I remember the Hun game very well too, pretty sure it was the final game of the season. I was on crutches as I'd broken my ankle playing rugby and after the game there was no segregation down Albion Rd. Der Hun as was their usual charged along towards the Hibbies leaving that way. I was just at the corner where the advertising board is and it was pretty scary at the time. As there was no chance of running, the crutches were readied as weapons to try to repel any Hun. Thankfully by the time they got anywhere near me the fat hun *******s were out of breath and just gave up the chase. I was only 14 at the time!

Re the Casper game. Not only were many players missing but our team was completely lopsided, I think 7/10 outfield players were left sided. I doubt we've ever had so many in a team before or since. However they all gave everything & ended up one of our best PBS occasions.
PS, I can't believe you haven't given more prominence to the Mali Magician's thunderbolt equaliser at Well.

A goal from Garry O’Connor secured all three points under interim Manager Gerry McCabe in what had been a disappointing season for Hibernian Football Club. HIBS finished in the lower half of the SPL the main highlight of the season being the Scottish League Cup Final which HIBS disappointingly lost to Livingston after knocking out both halves of the Old Firm Goalkeeper Daniel Andersson was the only player to appear in every match and Manager Bobby Williamson was allowed to leave in April 2004 to join Plymouth Argyle Tony Mowbray was waiting in the wings

Hibernian were back they had won the Old First Division by a massive 23 points and a + 51 goal difference

A near capacity crowd saw Alex McLeish and his team officially presented with the First Division trophy after they had beaten runners-up Falkirk

Hibs started off on the front foot but were caught on the hop when they conceded a soft penalty to Falkirk on the break Up stepped old adversary ex-Hearts player Scott Crabbe who was disappointed when HIBS goalkeeper Ollie Gottskalksson dived to his right to tip his effort round the post

Russell Latapy and Franck Sauzee combined to give HIBS the lead when Latapy rolled a free-kick to the big Frenchman who unleashed a trademark 40 yard screamer right into the top postage stamp. Mon Dieu! Paul Hartley doubled HIBS lead in the second half finishing off a fine move. Crabbe did eventually get his goal but his consolation goal for the Bairns didn’t spoil the party The Referee blew the final whistle and there was a good natured pitch invasion Most moving was the joy on the faces of John Hughes and Pat McGinlay who a year earlier had been in tears as HIBS were relegated

Tuesday 8th May was VE Day Victory in Europe Day - the surrender of Germany ended the war in Europe although conflict in the Far East still continued. Bobby Combe had been reported missing by the Army and it was not known if the young man was dead or alive For a couple of months now Bobby had in fact been a prisoner of war in the notorious German Sandbostel camp near Bremen He had recently been rescued and the first thing he did within 24 hours of arriving home was to present himself at the Holy Ground. Willie McCartney immediately included him in the team as captain for the Rosebery Charity Cup Final against Hearts at Easter Road on Wednesday 9th May

Hibernian sealed a European qualification spot thanks to a Colin Nish double against a Dundee United side that had one eye on the Scottish Cup Final Hibernian made one change to the team that lost six goals in midweek to Motherwell in the match that shell-shocked Britain with Sol Bamba returning to the defence in place of Paul Hanlon

Anthony Stokes had the first opportunity of the match following a mistake by Gary Kenneth but shot straight at Pernis Strike partner Colin Nish went one better soon after deflecting the ball under the United goalkeeper following a one-two between Liam Miller and David Wotherspoon

United were taking time to settle into the game but Kenneth almost gave the home support something to cheer when his header from Danny Swanson’s corner was headed off the line by David Wotherspoon Derek Riordan almost doubled HIBS advantage with a shot that deceived Pernis before Stokes once again shot straight at the goalkeeper when put through by Nish

The home side went so close to snatching a leveller just before the break when Damian Casalinuovo got on the end of David Robertson’s freekick but his header flashed just wide

Out of nowhere John Rankin blasted in a snapshot that cannoned off the base of the post with Pernis beaten HIBS kept pushing for the second unaware of Motherwell’s result at Ibrox and Riordan almost got it with a thunderous shot that stung the hands of the outstretched Pernis

With the game seemingly petering out but still 18 minutes to go Colin Nish stooped to head home his second goal of the match after beating Kenneth to the ball from Steven Thicot’s cross

