’ Slim ‘Jim Baxter was shown live on US TV.

Neil Martin gave Sunderland an early lead, Eric Stevenson equalised before Pat Quinn -scoring his first goal in 20 months gave HIBS the lead. Jim Scott later added a third for HIBS and George Mulhall pulled one back for Sunderland to keep the TV audience on the edge of their seats. Eric Stevenson scored the winner for HIBS 15 minutes from the end to seal the deal

This match was hailed as the best of the tournament so far

Hibs opened the scoring after only two minutes through the dependable Arthur Milne. Mills equalised for Clyde on the half hour and Wallace put Clyde ahead just after half time HIBS pressed throughout the whole of the second half but they just could not find an equaliser

Vancouver went further ahead in the second half when Mulhall scored a scorcher from 25 yards. Two minutes later HIBS pulled a goal back through Colin Stein following a melee in the Vancouver penalty box. Joe Davis grabbed a deserved equaliser from the penalty spot on 88 minutes

Colin Todd was sent off 8 minutes from the end after disputing a free kick awarded against Sunderland

There were rumours after this match of possible Rangers interest in Sunderland centre forward ex hibee Neil Martin but nothing came of it

Jim Baxter would return to Ibrox

26/6/1943 Summer Cup Semi-Final

Hibernian 1 v 3 Rangers

The two teams that had faced each other in the two previous finals- HIBS having won the first and losing the second on the toss of a coin- met at Hampden Park in front of 40000 in this semi-final

HIBS took the lead when Bobby Baxter scored direct from a free-kick on 15 minutes after Gordon Smith had been pulled down outside the Rangers box. It was end to end after that until Duncanson equalised for Rangers on 24 minutes. Little then gave Rangers the lead shortly before half-time. HIBS pressed for an equaliser throughout the second half but were caught on the counter- attack with 6 minutes to go when Johnstone made it 1-3 for Rangers

Rangers would go on to lose the final 0-1 to St Mirren - Alec Linwood scoring for The Saints

Worth noting a young Gordon Smith scored 33 goals in this season and Hugh Howie who had joined the club only playing 6 games up to this point went on to be a great servant

53 years ago today, 26th June 1967, Third Lanark closed the doors for the final time with debts of around £40000 - 6m in today’s money

A once proud club formed in 1872 winners of the Scottish Cup in 1889 and 1905 as well as League winners in 1904

No proper accounts were kept and the bills just piled up with no money to pay for them the buck stopped at majority share holder Bill Hiddleston

There was no administration back then it was an instant and brutal ending with the players’ contracts being taken over by the League that saw other clubs come in and taking them on

Certainly a warning from the past

I think it was the season after Joe scored 42. Thirds scored 100 league goals that season & their last 6 came against us at Cathkin! I think they finished third, appropriately in the league. 6 years later & they're gone!

There was a really good documentary about them that I watched a wee while ago. Might have been on Alba. Hiddleston had a real grudge against the club, even though he was a fan, due to a boardroom dispute years before. Also a total crook and he deliberately drove them out if business. Shame really and shows what can happen when clubs have total bombscares in charge. Hearts have had a few in the last 40 years but they just keep clinging on sadly

A silver salver was up for grabs for Man of the Match and even in the 90 degree heat Willie Hamilton was irresistible As well as scoring 7 goals he mesmerised the opposition with his ball skills and bursts of pace. After being presented with the Man of the Match award Willie couldn’t get the prize into his hold-all. Undeterred he bent the tray over his knee to ensure his beloved mum would get her present from Canada

Wales pulled one back for Motherwell on 22 minutes but Caskie 50 and Milne 57 added two in the second-half to put HIBS into the final against Rangers -once again -in defence of their trophy

Willie McCartney had signed guest player Matt Busby who was now a tough Army Sergeant based just outside Edinburgh. Matt Busby was a Scotland international and he had won the League with Manchester City in 1937 and had appeared in two FA Cup finals

Hibs were trailing 1-2 at half-time the HIBS goal coming from Willie Finnigan but eight minutes into the second half Clyde went further ahead when they were awarded a penalty and all looked lost for the Edinburgh Irishmen

Shrewd tactician Willie McCartney thought otherwise and the dapper bowler hatted boss surprised everyone by leaving his seat in the stand and shouting instructions from the track side for Gordon Smith and Arthur Milne to switch positions and less than ten minutes later the whole picture changed with a goal from Gordon Smith and two more from Willie Finnigan to complete his hat-trick.

