He’s trying to win some of the WATP Tory vote. They’ll not pick up votes from anywhere else.

Edit: Now that’s how you go off-topic but rein it back in!
His response wasn't particularly subtle but perhaps he meant it not to be. All politicians know how to dog whistle and Sturgeon was doing the same thing here, she's extremely good at it. He's a muppet for diving into the obvious response with both feet.

Ben Bradley is just far less subtle and far less accomplished at his version of it. He's not a serious threat, he's a clown who has managed to do almost as much damage to the Tories this week as Marcus Rashford.

Keir Starmer has said Labour will force another vote on this before Xmas. I think there will be a Tory u-turn before that happens.
Out of interest does anyone know how the free school meals system works in England (and Wales and NI) during 'normal' times? In the main it's just for kids in primary 1-3 in Scotland. Does it extend further elsewhere or is it largely the same age group?

Having been into my own kids' primary school on more than one occasion as part of a parents in school day, which included eating lunch with the kids, I'd say the quality of the meals on offer ranges from near inedible (cold, unsalted macaroni!!) to very tasty (good pizzas and sausages).

    Behave yourself.

You make many thought-provoking and valid points relating to the independence debate.

    This isn’t one.

Much as you want it to be true, it just isn’t.

I'd agree with that. I quite often ate next to nothing at primary school as the food was so disgusting.

Hancock was asked this morning if Johnson had replied to Rashford's recent letter - Hancock said there had been "communication" between the two. It's now been confirmed that the last such communication from Johnson to Rashford was in June.

Why not just say "I don't know"?!? It's not as though folk wouldn't accept that, as Health Secretary, he might have other priorities. It's like some of them have an addiction to deceit; having spent so much time lying, they've forgotten how to tell the truth.

Expect Kuenssberg, Peston and the rest will be immediately calling out Hancock as a liar for this, rather than contorting their reports with ridiculous euphemisms.

You're kidding yourself. She is an excellent communicator and she doesn't say anything accidentally. It was actually worded precisely to allow different people to take from it what they wanted. That's what a dog whistle is.

She said this: "This is a virus that obviously travels across borders very easily and I suspect over the summer we did get very close to elimination in Scotland and then, not entirely, but we’ve reseeded it from travel across the UK and internationally so border control I think is an important consideration here"

She could have said this: "This is a virus that obviously travels very easily and I suspect over the summer we did get very close to elimination in Scotland and then, not entirely, but we’ve reseeded it from travel within Scotland, across the UK and internationally so travel control I think is an important consideration here"

If I want to hear the UK bit then that's what I hear. If I want to hear the international bit then I hear that. Her implication with the rUK part is not in this instance anti-English, it is that the RUK (Johnson and his Govt) let us down or we might have beaten it.

So to be clear then you think she is right in what she said? That the virus has spread from across the UK and abroad. But as you are at pains to point out at every given opportunity, Scotland is part of the UK. She is 100% correct, border control, both ways, could have prevented further spread. Unfortunately border control was out with the Scottish government remit.

The only dog whistling I see here is from you. As you pointed out, if you want to hear the rUK bit you will, and that is exactly what you have CHOSEN to do

What you have described in your final paragraph is confirmation bias on the part of the those listening rather than dog-whistling on the part of the person talking.

I took it to imply that in the presence of great players he could stand back and just try to officiate the game. But in their absence perhaps it was incumbent on him to become the star of the show.

Just watched Scottish Questions. Corona really is a wet dream for opposition politics. They can moan about absolutely everything without having to solve anything themselves. One Tory even had the brass neck to criticise the Scottish government's lack of finacial support towards business and the lack of Scottish investment in a vaccine. Where do they find these clowns?

It sounds like they've accidentally got it right with that one:

"Amoy, owned by Heinz, has 58% of the £29m market according to research company Euromonitor International. Its soy sauce is made in China and bottled in the UK so the UK-Japan deal will have no impact. But the tariff payable on soy sauce imported from China will come down slightly from the 7.7% it was as part of the EU to the UK's new rate of 6%."

    Alternative fact:
"the leading brand of soy sauce sold in the UK, Kikkoman, produces its sauce for the British market in the Netherlands. This mean the product could get more expensive in the event of a no-deal Brexit"

Cue Gove all over the media claiming that getting the UK a 1.7% reduction in the price of a weird "foreign" sauce was always the real motivation behind Brexit.

That'll teach those French a lesson, especially if we can afford to buy anything to pour it on.

No way he'll be saying that. He'll be claiming it's (gone down from 7.7 to 6 which is) a 22% reduction in somethingorother.