At the full time whistle news filtered through that Motherwell could only manage a draw at Ibrox and HIBS were back in Europe

It was a big Hibs support that day for a team already down. Sunny day, beers before it were going down well and there was a real defiant atmosphere in the pub. We ended up sitting in the very front row of the stand where in 2nd half our subs were warming up. Shaun Dennis was one of them and turned round and shouted at one point to ask what the celtic score was! He was told in no uncertain terms by a fair amount of fans to go **** himself as no one there was interested

A tense nervous game against our arch nemesis Falkirk

After a cagey start both teams had chances to score before Falkirk took the lead. Luke Leahy’s free kick crashed back off the defensive wall falling kindly for Tom Taiwo and the exhibees shot was flicked home by Lee Miller

John McGinn went close at the start of the second half firing over the bar from close range and Anthony Stokes should have done better when put through by Cummings Eventually Hibernian’s perseverance paid off in the 57 th minute when a deep cross from the right was headed back across goal by Stokes and Henderson volleyed home from close range Eight minutes later Hibernian took the lead when Henderson’s corner was bulleted into the net by the head of Darren McGregor

Controversially HIBS should have had a penalty when the grounded David McCracken used an arm to take the ball away from John McGinn inside the penalty area however the match officials missed the infringement That would prove to be a highly significant moment as minutes later a long ball into the HIBS box was struck by Falkirk substitute McHugh on the turn and goalkeeper Logan allowed the ball to squirm under his body and over the line

Kilmarnock assured themselves of top flight football next season by beating Hibernian consigning their opponents to a relegation play-off against Hamilton Academicals

Kris Boyd got the crucial goal for the visitors in a match dominated for long spells by the home side

This was Hibs’ 13 th match without a victory dating back to mid February and there can be little doubt their form over that period is that of relegation fodder

They sat seventh and six points clear of then 11th placed Kilmarnock when Terry Butcher took over in November and apart from a short spell in which the new Manager seemed to have turned things around they have arguably looked an even more dispirited and shambolic outfit than under Pat Fenlon

Toothless upfront their dominance of this match particularly in the early stages was undermined by an incapability in front of goal coupled by some doughty defending by Kilmarnock when necessary

With a touch of good fortune HIBS could have been ahead on two or three occasions with Jordon Forster’s top corner bound drive flicked past the post by the head of Vitalis Maksimenko. From the corner Scott Robertson who had already forced Craig Samson into a decent save glanced a header goalwards only for Barry Nicholson to head off the line

Both sides had plausible penalty claims turned away by referee CRAIG THOMSON one for a shove on Michael Nelson and the other a trip on Boyd before Killie got their noses in front Kris Boyd sweeping in a low Ross Barbour cross just inside Ben Williams ‘ right hand post

Kilmarnock had spells of good possession in the second half but again their goal was the one under greater threat Hibernian captain Liam Craig coming closest with a ferocious drive from 20 yards that hit the underside of the bar and away to safety There were also a couple of almighty stramashes in the box that Kilmarnock somehow survived without conceding but in truth Hibernian’s season long problems in front of goal were their downfall once again

Hibs’ last league match of the season on Saturday 10th May saw them travel to Broomfield playing out a 3-3 draw with Airdrie after the green jerseys had been ahead by three goals. HIBS finished bottom of the league thank god it was only make believe war time football with nothing at stake The main thing was that HIBS had survived the crippling events of the war and the massive contribution the club and supporters had made in the war effort. We had the late Dan McMichael to thank for steering the club through the war years and it was now up to the new Manager Davy Gordon and the Directors to get the club back on a proper footing as many of the now demobbed Hibernian supporters now swelling the Holy Ground did not know if there would be a Hibernian Football Club when they returned from the trenches

This match represented the last chance of domestic success in the 1979/80 season for the traditionally dominant Old Firm as Aberdeen had won the Scottish League Championship and Dundee United had won the League Cup. Rangers went into the match as bookmakers favourites as Celtic were missing Tom McAdam and Roddie MacDonald from their line up

Roy Aitken and Mike Conroy were drafted in as makeshift central defenders but they were effective in nullifying the Rangers attack for the first 90 minutes Celtic scored the winning goal in extra time when George McCluskey deflected a wayward shot by Danny McGrain into the Rangers goal past Peter McCloy