The press at the time commented ‘Matt Busby was Hibernian’s star man’ Matt was to go on and give ‘McCartney’s Babes’ great service and his influential half back play made Willie Finnigan and Gordon Smith look good. Willie, Gordon and Matt went on to combine beautifully together forming an uncanny understanding not even looking up to see where the other would be before passing the ball to one another

After the war Matt Busby would go on to manage Manchester United and Gordon Smith insisted that Manchester United provide the opposition for his Testimonial - a game in which HIBS would take seven goals off a very strong Manchester United side

In his foreword to the book ‘100 Years of HIBS ‘ Sir Matt Busby stated that he enjoyed his time at HIBS so much that the HIBS result was always the first score he looked for on a Saturday

Hibs would go on to defeat Clyde in the play-off at Ibrox after going behind to an early goal and would win the Summer Cup in this year defeating Rangers in the final at Hampden Park.

29/6/2013 Pre-Season Challenge Match

A large travelling support followed HIBS through to the Bet Butler Stadium to watch a strong HIBS side take on former Hibby Ian Murray’s Dumbarton side less than one month after Hibs’ previous game in the Scottish Cup Final.

The Hibs side was bolstered by additional signings Liam Craig and Owain Tudur-Jones and they took the lead through a well worked goal from Alex Harris 50 only to be pegged back a few minutes later when Ally McKerracher 52 equalised for the home side

Little did anyone in the large travelling support realise that HIBS would be back at the same Stadium in just over a years’ time on League business



29/6/1967 North American League Match Day 9

The Houston Stars 1 v 1 Toronto City

Hibs lined up against Brazilian side Bangu Atletico Club from Rio de Janeiro in the world famous Houston Astrodome.

Tiredness and fatigue was starting to set in caused by the amount of travelling due to the large distances between Stadiums and the players were starting to get homesick

Peter Cormack would score for HIBS in this game and Jim Scott would get himself sent off

The war years were coming to an end but HIBS let themselves down badly against a gutsy Partick Thistle side who were inspired by guest player Bill Shankly in a terrible shocker of a game at Hampden Park

The press at the time reporting “ Never in the history of football conflict has so little been accomplished by so many “

HIBS were without the influential Sammy Kean and this hampered the misfiring forward line who were unable to find a way through the Partick Thistle rearguard despite striking the post twice

Johnson put Partick Thistle ahead halfway through the first half and added his and Partick Thistle’s second five minutes from the end to ensure that no team won the Summer Cup twice during the war years

Cleveland Stokers 2 v 0 Toronto City

Hibs travelled to the Municipal Stadium Cleveland Ohio to face English First Division side Stoke City who featured new signing England World Cup winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks

Hibs had a serious chance of qualifying from their group but concerns were raised by the players that they had had enough of the travelling and just wanted to get back home to enjoy what was left of the close season

They need not have worried as missing Peter Cormack ( ankle) and Pat Stanton ( blistered feet ) they went down to two second half goals in three minutes from Dobing and Burrows

Hibs could still qualify however for the knockout stage all they needed was maximum points from their two remaining games against Irish teams Glentoran and Shamrock Rovers

2/7/2006 Intertoto Cup Round 2

Hibs made light of defensive opponents and torrential summer rain to open up a five goal advantage in this Intertoto Cup tie played in terrible conditions

Chris Killen bundled the ball home from close range on 37 minutes after Paul Dalglish had missed two gilt edged opportunities earlier in the match to open the scoring.

