Dunfermline returned to the Premier League for the first time since 1975 and a bumper crowd of 11000 welcomed both teams as they came out into the afternoon sunshine the Dunfermline fans giving their heroes a standing ovation
The opening stages were frantic and Dunfermline withstood 20 minutes of HIBS pressure before taking a sensational lead when centre half Dave Young rose in the HIBS box to head home the opener to send their fans wild. Dunfermline might have had a second before half time but it was HIBS who carved out an equaliser through Paul Kane right on the break
That goal gave HIBS confidence going into the second half and the Dunfermline defence struggled to cope with mercurial winger Michael Weir indeed it was Weir who put HIBS 2-1 ahead when he pounced on a Stevie Cowan header that Ian Westwater failed to hold
Dunfermline were far from finished however and within a few minutes were level again when ex hibee Stuart Beedie equalised for the Pars with a deflected free kick.
Hibs’ teenage midfield sensation John Collins once again put HIBS into the lead on 59 minutes following a mazy run and cross from Weir in which he beat four defenders.
It looked for all the world that HIBS would hold on as the clock ticked down as they had a vice-like grip of the midfield but that man Young popped up again in 87 minutes to head home a sensational equaliser and a share of the points for the home team

That St Johnstone LC game was the only game my mum ever took me to if I recall correctly. Lost 1-2 and a certain Ally McCoist scored a 25 yard screamer. I was only 12 and remember being on the huge east terracing with her and McCoist before he became a total dick scoring that goal

Combe lobbed a perfectly weighted ball over the heads of the Thistle defence and there was Reilly racing through to score. Prior to half -time Combe added a second and soon after the break Reilly made it three before Stott pulled one back for the jags but it meant little as Reilly went on to complete his hat-trick and Turnbull added another from the penalty spot

Ryan Jack was sent off for angrily grabbing Dylan McGeoch and getting involved in a heated exchange with Anthony Stokes right in front of Referee John Beaton. HIBS added to Rangers’ woes when Murray picked out Slivka on the edge of the six yard box the Lithuanian’s attempt on goal appeared to be going past the post before being inadvertently directed into his own goal by Tavernier
Hibs stretched their lead just after the interval when The Rangers defence fell asleep at a throw in allowing Slivka to control the ball on his knee before sending a 20 yard volley beyond Foderingham
Tavernier redeemed himself with nine minutes to go when he pulled a goal back with a header but it was too little too late

Dundee took the lead in this game when Georgi Nemsadze cut the ball back to Fabian Caballero who found himself in acres of space to fire a powerful right footer into the bottom corner. The visitors were living up to their prematch billing and were playing brilliant football but were left stunned when Didier Agathe scored a brilliant solo goal collecting the ball in his own half shrugging off a series of challenges as the Dundee defence struggled to match his searing pace and he dispatched a deft flick beyond Dundee goalkeeper Rab Douglas on seeing the whites of the goalkeeper’s eyes.
Hibs missed a goalden chance to take the lead when Douglas brilliantly saved a Russell Latapy penalty kick after Tom Smith was hauled down inside the box. Latapy made up for this misdemeanour when he played a perfectly weighted ball into Agathe’s path who gave HIBS the lead just before half-time
Dundee’s problems increased in stoppage time at the end of the first half when Cabellero was sent off for elbowing Matty Jack after the HIBS enforcer had rattled his bones like a xylophone with a typically robust challenge
Hibs were always comfortable against ten man Dundee in the second half and increased their lead through a double from substitute Dirk Lehmann and a late counter from fellow substitute Stuart Lovell

This resounding 4-0 victory over Kilmarnock at Easter Road put flamboyant HIBS top of the Scottish Premier League with goals from Stevie Crawford, Barry Lavety, Baker og and Pat McGinlay
Hibs’ fourth goal from Pat McGinlay a speculative long range effort from just inside the Killie half brought some light hearted banter between Pat McGinlay and Chic Charnley as he tried to emulate the latters goal from inside his own half against Alloa a few weeks earlier

