I was waiting for this one. My auld man had declined to take me through to Hampden the week before and I was totally gutted. He did take me to this game at Easter Road though. 5 goals to the good by half time, a precursor of things to come a few weeks later.

I have memories of the League Cup being displayed, but wonder if this is mixed up with another game where it went round on top of a lawnmower with a table attached to the front.

Great Gilzean cartoon in the news on the Monday that followed. Talking of which, I would love a compilation of these cartoons. Not sure that they are archived anywhere by the Evening News, but they would make for an awesome trip down memory lane for season 72-73.

I can still picture that day, the smell of cigars in the air, the deluge of goals and the feeling that we were Hibs, the kings of the world.

Defo a lawnmower ‘thing’ with two Colts dressed in HIBS strips proudly holding aloft both cups going round the track at half-time

Followed by a 1-1 at Darkheid

Doings for Aberdeen and Hearts followed by the low of East Fife

    Halcyon days

I've posted this before but it's one of my favourites. From 1/1/73 to the end of the 72/73 season, Hibs scored more goals at Tiny than Hearts! Fantastic!!

I was at the game against Raith when Gordon Smith broke his leg.It was a collision with the goalie made worse by a Raith defender standing on his leg. No stretcher and he was carried around the track by two guys and he had his arms draped over their shoulders. The crowd were singing "Will ye no come back again"-very cheerful and then "A Gordon for me".Eddie Turnbull then wiped out the Raith defender first chance he got-the ref paid no attention. Incidentally,Billy, it was Archie Buchanan that was taken off injured not Jock.

Leeds took the lead after four minutes when following a poor kick out from goalkeeper Willie Wilson Jimmy Greenhoff got to the byline skinning Joe Davis sending over a low cross to Eddie Gray whose initial attempt was blocked by John Madsen on the goalline but he followed up to convert the rebound

Hibs then proceeded to dominate the game and Colin Stein had a good goal mysteriously disallowed The Irish Referee appeared to award the goal but changed his mind after being surrounded by Leeds defenders

Stein then came in for special attention from the Leeds players and was the victim of two horrendous tackles by Billy Bremner on the half hour the second of which left Stein lying in a crumpled heap on the trackside and having to be carried off on a stretcher with a badly damaged ankle Bremner was only spoken to by the Referee

Yeah looks as though Jase scored a tap in when a King Dom shot was parried

Might have been 9 months later ( 24/10/2015) when Jase lobbed the Keeper?

Yeah looks as though Jase scored a tap in when a King Dom shot was parried

Might have been 9 months later ( 24/10/2015) when Jase lobbed the Keeper?

    Might be wrong?
    Might be.

It was acceptable in the eighties

Perhaps, but that was 1976, under Eddie Turnbull.

    22/12/2018 Scottish League Premiership

    Hibernian 1 v 1 Livingston

    Porteous 80

Hibs playing their third game in six days started with their two main strikers Jamie MacLaren and Florian Kamberi on the bench

Livingston who had swatted away Hearts 5-0 eight days previously were unchanged

After a tight first half in which either team could have taken the lead it was left to Scott Hardie 10 minutes into the second half to score his third goal in four games when he lobbed a Declan Gallagher pass over the advancing Bogdan

Hibs had an immediate chance to restore parity when Martin Boyle was hauled down inside the box but Florian Kamberi was unconvincing, lacking any confidence and Kelly made a routine save from his telegraphed spot kick

It was left to young Ryan Porteous playing through the pain barrier as he appeared to reset his damaged knee on more than one occasion to lead by example to stoop to head home a fine cross by Daryl Horgan to snatch the equaliser

Hibs Bogdan McGregor Ambrose Porteous Milligan Slivka Boyle Hyndman Mackie Shaw and L Allan

    22/12/2007 Scottish League SPL

    Celtic 1 v 1 Hibernian

    Murphy 20

Hibs began life without John Collins with a battling draw at Parkhead

HIBS under the cosh for most of this game broke free from their shackles on 20 minutes when David Murphy charged forward exchanged a pass with Benji on the edge of the Celtic box before unleashing a fierce drive that entered the Celtic net via the underside of the crossbar at a rate of knots

Celtic with no fewer than five former Hibees in their ranks Caldwell, Brown, Hartley, Riordan and Killen continued to press forward but HIBS held out for almost an hour until Jarosik scored from a corner

HIBS were reduced to ten men for the last 10 minutes when Benji limped off HIBS having used all of their subs

Vennegoor Of Hesselink hit the base of the post in the last minute with a header

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Rangers

Hibs were bottom of the table looking certainties for relegation but they still had one ace up their sleeve George Best

On a frozen rock hard pitch Best put on a masterclass performance orchestrating the midfield Rangers had no answer to him He was quite literally dancing on ice One crude attempt to dispossess him by Derek Johnstone with a challenge from behind ended with Best picking up the ball and asking the prostrate Johnstone “ Is this what you are after?”