Scott Brown thought he had increased HIBS’ lead 60 seconds into the restart but he was flagged offside. He was not to be denied however when he sprinted through 4 minutes later to round the keeper and tap the ball home. Rob Jones making his debut went close with a couple of headers and Steven Fletcher failed to beat the goalkeeper when left with a one on one.

Hibs were starting to look tired being just 10 days into their preseason and Ivan Sproule eased the pressure when he fired a loose ball under the Dinaburg goalkeeper from close range and he provided a fourth for David Murphy with a perfect cross who had time to pick his spot and blast home with a powerful strike

Fletcher missed another one on one with the goalkeeper before making amends with a glorious strike with a late free-kick 20 yards out

Substitute Amadou Konte missed two glorious chances towards the end of the match to add to HIBS’ tally on the day

2/7/1941 Summer Cup Round Two Play Off

HIBS and Clyde had drawn a tough hard fought two legged second round encounter 5-5 and this winner takes all replay took place at neutral Ibrox Park

After only 3 minutes HIBS were a goal down when Fitzsimmons gave Clyde the lead.

After 30 minutes HIBS equalised. Busby brilliantly eluded three defenders and when everybody thought he was going to shoot he slipped the ball to Arthur Milne whose effort was blocked the rebound falling to Willie Anderson who drove the ball into the net

At half-time Willie McCartney again switched his forwards moving Gordon Smith to the left wing and Arthur Milne to the right and it worked a treat when with after only 4 minutes into the second half Milne crossed accurately to Gordon Smith who wasted no time in crashing the ball behind the Clyde goalkeeper with an unsaveable drive to score what proved to be the winner

A press report at the time stated “ HIBS’ transformation was thanks mainly to the brilliant play of Matt Busby. No praise is too great to be lavished on Busby for his efforts in getting Hibernians so far in the Summer Cup competition “

3/7/2004 Intertoto Cup 2nd Round 1st Leg

Tony Mowbray’s first game in charge survived a 2pm pitch inspection as the Leith area was hit by a deluge of unseasonal torrential rain.

HIBS who had only just returned to pre-season training had six players out through injury whereas Vetra were 10 games into their season and had fought their way through the first round of the competition

Vetra looked the more likely in the first half as they had the better chances striker Karvelis Vytautas squandering a couple of opportunities and midfielder Sernas Darvydas sliding a ball past the post when put clean through by Vytautas

Scott Brown should have done better when the ball dropped kindly at his feet in the box on 27 minutes -courtesy of a good run and cross from O’Connor - but he shot straight at the goalkeeper

Hibs took control after the break only for Sasnauskas to put Vetra into the lead against the run of play following a stramash in the box from a Vetra corner.

Steven Whittaker fired wide from 12 yards as HIBS chased the equaliser. It eventually came with 13 minutes remaining when Scott Brown played a Stephen Glass corner back across the box for Garry O’Connor to round off an excellent personal performance to grab a goal that gave HIBS hope going into the second leg

Interviewed after the game Garry O’Connor made the observation that there was no part of the pitch that was playable

4/7/1942 Summer Cup Final

Hibernian 0 v 0 Rangers * ( Agg: 2-2 corners)

Hibernian walked out at Hampden Park to the loudest cheers from the 60000 crowd. It was obvious however, straight from kick-off that Rangers were not interested in playing football as they turned their attention to the HIBS players. Arthur Milne going off injured in only 4 minutes after suffering a heavy tackle. No substitutes were allowed and he reappeared hobbling on the wing and effectively HIBS were down to 10 men

Although reduced to 10 men Hibernian played all the football and Rangers were fortunate to get to half-time all square as HIBS had two valid penalty claims turned aside by the Referee one a blatant hand ball in the box

The second half began and the same pattern continued with HIBS pressing forward and Rangers hanging on at all costs reduced to roughhouse tactics with Crozier, Kean and Caskie all requiring treatment for nasty injuries

