He was a good professional whom played through some really dark times at ER, didnae deserve the pelters he got. It was enough to make you wince, the Cyclops stuff and much, much worse. Hibernian 1 v 0 Djurgardens (Agg 4-1)
Turnbull pen 70
Onwards march the HIBS
A penalty goal by Eddie Turnbull twenty minutes from the end ended all doubts about HIBS’ entry into the semifinals of the European Champions Cup.
Willie Ormond was on his way up through the middle when he was unceremoniously brought down by Edlund and Ollson
Hibs should have won this game more convincingly but brilliant goalkeeping by Arvidsson kept them out pulling off fantastic saves from a Turnbull header at the base of the post, Mulkerrin, Smith and Bobby Combe with a net bound daisy cutter sneaking in at the post that the keeper held at full stretch.
Gordon Smith thumped the Swedish post when he anticipated a Combe back heeler Arvidsson then tipped a brilliant net bound Mulkerrin header over the crossbar
Just before the winning goal Combe through on goal brilliantly lobbed the goalkeeper only to see Edlund head the ball away from underneath the crossbar
Such was the pace and power of HIBS’ display- there was not a failure in their ranks - that many observers fancied them to bring the inaugural trophy back to Scotland

Arthur Duncan was far and away the best player on the park in this fixture and he became the first player to score a hat-trick for HIBS in the Premier League
It was only sloppy defending on HIBS’ part that allowed Saints back into the game with Charlie Smith scoring two and Gordon Smith grabbing the other
Arthur opened the scoring after 2 minutes Smith replied on 3 minutes and then gave Saints the lead on 16 minutes Arthur was then pulled down in the box for John Brownlie to equalise from the penalty spot on 19 minutes The flying winger then added further goals on 21 and 49 minutes

Hibernian 5 v 0 Napoli ( Agg 6-4 )
Duncan 5
Quinn 44
Cormack 66
Stanton 67
Stein 77
Hibs have known European triumphs but never one quite like this
Hibs had to win by three clear goals and concede none to knock the Italian League leaders out of the Fairs Cup.
In five minutes the fuse that lit this explosive tie was lit when fullback Bobby Duncan carried the ball forward into midfield and from 25 yards took everyone by surprise when he unleashed a thundering left foot shot that flashed past Italian international goalkeeper Dino Zoff in the Naples goal high into the net
Peter Cormack was then pulled down inside the box but the Referee only awarded an indirect free kick that was cleared
Pat Stanton then had a header from a Pat Quinn freekick brilliantly saved by Zoff
Alan McGraw then joined in the action with a powerful shot that was deflected past the post before Colin Stein had a shot cleared off the line by Bianchi
Naples were turning physical and in fairness to the Referee this did not go unnoticed as they continued to rack up fouls ( 23 in the first half).
With the pressure mounting on the Italian goal HIBS made the breakthrough their play deserved just before half-time. Stein made it by his sheer determination in carrying the ball almost to the Naples by-line and then cutting it across goal Zoff fumbled and Quinn racing in hit a hard low shot into the net off the upright
At half-time Napoli sacrificed an attacker for a defender but it was too little too late as HIBS now had their tails up
In the second half as HIBS kicked down the slope it was attack after attack
In 67 minutes Easter Road went radge Stein won a corner Alex Scott swung it well away from Zoff and Peter Cormack rose in the box jumping at least a foot higher than everyone else to send a header beyond the goalkeeper
Two minutes later the fans were singing “Easy Easy” as Pat Stanton headed home number four at the back post courtesy of another splendid Scott cross
Zoff then dropped on a header from Stein before Girardo was sent off for kicking out at Eric Stevenson when they were both lying on the ground in front of the Stand
In 79 minutes a Napoli clearance was intercepted and Stein was sent through on goal to complete the scoring
