his new fans by scoring the very important only goal of the game

    3/1/1972 Scottish League First Division

    East Fife 2 v 1 Hibernian

    Stanton pen

HIBS lost 2-1 to stuffy little East Fife for the second time in this season

More importantly Alex Edwards was dismissed early in the second half to start a relationship with the Methil side that would not end well over the coming seasons

    3/1/1970 Scottish League Division One

    Raith Rovers 0 v 3 Hibernian

    Graham 37 89
    Cormack 60

Missing from the team on this day was Peter Marinello who unknown to the HIBS support had been transferred to Arsenal

    3/1/1967 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Dunfermline

    Cormack
    McGraw

The first match since the famous 6-5 win at East End in September

Goals were at a premium in this encounter with Pars keeper Bent Martin performing heroics to keep the score down but could do little to stop two cracking strikes

    3/1/1959 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 2 v 2 Motherwell

    J Baker 2

After defeating Hearts 3-1 at Tiny on New Years Day 33000 fans rolled up at Easter Road expecting more of the same but the Motherwell side were no pushovers as it contained Ancell’s Babes Pat Quinn Willie Hunter Ian St John and John Martis among others

    3/1/1956 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 1 v 0 Clyde

    Turnbull pen 65

    3/1/1953 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 7 v 2 Motherwell

    Reilly 3
    Turnbull 2 (1 pen)
    Smith
    Ormond

    3/1/1950 Scottish League Division One

    Aberdeen 0 v 3 Hibernian

    Ormond
    Smith 2

24 hours after losing to Hearts 1-2 in front of 65000 HIBS travelled to Aberdeen and despite Aberdeen having the best of the first half HIBS eventually overcame them to turn out convincing winners

Eddie Turnbull missed a penalty that he hit with that much force that when it hit the post the ball did not bounce until it reached the halfway line

Four of the Famous Five scoring in the same game, which I think I've noticed a couple of times.

Extremely unlikely, but was there ever a game when all five scored?

    8/4/1950 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 6 v 3 Clyde

    Smith
    Johnstone
    Reilly
    Turnbull
    Ormond 2

This was the penultimate game of the season and HIBS had one final game to play at Ibrox versus Rangers in a title decider

The Iron Curtain Defence versus The Famous Five

HIBS drew 0-0 in front of 115000 fans but Rangers had one game in hand

Rangers had to travel to Third Lanark and could not afford to lose

    Rangers drew 1-1

Thirds missed a penalty meaning that Rangers had won the League on goal average

Willie Waddell shoulder barged the Thirds keeper over the line when he had both hands on the ball legal at that time

Hibs had the better goal difference

Bet you wish you hadn’t asked ?

It's not easy when senility kicks in Billy, but we appreciate the effort (even with the occasional error).

    5/1/2014 Scottish League Premiership

    Dundee United 2 v 2 Hibernian

    Liam Craig 38 61 pen

    The beginning of the end

Two goals either side of half-time put Terry Butcher’s Hibees in the driving seat but the introduction of subs David Goodwillie and Brian Graham paid late dividends for the Arabs

HIBS would not win another match until the first leg of the Premier Division playoff Hamilton away

Hibs Williams Forster McGivern Hanlon Nelson Cairney Craig Robertson Stevenson Heffernan and Collins

    Subs Stanton Tudur-Jones

    Att 7862

    https://youtu.be/-UK6-SMfckY

    5/1/1991 Scottish League Premier Division

    Celtic 1 v 1 Hibernian

    Paul Wright 29

This watch was played in a gale force wind and driving rain

HIBS took the lead following a short corner when Murdo MacLeod played it to Neil Orr and the Celtic defence were slow to respond to the danger as Paul Wright swept Orr’s cross into the net

Tommy Coyne equalised just after half-time when the HIBS defence were posted missing at a Chris Morris free-kick and the unmarked Tommy Coyne joyfully flicked the ball home

Celtic sweeper Peter Grant was sent off in 68 minutes for pulling down Kano when he was through on goal just as he was about to pull the trigger on the edge of the 18 yard box

Man of the Match John Collins Celtic

Hibs Goram Cooper McIntyre Kane Mitchell McLeod Milne Wright Orr Hamilton and Tortolano

    Att 20500

    5/1/1980 Scottish League Premier Division

    Kilmarnock 3 v 1 Hibernian

    Campbell

Relegation haunted HIBS totally dominated this game but could not score missing loads of chances

Ally MacLeod hit the post with a penalty George Best had a shot cleared off the line Kilmarnock winger Bobby Street scored two goals against the run of play

Colin Campbell gave HIBS a lifeline with a header in the second half but Street completed his hat-trick with a superb overhead kick

HIBS McArthur Brazil Duncan Rae Paterson McNamara Callachan MacLeod Higgins Campbell and Best

    Sub Lambie for Duncan

    Att 6092

    5/1/1977 Scottish League Premier Division

    Hibernian 0 v 0 Dundee United

Hibs totally dominated this game but found it impossible to get past a defence superbly marshalled by David Narey anytime they did make the breakthrough they found Hamish McAlpine to be in tremendous form

Best performers for HIBS were Blackley Fyfe and McGhee

Hibs McDonald Brownlie Spalding Bremner Stewart Blackley Edwards Fyfe McGhee Smith and Duncan

    Att 7700

    5/1/1974 Scottish League Division One

    East Fife 0 v 3 Hibernian

    Cropley
    O’Rourke 2 ( 1 pen )

Hibs were starting to suss East Fife out and two quick goals by Cropley and O’Rourke knocked all the fight out of them

HIBS should have had more to show for their second half exploits than an O’Rourke penalty in a typically physical encounter

Hibs McArthur Bremner Schaedler Stanton Black Blackley Edwards O’Rourke Gordon Cropley and Duncan

    Att 5959

    5/1/1957 Scottish League Division One

    Falkirk 0 v 1 Hibernian

    John Fraser 19

This game was settled by a fine piece of opportunism by John Fraser

Winger Andy Aitken made his debut in this game and Falkirk centre forward Bert Ormond brother of Willie was carried off with a broken ankle late in the first half

HIBS Wren Grant Paterson Nicol Plenderleith Hughes Aitken Turnbull Fraser Thomson and Ormond

    Att 8000

    5/1/1952 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 8 v 0 Stirling Albion

    Reilly 3
    Combe 3
    Turnbull 2 (1 pen)

Scotland was gripped by the winter weather and this match was played on a snowy surface that cut up nicely

HIBS gave Albion a footballing lesson racing into a three goal lead in 15 minutes through Reilly 2 and Bobby Combe All three goals coming from Gordon Smith crosses

Both goalscorers would go on to collect hat-tricks and Eddie Turnbull would score a double including the usual penalty

Smith may not have scored but his overall play passing and crossing was brilliant throughout

Hibs had scored 65 goals in 20 starts The result put HIBS top of the first Division a position they would hold until the end of the season

Hibs Younger Govan Howie Buchanan Paterson Gallacher Smith Johnstone Reilly Turnbull and Combe

    Att 23000

    5/1/1946 Scottish League Southern A

5/1/52 Might be a slight error here as hat trick hero Bobby Combe doesn't appear in the team line up

That season we drew 18 out of 36 league games.

Incidentally, is that the year that Tom Hart wouldn't allow the games at ER to be shown on TV?

I can't remember what the reason was for it but it was definitely around that time.

It was the sixth member of the FF

I had Willie Ormond on my mind still thinking about his poor brother getting carried off

    Well spotted