Still HIBS pressed on superbly marshalled by Matt Busby. Rangers reduced to claiming for everything and getting the benefit of some debatable decisions

As the 90 minutes came to an end Davy Shaw hit the Rangers crossbar and both Shaw and Busby required treatment from the HIBS trainer before the final whistle

Into extra-time and corners would now count. Rangers pressed forward and were two corners to the good in the first 15 minutes. Undaunted the 10 man Hibernian side rallied second half and swarmed around the Rangers box pulling back the corner deficit before the final whistle

The match was decided on the toss of a coin.The Rangers captain called correctly and justice was not done that day

It had been a gallant fight by Hibernian. Rangers’ celebrations at winning the toss seemed a bit misplaced after their display of spoiling football marred by too many protests. Rangers’ brutal display had nothing to do with football they were a total disgrace as was a very weak Referee who let them away with murder without one word of censure

The HIBS team that scored a moral victory that day was: Crozier Shaw Hall Busby Baxter Kean Smith Finnigan Milne Combe and Caskie

First up was Shamrock Rovers and part one of the task was easily achieved with goals from Peter Cormack, Colin Stein, Jim Scott and a hat-trick from young Colin Grant coming off the bench

5/7/1941 Summer Cup Semi-Final

The semi-finals of the Summer Cup were between Hearts and Rangers and HIBS and Dumbarton with the Hibees tie being played at neutral Tynecastle

There was no scoring in the first half although Kean Combe and Nutley all had good efforts and Willie Finnigan had hit the post. Matt Busby had been off the field for a lengthy period receiving treatment but Dumbarton could not take advantage of his absence

Arthur Milne who had been guilty of holding onto the ball for too long and getting caught in possession went on a run 10 minutes into the second half beating two defenders before scoring with a neat shot to put HIBS into the final of the Summer Cup

Their opponents in the final at Hampden Park would be the ‘unbeatable Rangers’ who had easily disposed of Hearts in the other semi-final

Hibs must have been doubting the wisdom of entering this competition so early into their season as they were easily brushed aside by a match fit Elfsborg side

Elfsborg were always in control and scored a goal in each half to take a commanding 2-0 lead into the second leg

Elfsborg opened the scoring when Svensson played in Bajrami with a smart ball who wasted no time in slipping a low drive under Ma-Kalambay

The swedes extended their lead in the second half when the HIBS defence were caught napping by a quick corner the ball was played to Augustsson and his deflected shot deceived Ma-Kalambay

Closest for an under-par Hibernian was a Steven Fletcher header which flew over the bar and a drive from the same player from the edge of the penalty box in the second half that was tipped away by the Swedish goalkeeper

Hibs ran out into the searing heat in front of a poor crowd of only 350 - 120 of them Hibernian supporters

Hibs leading 5-0 from the first leg went about their business and took the lead after 20 minutes when goalkeeper Fjodorovs fumbled a loose pass at the feet of Amadou Konte who wasted no time in rolling the ball into the empty net.

Konte added his second in the second half when Ivan Sproule hit the by-line and cut-back the ball into his path and he gratefully drilled it home. Sproule himself added a third following a neat lay off from Paul Dalglish to cap off a fine individual display.

Hibs cruised to a comfortable 6-1 win over Faroese side Runavik thanks to a hat-trick from Florian Kamberi a double from Stevie Mallan and a confidence boosting strike from young Ollie Shaw

The task for the Faroese side became insurmountable in the first half when Trondargjogv Hansen was dismissed for a vicious challenge on Martin Boyle on the half way line

Hibs replaced Ma-Kalambay with Andy McNeil in the HIBS goal after it was felt that the stopper might have done better with a deflected effort in the first leg

Hibs got off to a bright start with an attempt on goal from Steven Fletcher and a run and cross from Alan OBrien but this early in the season HIBS were already looking a tired side and the superior fitness of the home side was beginning to show

Disaster struck for HIBS when a speculative attempt on goal by Floren was defected past a flailing McNeill by Hogg to put HIBS 0-3 behind

Into the second half and the swedes continued to monopolise possession - the best HIBS could muster was an effort from Colin Nish that went wide of the post

The game appeared to be petering out when Bajrami unleashed a 25 yard thunder bolt that flew into McNeill’s top right hand corner

Hibs were written off before a ball was kicked and this was not surprising as they were up against a truly great and formidable Rangers team that had swept everything before them.

