I'm glad you left the good news to last 😁
I think Dr Fauci said something similar last week too; nice to hear optimism on that front.

I used to have a link which showed the locality of the new cases, I can't find it. Does anyone know where this info is now shown?

I'm not 100% certain on my data and I've really just had to guess the data on England based on the other three nations' figures as most sources just report on overall data for the UK and don't specifically mention England.

Northern Ireland - 188 cases and 5 deaths
    Scotland - 376 cases and 6 deaths
    Wales - 1515 cases and 50 deaths
    England - 18620 cases and 2402 deaths

Russia reported to be starting a mass vaccination programme in October! Just hope it proves safe and successful, especially with the news that the US seem increasingly confident of having a vaccine this side of Christmas, and promising results in trials over here too.

    I'll remain cautiously optimistic...

Those numbers make an absolute mockery of the tubes who are leaping on the stats watchdog letter to Scottish government.

I'll need to revise my data, I've just seen that half way through July, Wales added previous positive cases counted through their UK Government testing centres, their figure rose by 863 but only 21 of them were newly reported cases so their total should be 673.

It probably causes a drop in England's cases total by 842.

Northern Ireland and Scotland's figures seem ok as they began including UK centre testing figures in June.

Bad news from Melbourne where they have just announced their current lockdown is going to be extended by six weeks and restrictions tightened further. The whole state of Victoria is classified as being in a state of disaster. Looks like they just can’t get a grip on things there at all.

That is bad news indeed - and an interesting glimpse into the future for us perhaps given it is winter in Victoria just now. Average daily temperature in Melbourne about 10C lower than Edinburgh at the moment. Sure, that’s not exactly freezing, but it would probably be enough to keep people socialising indoors...

Particularly when it's considered that the optimal temperature for Covid-19 to thrive is around 4°C.

The daily mean temperature in Edinburgh for December, January and February is just over 4°C.

The one positive I can put forward is the drops in the estimated infected people figures at the last 3 3 weekly updates. It dropped from approx. 1200 to 700 to 300. If we have a warm August and people stick with things like wearing masks then, even allowing for the gatherings outside, we could reach a point at which commnuntiy cases are in double rather than triple figures.

If the test and trace strategy continues to prove effective then we, in theory at least, should be able to manage any outbreaks without having to completely shut everything down again. The (welcome) shift in policy regarding schools suggests the government are fairly confident this can be done.

I think August is absolutely key. If we can get through the month with schools fully open and no huge rise in the new case numbers, then we might be able to head towards the end of the year when it looks likely a vaccine will be available without many more restrictions put back in place.

    Fingers/toes etc. crossed.

Thanks for digging this out. I'd have thought Wales would have been doing better than they are, given that they are showing caution in coming out of lockdown.

Northern Ireland and Scotland, steady as she goes.

England need to go back to the drawing board and get their messaging sorted.

    Here's hoping.

The one bit of caution I would add is that up until 30th June, Victoria only had 2159 confirmed cases. Today's figures show there's been more than 9000 cases since then, a rise of over 430% in just over a month.

Everyone restricted to their house after 8pm, until September according to a report I just read.

Stage 4 lockdown until September 13th

From what I've seen over the last couple of weeks, people seem to be relaxing the rules in pubs just now.

Yeah see my more recent post, I've had to revise the figure for Wales as they added historical cases from the UK Government test centres half way through July, their monthly rise was much less although I believe their monthly deaths are correct.

I’ve been in a couple of pubs now and they are pretty busy. It’s annoying because kids still are not allowed to play football. There appears to be no consistency on what opens.

Yes games. And training is only going ahead in groups of 10, and only once a week for 45 mins. It’s not ideal. It’s especially frustrating when you see all the things which are allowed.
