Malpas's goal was a great individual effort, unlike his style of play in the early-1980s where he and his fellow defenders seemed to be having a competition of who can pass the ball back to Hamish McAlpine the most times.

It was about this time that Hibs went on a great run against Utd at Easter Road, lasting some years, which was great, as before then we really struggled against them. Also good, as it was around then I started meeting up before and after games with a colleague of mine who'd just moved down from Dundee and was a big Utd fan

My memory says that Utd started to struggle tactically when they banned the pass back to the goalie.

While they were brutal for pass backs and their very well drilled offside trap (normally bang on the halfway line), I think it was the Bosman ruling that really accelerated their decline.

    29/12/2013 Scottish League Premiership

    Hibernian 3 v 0 Kilmarnock

    Hanlon 12
    Cairney 77
    Stevenson 92

A minutes silence was held before kick-off as both teams paid tribute to Hibernian youth player David Paul

Hibernian would win at home for the first time since September and would prove to be too strong for Kilmarnock

Craig Samson in the Kilmarnock goal was in outstanding form as he kept out attempts from Cummings Stevenson and Robertson but he could do little about Paul Hanlon’s header from Cairney’s corner kick

Hibs continued to press forward but despite Robertson hitting the crossbar found Samson to be in outstanding form. Kris Boyd tested Ben Williams in a rare Kilmarnock foray forward

The quality of HIBS’ play was excellent throughout and they sealed the deal when Paul Cairney swept a ball into the bottom corner with a left foot shot after Kilmarnock struggled to clear a cross into the box deep into the second half

Lewis Stevenson who had recently made his 200th appearance for the club crowned a magnificent performance with an excellent stoppage time goal from 25 yards

HIBS Williams Forster McGivern Robertson Nelson Hanlon Cairney Craig Cummings Collins and Stevenson

    Hibernian 1 v 0 Celtic

    Griffiths 9

My memory of this game is how baltic it was at Easter Road that day

Hibs took the lead when Leigh Griffiths latched onto a long Paul Hanlon ball to outstrip the Celtic defence and their keeper Fraser Forster to score from an incredibly tight angle. HIBS were then denied a stonewall penalty when Rogne blatantly handled an Eoin Doyle shot in the box

Both sides had plenty of chances and both keepers made some fine saves in particular Ben Williams who was under extreme pressure from the champions in the closing stages

HIBS Williams Clancy Hanlon McPake Deegan Claros Cairney Stevenson Taiwo Griffiths and Doyle

    Subs Maybury Wotherspoon Handling

    29/12/2010 Scottish League SPL

    Hibernian 2 v 2 Dundee United

    Bamba 44
    Hanlon 89

Sol Bamba scored in his last and 75th appearance for HIBS heading in a Riordan freekick that had been palmed onto the post by the United keeper

Paul Hanlon made United pay for substitute Danny Swanson’s stupid sending off with a late equaliser after David Goodwillie had scored a double in the second and thirty fifth minutes to give United a two goal lead

HIBS Brown Hart Murray Dickoh Hanlon Bamba De Graaf Stevenson Galbraith Wotherspoon and Riordan

    29/12/2001 Scottish League SPL

    Hearts 1 v 1 Hibernian

    O’Neil 90

Hearts attempted to defend McKenna’s tenth minute strike but were undone in the 90th minute when John O’Neil followed up on blocked attempts on goal by De La Cruz and Townsley to fire home through a scrum of bodies past MacKenzie to preserve Franck Sauzee’s unbeaten run against the Hearts as player and Manager

    ‘ You’ll never beat Sauzee ‘

Franck Sauzee gave a debut to 18 year old Derek Riordan in this fixture

    29/12/1973 Scottish League Division One

    Partick Thistle 1 v 0 Hibernian

A disappointing result for HIBS as they lost ground on leaders Celtic

Alan Gordon missed the game with Flu and John Blackley missed a penalty

Bobby Lawrie with a first half goal for the Jags

Hibs McArthur Bremner Schaedler Stanton Black Blackley Edwards O’Rourke Smith Cropley and Duncan

    Subs Hazel for Smith

    Att 6000

    29/12/1956 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 3 v 3 Celtic

    Fraser 25

Thoroughly entertaining Christmas fare at Easter Road Ryan, Smith and Mochan replied for Celtic

You mention the weather at one game was 'Baltic'. I once went a holiday to the Baltic (Travemunde, in Germany), and the weather was so warm that the girls were all in bikinis (and some of the boys anaw, though let's not go there)!

    Hibernian 1 v 1 Kilmarnock

Hibs went on the front foot after Kris Boyd scored in the first minute but despite all their pressure all Hibs had to show for their efforts was a tap in from Olly Shaw after Jamie MacDonald made a hash of a routine save.

In a dour game the halftime introductions of Benji and Kevin Thomson helped turn the game in HIBS’ favour Scott Brown feeding Chris Killen who turned superbly to fire a shot into the bottom left hand corner from the edge of the box to open the scoring

Killen scored his 14th goal of the season from the penalty spot when Sol Bamba needlessly handled a Thomson corner

Someone was going to ‘catch it’ and Aberdeen almost did here and the 3-2 scoreline definitely flattered them

Aberdeen’s new midfield wonderkid Zoltan Varga was totally eclipsed by HIBS’ own midfield maestro Alex Edwards

Pat Stanton and Jimmy O’Rourke were on the scoresheet but HIBS’ third goal was a thing of beauty

A pinpoint Alex Cropley pass sent Arthur Duncan scampering down the left touchline The Flyer fired over a waist high first time cross which was met by the horizontal figure of Alan Gordon. Gordon’s blonde head made perfect contact with the ball which flew past Bobby Clark in the Aberdeen goal

Alan Gordon later said that it was one of the best goals he ever scored The crowd certainly thought so as the team received a prolonged ovation as the players trotted back to the half way line

Was that for a last man foul at the halfway line despite Super Joe (who was no slouch) virtually being in possession of the ball before the attcker had hit the ground?

OK cheers. I had a perfect view of that and couldn't believe my eyes. Similar to when Kevin McAllister was halfed (halved?) in the box in the first minute at Ibrox and the referee chose to ignore it. Or when the referee let Rangers score when Goram (still at Hibs) was lying unconscious and had been for at least a minute.

im not surprised. Could easily have been 10. Hearts keeper pulled off a couple of saves that still amaze me to this day and we missed a couple of other great chances.

What’s often forgotten is that they had a terrific defensive record at Tynecastle.Think they’d only lost 4 goals up until then.