Tommy McLean gave Rangers the lead direct from a free kick Tony Higgins equalised in the second half when Ally Macleod burst through and Higgins unleashed an exocet low into the goalkeeper’s bottom right hand corner Colin Campbell got some small recompense for the Scottish Cup Final when the goalkeeper appeared to have his looping header covered but he landed awkwardly resulting in the ball hitting off his back and drifting over the line

    22/12/1973 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 5 v 0 Morton

    O’Rourke 3
    Gordon 2

With mist and rain over Easter Road the fans were invited to take cover under the covered enclosures free of charge

HIBS scored the first in 17 minutes when Cropley floated over a corner Stanton headed on and O’Rourke crashed the ball high into the net from 5 yards giving Baines no chance

In 24 minutes HIBS increased their lead O’’Rourke clipped a ball over his shoulder to the onrushing Duncan who hit the byline and sent over the perfect cross for Gordon to glance into the inside of the net

Into the second half and after 54 minutes Edwards sent O’Rourke clean through on goal he struck his shot firmly enough but the ball got stuck on the sawdust and agonisingly rolled over the line after what seemed an eternity

    O’Rourke completed his hat-trick in 77 minutes

Gordon added a fifth in 82 minutes

    Liverpool 2 v 0 Hibernian (Agg 3-0)

Hibs hit the post twice through Johnny Graham and Joe McBride but it was not to be goals by Heighway and Boersma gave Liverpool a comfortable win

Hibs gave a better account of themselves than in the first leg and entertained the appreciative home fans but it was felt that Baines might have done better for the decisive second goal and was deceived by the flight of the ball

It was to be Joe McBride’s last game for the greens

    22/12/1883 Scottish Cup Round 6

    Hibernian 6 v 1 Battlefield

This game brings us to the strange case of Jim Brogan

Brogan was one of the scorers in this match but this was to be his last game for the club

Brogan was a real asset to the club a prolific scorer who had scored six goals on his debut

The problem was that even although he was a Catholic he wasn’t practicing and refused to attend mass or join in any religious marches

After 3 months he left to join our arch rivals Hearts who were only too pleased to sign him but after only a few months there he was tempted by the professional game down south and joined Bolton Wanderers where he became a regular goalscorer

He was a good player and Catholic but he wasn’t Catholic enough for HIBS at that time

Brogan left Bolton in 1892 and worked in the shipyards until he was 85

What a strike that was from Murphy in the 2007 game at Celtic Park. Still my favourite left back from my 30 odd years of watching Hibs.

Would agree with you David Murphy would be left back in my all time favourite Hibs team. However Murph just edges out John Park. One of the classist players who ever played for Hibs.

    24/12/2016 Scottish League Championship

    Hibernian 1 v 1 Raith Rovers

    Boyle 88

Gary Locke brought his Raith Rovers team containing ex Jambos Jason Thomson and pantomime villain Rudi Skacel to Easter Road and filled his sack with a point knocking HIBS off their perch at the top of the League

HIBS dominated the first half with Kevin Cuthbert making magnificent saves from Shinnie Commons and Cummings

Into the second half and Jean-Yves M’Voto got his head to a Johnston cross to nod past Ross Laidlaw for the opener

Raith Rovers grew in confidence and Jason Thomson clipped a 25 yarder off Laidlaw’s crossbar

With the clock ticking down Neil Lennon replaced Commons and Cummings with Boyle and Keatings and the move paid off two minutes from the end when Boyle scampered off down the left wing before cutting inside to fire a right footed shot beyond Cuthbert

Motherwell drew level three minutes into the second half when goalkeeper McDonald blocked a goal bound effort from exhibee hero Jimmy O’Rourke and another ex hibee Willie Pettigrew following up gratefully slotted home the rebound

    Game on

Bobby Hutchinson went off injured to be replaced by derby hero Willie Paterson who scored his second and final goal for the club sending an unstoppable drive to Stewart Rennie’s left for the winner