Hibs ‘ Captain Bobby Baxter had won the toss and he booked a slight breeze but after only two minutes Rangers were a goal up and another was conceded after 20 minutes to this all-conquering Rangers machine

HIBS were however playing well and Manager Willie McCartney was once again trackside urging Bobby Nutley and Jimmy Caskie to swap wings. Most teams would have thrown in the towel but not HIBS instead they grew in confidence and when Arthur Milne was clean through with the Rangers goal at his mercy he was crudely chopped down from behind and a penalty was awarded which Willie Finnigan without a nerve in his body coolly hit home.

Early in the second half HIBS were denied another stonewall penalty when Milne was once again chopped down from behind but HIBS kept their composure and goalkeeper Jimmy Kerr had to be on his toes.

Rangers were beginning to run out of steam and Matt Busby drove the ball forward out of defence feeding Sammy Kean who slipped it to the onrushing Willie Finnigan and he lashed the ball home for his second and HIBS’ equaliser

Matt Busby’s influence continued to be immense as he urged HIBS forward. With only two minutes of the match remaining Jimmy Caskie took a clever corner to Bobby Nutley who equally cleverly crossed it onto the head of Bobby Baxter who bulleted a header into the back of the Rangers’ net to lift the inaugural Summer Cup for HIBS.

17 year old Gordon Smith was dropped to make way for Everton and Scotland winger Jimmy Caskie one of the major disappointments of his HIBS career

Fraser Murray’s ice cool penalty was enough to give a lackadaisical Hibernian side the bonus point on top of the draw at red hot Forthbank Stadium

Hibs started brightly with Scott Allan forcing keeper Blair Currie into a save that he gathered at the second attempt. Christian Doidge should have done better with a point blank header that brought out a brilliant save from Currie and Joe Newall had a similar attempt that he failed to direct on target

When the breakthrough came it came as the result of a soft award just before half-time when a Stevie Mallan free-kick struck a Bino’s arm in the box. Scott Allan took responsibility and converted the spot kick

Hibs upped the ante second half with Doidge and Horgan both going close before Albion equalised with a glorious strike from Wilson that gave Maxwell no chance

Paul Heckingbottom replaced the ineffective Newall on 72 minutes with Fraser Murray as HIBS chased the winner. Murray almost settled the game in the closing minutes but his drive sailed just over the crossbar. Christian Doidge thought he had secured the points with the last kick of the game as Currie pulled off a miraculous double save from first Tom James and dropping on the follow up attempt from Doidge

It was onto penalties and a 90 minute performance from Paul Heckingbottom’s new signings that left most of the Hibees in the 2000 crowd underwhelmed

14/7/2016 UEFA Europa League Second Qualifying Round Leg 1

Hibs fell behind after only 17 seconds when rookie goalkeeper Otso Virtanen failed to gather a routine save and Kamil Wilczec pounced to put the Danes 1-0 ahead.

Jason Cummings came close to equalising but Frederik Ronnow in the Brondby goal fisted away his 20 yard effort with an unorthodox punch.

The goalkeeper then got his fingertips to a Darren McGregor header and Cummings thought he had scored when he smashed home a Martin Boyle cross only for it to be harshly disallowed for offside by the stand-side linesman. A decision that led to new HIBS Manager Neil Lennon being banished to the Stand

Hibs pressed forward in the second half but were starting to look tired so early into their season

The Danes continued to look dangerous on the counter attack with second half substitute ex Celt Teemu Pukki going closest

HIBS had a late claim for a penalty waved aside by the Spanish Referee when Grant Holt fell theatrically after being tripped inside the box.