Hibernian 4 v 2 Celtic

Hibernian’s first ever Scottish League Division One match was a resounding 7-2 victory away to Third Lanark at Cathkin Park on Saturday 17th August
The following week on Saturday 24th August Hibernian played Champions Celtic in the league at Hibernian Park. All Scotland was talking about the big clash of the Irish rivals ....which had excited so much interest among all followers of the game and was so eagerly looked forward to.
Heavy showers of rain fell as the 10000 crowd assembled at the Holy Ground and when the Celtic team appeared on the field they received a ‘ rather cool reception.’ As if by magic the weather immediately changed when the Edinburgh Irishmen came out. The roar that greeted Barney Breslin’s Hibernian men brought the sunshine out in undimmed splendour and quite dispersed the vapoury veil enshrouding Arthur’s Seat and the Salisbury Crags
Recent defector Allan Martin didn’t get too rough a time from the Hibernian navvies because he truly had an abysmal game for Celtic. Celtic had the best of the first half scoring a goal but Bobby Neill equalised amid great cheering
At half-time Hibernian unfurled their green with harp Second Division Championship flag amid scenes of great emotion among the sons of the Emerald Isle that had to be seen to be believed
An inspired Hibernian took command of the second half and goals from John Kennedy and Paddy Murray gave them a comfortable lead with ten minutes left. Celtic were a great team however and battled back with a goal to make a real game of it .
Hibernian roused themselves roared on by their fanatical support. The beleaguered Celtic defence struggled to withstand wave after wave of Hibernian attacks resulting in Alex Howie scoring a fourth goal for Hibernian in the closing stages

Hibernian substitute Jamie MacLaren’s late equaliser in the 86th minute salvaged a point at home to Aberdeen
Hibs had dominated the second half but looked like they would end up empty handed despite constant pressure

Man Of The Match 40 year old Craig Brewster gave Aberdeen a parting gift of two goals as he would leave the Dons to manage Inverness CT.
Hibs took the lead when Steven Fletcher played in Zemmama and the wee man had the presence of mind to dink over the advancing Souter from close range
Craig Brewster then obliged scoring two before the break courtesy of some sloppy HIBS defending. The first when he volleyed home from a tight angle inside Ma-Kalamby’s near side post. The second when Hogg headed a Jackie McNamara delivery high into the air and the hesitant Ma-Kalamby failed to gather it allowing Brewster to tap-in to an empty net from six yards
HIBS increased the pressure second half but another shocking error from Ma-Kalamby handed the visitors another goal. Barry Nicholson flighted in a harmless looking cross Ma-Kalamby came and missed the ball completely allowing Jamie Smith a gratefully accepted tap-in
Ma-Kalamby then nervously flapped at a cross allowing hat-trick seeking Brewster to canon a header off the crossbar The game was raging from end to end and with 20 minutes remaining Steven Fletcher reduced the deficit with a wonderful scissors kick following good work from substitute Dean Shiels
Shiels was then played in by Fletcher in the Aberdeen box and he rounded the Aberdeen goalkeeper for a tap in to draw HIBS level
Hibs were screaming for a penalty in the final minute when Lee Miller looked guilty of pulling the jersey of Rob Jones in a congested penalty box

Hibs went into this final group game level on points with Eddie Turnbull’s Aberdeen after failing to beat St Johnstone at Easter Road. Pat Stanton had a penalty brilliantly saved by St Johnstone goalkeeper Donaldson and a last minute goal by Johnny Graham salvaged a point in a 1-1 draw. Aberdeen went into the tie with a better goal difference after their 7-3 demolition of Airdrieonians a game in which future hibee Joe Harper scored four goals
It was do or die for HIBS at Easter Road and whatever Manager Willie MacFarlane said to his team in the Dressing Room pre-match that Wednesday evening worked a treat as HIBS blew Aberdeen away with a scintillating first half performance scoring four goals past Bobby Clark through Pat Stanton, Johnny Graham, Joe McBride and Arthur Duncan. Special mention to Eric Stevenson playing on the right wing to accommodate Arthur Duncan had a tremendous game giving Aberdeen left back George Murray a torrid time in what he described in his book ‘ Hibs Through and Through’ as the best 45 minutes of his entire career
Aberdeen came out the traps flying second half but Pat Stanton and Jim Black were outstanding at the back and repulsed everything Aberdeen could throw at them. HIBS held on for a famous victory and qualified to face Rangers in a two legged quarter-final

This game worth mentioning as the game that never was
The game started off in brilliant sunshine. HIBS were cruising thanks to a double either side of half-time by Lawrie Reilly. Half way through the second half the area was hit by a cloud burst and a downpour so severe that it rendered the playing surface unplayable and waterlogged. The match was abandoned with 23 minutes to go. Both sides agreed that the correct decision was taken by the Referee. The match is unusual in that it was never replayed as HIBS had won the section in any case