At the full time whistle the Celtic players went to celebrate with their supporters some of the Celtic supporters climbed the perimeter fences and went to celebrate with their players on the pitch - an investigation by the SFA found that this initial invasion was a spontaneous if misguided expression of joy. Some of the Rangers fans had stayed behind despite their teams defeat. One of the Celtic fans grabbed a ball and kicked it into the goal at the Rangers end in response to this some Rangers fans invaded the pitch to charge at the Celtic fans who in turn confronted their rivals. Bricks bottles and cans were soon being thrown along with fans using iron bars and wooden staves from terracing frames as weapons The police had insufficient manpower inside the stadium to quell the disorder Match commentator Archie MacPherson described the riot as like a scene from Apocalypse Now or the Battle of Passchendaele

Both clubs were fined £20000, 200 arrests were made Celtic blamed Strathclyde Police for their handling of the riot The vast majority of Police Officers were outside the ground The police blamed Celtic fans for the disorder a position Rangers agreed with. Celtic cited the underlying hostility between the two sets of fans caused by sectarianism in Glasgow Celtic also stating that their team consisted of both Catholics and Protestants

George Younger ( The Secretary of State for Scotland) blamed alcohol and the actions of the Celtic players for the riot

An act of Parliament was passed that banned the sale of alcoholic beverages within Scottish Sports grounds

Mostly songs about Hertz having had no silverware for a wee while though .... didn’t end well within the week really. A disputed Eamonn Brophy penalty was enough to settle a typically tight meeting between Hibernian and Kilmarnock at Rugby Park. Paul Heckingbottom made two changes to his starting line-up with Hibernian Academy graduate Fraser Murray handed his first start of the season and Flo Kamberi returning to the starting lineup Daryl Horgan and Ryan Gauld made way for the pair

Ofir Marciano was called into action early on to deal with a firm strike from Alex Bruce which he gathered at the second attempt At the other end Marc McNulty and Stephane Omeonga combined well before laying the ball into the path of Kamberi but Greg Taylor was alert to cut out the danger

With 20 minutes on the clock Omeonga was involved again cutting in from the left to curl a shot that was easily dealt with by Daniel Bachmann The hosts edged closer with Brophy blazing over and Taylor’s attempted cross bouncing back off Marciano’s bar Marciano displayed his incredible reflexes again on the half hour mark to tip Alan Power’s header round the post drawing applause from the home and away supporters

Killie however were not to be denied and took the lead from the spot when Alex Bruce was adjudged to have been dragged down in the box by David Gray by Referee Andrew Dallas when it looked the other way about Eamonn Brophy made no mistake from the spot The Under-21 Scotland striker blew the chance to double their lead when put through one on one but dragged his effort wide

Heckingbottom rolled the dice with a triple substitution after 65 minutes with Horgan Shaw and Agyepong replacing Kamberi McNulty and Omeonga. Shaw threatened after indecision between Bruce and Bachmann but the goalkeeper eventually took charge of the situation

With a couple of minutes left on the clock it looked like Agyepong had snatched a late leveller after he jinked his way in from the left before unleashing a ferocious strike Bachmann however was in fine form and somehow tipped over to secure all three points for his team

”It’s not a penalty. That’s not the reason we lost the game. We lost the game because we were rubbish. There’s nothing more to say we looked like a team that had nothing to play for “

Throughout the first half the tackling was just short of dangerous and Michael Weir and David Cooper were the best players in their respective sides and both did well to avoid injury

With Gordon Rae commanding in the middle of the HIBS defence HIBS coped with Rangers attacks admirably Iain Munro and Alan Sneddon provided drive from the full back positions Paul Kane worked intelligently in support of Weir and Callachan and the pace and control of Joe McBride brought a pace and tireless response from the strikers Gordon Durie and Willie Irvine whose sheer strength and stamina never ceases to amaze

Rangers plight was summed up in the 38th minute when Craig Paterson plagued by injury and only just returned from another lay-off was wrong footed by a cross from the line by Durie and used a hand to deflect the ball. Kane stroked the penalty sweetly past Nicky Walker

The second half produced some crowd trouble when rival fans managed to invade the segregated section of the main terracing

