That's the most advanced tactic Hearts have used against us in 30 years of me watching derbys. Did it against Rangers twice and beat them too. They were excellent (boke). When it works it works very well but it rarely works and that's why Stendel got them relegated.

Works well against teams who want the ball and want to come at you. Was excellent for them (and well executed) against us.

But for teams who sit back behind the ball and want you to come at them (i.e.: a relegation scrap) it was worse than useless. Neither the team nor the tactics, as the results showed, were suitable for that kind of battle. I believe Covid saved Hearts from a bigger sporting humiliation (though it couldn't match their self-inflicted social one) and that had the last 8 games been played, their deficit would have been far greater than four points.

I think that if Stendel had replaced Nielson or even Cathro then he'd have been mid table, another huge issue for them was they didn't have the players required to play that high energy, high press style of play. Naismith, Berra, Ikpeazu, Berra, Soutar etc - none of them have the athleticism or ability to do that.

Pre Levein they were still hoofball merchants but at least had a few players who were decent and not permanent injury concerns.