Tony Mowbray left Derek Riordan out of the HIBS squad after he turned down a move to Cardiff City
This left the small band of HIBS supporters apprehensive as HIBS lined up against big spending Rangers with Garry O’Connor playing upfront as a lone striker
Hibernian weathered the storm in the first half with Rangers squandering many decent chances to take the lead. After 63 minutes Mowbray decided to replace O’Connor with Rangers supporting winger Ivan Sproule. This change brought an angry response from O’Connor who asked his Manager what impact Sproule was going to make?
The substitute quickly justified his Managers decision after only 4 minutes when he raced past Fanfan latching on to a long through ball from David Murphy and lobbed the ball over the approaching Waterreus into the unguarded net
Rangers pressed forward and suffered when Scott Brown brilliantly caught them on the counterattack with a burst of speed that took him deep into the Rangers half finding Sproule who finished superbly
Sproule added a third in injury time with a fine individual solo effort holding off Ricksen to give HIBS their first win at Ibrox in 10 years much to the delight of the small band of HIBS supporters seated in the corner

Hunter
Hibs finally broke a 22 game winless run to send their fans wild with delight when Gordon Hunter latched on to a second half ball played to the far post flicked on by Dave Beaumont to fire an unstoppable drive high into the Hearts net
Hunter became the first HIBS player to score the winning goal against Hearts since Eddie May on 4th January 1989
When interviewed after the match he revealed that after he had scored he asked Referee Les Mottram how long there was to go and could not believe it when he said “15 minutes “
Brian Hamilton was denied a killer second after a brilliant save from Hearts stopper Walker
The HIBS fans knew the points were in the bag when ‘Medals Mackay’ was dismissed for pushing Hamilton onto the track near the dugout as they fought to recover a loose ball

The ultimate "couldn't make it up" story. Games against Liverpool, Rangers and Montrose, resulting in one win, one draw and a loss.
And you thought Hibs-ing it was a modern phenomenon.

Kilmarnock 2 v 3 Hibernian

A real old fashioned rip-roaring Cup tie in which the team that would not die became the team that would not die
Calum Campbell gave Killie the lead with a header from a corner after Tommy McIntyre had cleared a Bobby Williamson net bound effort off the line. Williamson almost increased Killie’s lead with a spectacular overhead kick but the danger was cleared. On 36 minutes a half cleared Willie Miller cross fell at the feet of Man of the Match Murdo MacLeod and he wasted no time in dispatching the ball into the Killie net
Both teams went for it second half as neither team wanted extra-time. HIBS were egged on by a large noisy and vociferous away support. On 60 minutes Keith Wright went on a superb solo run beating three players and then cracking a shot past Bobby Geddes that came back off the upright. Luckily Pat Goals McGinlay had matched Wright’s run and was on hand to prod the rebound home.
Kilmarnock’s heads did not go down however - nine minutes later they won a free kick 30 yards out and Ian Porteous rolled the ball to a young Sean McSkimming who blasted a screamer past the helpless John Burridge
There was 20 minutes left and all to play for but Kilmarnock’s joy was short lived as just one minute later a deft flick from Michael Weir in midfield sent Keith Wright once again through one on one on Geddes and this time there was no mistake 3-2 HIBS .
With 11 minutes to go HIBS were reduced to ten men when full back Willie Miller was red carded for elbowing Ally Mitchell in the face
HIBS reverted to one upfront for the remaining minutes and an exhausted Kilmarnock who had played only 48 hours earlier were unable to capitalise on their one man advantage and were restricted to a couple of half chances

Hibs were ripping it up in the League Cup with John Blackley’s Hibs side playing fast entertaining exciting attractive football

That Killie game in 91 brings back great memories. I had a broken ankle at the time so was off work and as it was midweek most of the Alloa Hibs boys had decided to give it a miss. During the day I got in touch with a few of them and said I'd borrow my brother's car. So I borrowed his car, not sure if I actually told him, and piled in four of the boys and drove to Kilmarnock with my leg in a stookie. Got to the game late as by the time I hobbled on my crutches from the car to the match we were a goal down before we got in. Happy days on the way to a cup win, was at every game that year as a couple of the boys worked at Alloa brewery who were the sponsors and we got free tickets for every game up to the final
