I was at the game against Raith when Gordon Smith broke his leg.It was a collision with the goalie made worse by a Raith defender standing on his leg. No stretcher and he was carried around the track by two guys and he had his arms draped over their shoulders. The crowd were singing "Will ye no come back again"-very cheerful and then "A Gordon for me".Eddie Turnbull then wiped out the Raith defender first chance he got-the ref paid no attention. Incidentally,Billy, it was Archie Buchanan that was taken off injured not Jock.

Hibs then proceeded to dominate the game and Colin Stein had a good goal mysteriously disallowed The Irish Referee appeared to award the goal but changed his mind after being surrounded by Leeds defenders
Stein then came in for special attention from the Leeds players and was the victim of two horrendous tackles by Billy Bremner on the half hour the second of which left Stein lying in a crumpled heap on the trackside and having to be carried off on a stretcher with a badly damaged ankle Bremner was only spoken to by the Referee

Hibs had an immediate chance to restore parity when Martin Boyle was hauled down inside the box but Florian Kamberi was unconvincing, lacking any confidence and Kelly made a routine save from his telegraphed spot kick

The problem was that even although he was a Catholic he wasn’t practicing and refused to attend mass or join in any religious marches
After 3 months he left to join our arch rivals Hearts who were only too pleased to sign him but after only a few months there he was tempted by the professional game down south and joined Bolton Wanderers where he became a regular goalscorer
He was a good player and Catholic but he wasn’t Catholic enough for HIBS at that time
Brogan left Bolton in 1892 and worked in the shipyards until he was 85

24/12/2016 Scottish League Championship
Hibernian 1 v 1 Raith Rovers
Boyle 88
Gary Locke brought his Raith Rovers team containing ex Jambos Jason Thomson and pantomime villain Rudi Skacel to Easter Road and filled his sack with a point knocking HIBS off their perch at the top of the League
HIBS dominated the first half with Kevin Cuthbert making magnificent saves from Shinnie Commons and Cummings
Into the second half and Jean-Yves M’Voto got his head to a Johnston cross to nod past Ross Laidlaw for the opener
Raith Rovers grew in confidence and Jason Thomson clipped a 25 yarder off Laidlaw’s crossbar
With the clock ticking down Neil Lennon replaced Commons and Cummings with Boyle and Keatings and the move paid off two minutes from the end when Boyle scampered off down the left wing before cutting inside to fire a right footed shot beyond Cuthbert

24/12/1977 Scottish League Premier Division
Hibernian 2 v 1 Motherwell
MacLeod pen
Paterson
Both teams were in the bottom four and were determined to lift themselves clear of the pack so a festive attacking cracker was on the menu
HIBS took a half time lead when Ally Macleod coolly slotted home a penalty in 45 minutes
Motherwell drew level three minutes into the second half when goalkeeper McDonald blocked a goal bound effort from exhibee hero Jimmy O’Rourke and another ex hibee Willie Pettigrew following up gratefully slotted home the rebound
Game on
Bobby Hutchinson went off injured to be replaced by derby hero Willie Paterson who scored his second and final goal for the club sending an unstoppable drive to Stewart Rennie’s left for the winner
The victory took HIBS up to mid table beside a strangely struggling Celtic

Hibs record only their second League win of the season
24/12/1966 Scottish League Division One
Hibernian 2 v 5 St Johnstone
Stevenson 8
O’Rourke 86
Heavy snow lay on the pitch and was cleared prematch to reveal an ice rink of a pitch that suited the smaller and more nimble St Johnstone players leading to a shock defeat
No excuses it was the same for both sides and HIBS were roundly booed off the pitch by the 5688 Christmas shoppers that bothered to turn up
24/12/1960 Scottish League Division One
Hibernian 8 v 4 Third Lanark
J Baker 5
Baxter 2
J Scott
A proverbial Christmas cracker with Goodfellow 2, Hilley and and Gray replying for Thirds
Thirds were no pushovers illustrated by the fact that Ronnie Simpson saved two penalties
John Baxter received six stitches to a head wound and insisted on seeing out the game

Hibernian 2 v 3 Celtic
Combe 44
Turnbull 80
With HIBS having just scored and swarming downhill buzzing around the Celtic penalty box looking for an equaliser the Referee Mr Youngson of Aberdeen blew the final whistle with 86 minutes on the clock
An early Christmas present for Celtic
24/12/1949 Scottish League Division One
Hibernian 4 v 2 Raith Rovers
Reilly 2

24/12/1898 Scottish League Division One
Rangers 10 v 0 Hibernian
Black Christmas
This was and still is HIBS’ worst ever defeat
HIBS were third in the league and played a strong side but Rangers were too good on the day on a game played on a heavy muddy pitch
Things might have been worse Rangers actually missed a penalty but as was to become a tradition the Referee simply awarded them another which they duly converted
At Easter Road They Play John Campbell