Cooper and McMinn tried to inspire a late Rangers fight back but Rae and Rough managed to keep them at bay

One of the last games played in front of the old East Terracing

Rangers were a poor side and HIBS won easily with a Paul Kane penalty and Ralph Callachan and Michael Weir pulling the strings in midfield in front of a poor attendance of only 7149

On a sad note news filtered through of the Bradford City Stadium Fire in which 56 fans lost their lives and 265 were injured

St Mirren provided the final home opposition of the season and in a stirring programme note Manager Walter Galbraith pleaded for “a rousing support from the Terracing this afternoon..you can play your part in helping the team” That encouragement was duly forthcoming and the players responded by winning the game 2-1 Baker and Baxter grabbing the goals

With two away games left HIBS needed three points to make sure of safety and that was the worst case scenario based on Clyde winning their one remaining fixture versus Rangers at Shawfield. The game in hand for HIBS involved a potentially tricky visit to Palmerston Park to face Queen of the South A tight pitch and a noisy support would cause problems but a large HIBS support made the journey and the noise they would make would cancel out the home support An early goal settled the nerves and at the end of the game Baker 2 Scott and Eric Stevenson would give the Hibees an emphatic 4-0 win

So we come to the last game of the season with HIBS visiting already relegated Raith Rovers and Clyde entertaining Rangers A huge HIBS support made it over the Forth and they were well rewarded with HIBS recording another emphatic 4-0 win with Baxter 2 Fraser and Baker the marksmen

It was celebrations all around Starks Park as HIBS had avoided relegation and to add to the relief word filtered through that Clyde had failed to beat Rangers

When the celebrations had died down it was sobering to realise that in 34 League games HIBS had won just 8 drawn 9 and lost 17 with 47 goals scored and 67 conceded for a total of just 25 points just two away from the relegation place

Walter Galbraith would have to do better if he wanted to keep his job and that new and better recruits were required

Gerry Baker finished top scorer with 22 goals in all competitions while Joe McClelland made the most appearances with 44 just one ahead of Ronnie Simpson

In celebration of the forthcoming coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11 the top eight British sides of the time would play a knockout competition. Arsenal Manchester United Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur would represent England whilst Rangers Celtic Hibernian and Aberdeen would represent Scotland with all the matches being played in Glasgow

Hibs drew a crowd of 45000 for their first round clash versus Spurs at Ibrox.

As early as the ninth minute HIBS were ahead when Ormond took a short corner to Reilly whose delivery into the box picked out Gordon Smith who made it 1-0. On the brink of half-time Bailey crossed for Walters to head past Younger and that proved to be the last goal of the game despite there being an additional 30 minutes played to find a winner

It is worth pointing out that a new lighter ball was used and both sides struggled to adapt

The replay was 24 hours later at the same venue in front of a much-reduced attendance Defences were on top until the 28th minute when McClellan fired home to put Spurs 1-0 up

The second half witnessed HIBS taking command of the game and so it was no surprise when Govan’s free-kick was smacked into the net by the predatory Reilly Then a superb drive by Smith was tipped over the bar by Reynolds and you got the feeling a winner should come from the Edinburgh men and it did on the ninetieth minute when Johnstone’s inch perfect cross was met by the head of Lawrie Reilly and the ball flew past Reynolds into the net to put HIBS into the semi-final against Newcastle United

It sure was, pretty sure we were on pitch a couple of times & certainly at the end of the game. Clyde still had to play Rangers but need to win by about 19 goals to catch us on goal average thanks to those 2 four nil victories. In the event Rangers won, 3-1, IIRC & we lived to fight another day. The nest season Jock Stein took over & we won the Summer Cup & the following season we had the chance for the double until Stein left! Some turnaround!

No reason to do so either as I think Celtic couldn't win the league and were out of the cup when he left. Might be wrong about that but still. My uncle still felt that celtic had shafted us

Remember speaking to Neil Martin who was very bitter about Stein leaving then. He maintained that we would have won the league if he had stayed.

Story goes Stein wanted to see the season out, Celtic had been at him for months to move. An "ultimatum" was then given that if Stein didn't move there and then the job would never be offered to him again.

It was very weird timing him upping and leaving given Hibs position in the League and Cup.
