Just saw that the supermarkets are all looking for temporary staff. Might be something in the meantime for the unfortunate folk that have been payed off or their hours cut?

It plays down the seriousness of it. Covid19 is up to 15 times deadlier than the flu. In a few weeks were likely to see hundreds of people dying from this and our national health system will be in breakdown. Governments around the world aren't taking draconian measures for nothing, this has the potential to touch all of our lives in that we could all possibly lose loved ones in the space of a year.
It’s hardly playing down the seriousness of it. If anything it’s reinforcing exactly how serious it is. There’s a good few folk think it’s just the flu.

Maybe something to do with the fact the army seems to be mobilising as per pictures from the Edinburgh bypass today...

    1. That's not the English flag, it's a medical symbol (the Red Cross).
    2. The British Army don't operate those vehicles.
    3. That's the wrong side of the road for the UK.

Hope this helps clear this up, those images aren't from the UK.

In among all the doom and gloom it's amazing to watch pockets of community develop.

I'm not sure if people are aware of the little card templates that people have been sharing. They are basically a card with some contact details people have been putting through their neighbours doors explaining that if they are isolating or distancing then the person on the card will be happy to run errands for them or call to check up on them. Tonight a group I'm in on Facebook saw someone say they had taken a call from an 82 year old lady who lives in their street, has no friends or family in Edinburgh and is isolating because of previous cancer treatment. She is almost out of food and was a bit embarrassed and sheepish about asking for help because she has no internet access to shop online. The person in the group agreed to pick up a shopping list and get what she could but they asked if anyone else could help. The number of offers was incredible and there are books and puzzles being delivered tomorrow. Another couple of people are going to call every other day to maintain social contact. I'm making a few meals for my Grandad to store in the freezer so agreed to do a few extra portions for this lady and others have offered home baking and so on.

There are likely a lot of other elderly people in similar situations. If you are young, healthy and it's safe to do so then try to reach out where you can. It really will make a difference.
My granny, in her 80's, got a card from a neighbor in her stair. She said she has not really spoke to them as they not long moved in. Note said if she needs anything at all, from shops or chemist etc to drop a note through their door. Just goes to show how thoughtful people are, and will need to be.
Luckily she has a lot of stuff in and lives 5 min from me, but knowing pretty much complete strangers are also thinking of her (and others) gives you hope. Especially if I end up getting this and being unable to do so.

Would love to be doing something like this although I’m supposed to be social distancing with underlying health problems (I work in the RIE , probably the worst place to be😷) my wife could do the shopping as I sit in the car. Anyone got a link they could share for the template?

    Link?

For what purpose? Lockdown, or because people are panicking like idiots?

There's so much utter ***** flying around right now, terrifying people and causing at the very least social media unrest, you're going to have to provide a source for that sort of claim or be labelled a troll.

Chinook Helicopters arriving into Edinburgh with troops tonight.

Guessing it will be to support/enforce a complete lockdown and protect sites that need need high level security and keep the city streets and businesses secure

People need to be reviewing evidence and making up their own minds. This ancedotal stuff is creating hysteria and getting shared far and wide by people that'd rather read a two second synopsis in place of verifying facts for themselves.

This will be the death of the economy, not coronavirus

According to the reports from PM and chief medical officer there won’t be a complete lockdown. Troops on standby to support emergency services.

I think this is more accurate than some of the hyperbole that is being floated.

Troops are being deployed in more or less the same way they are deployed when we have other civil emergencies like flooding and the like. Their capacity to drive HGVs, whether fuel trucks to petrol stations or lorries carrying food supplies to supermarkets or remote communities is a resource that will be helpful. Likewise, their capacity to back up ambulance and fire services is useful.

They're not at risk, but they can surely spread it?
The expert on radio Scotland today was saying that kids spread it a lot less than adults as well.
The have less chance of catching it, less chance of spreading it, less chance of getting ill with it and almost zero chance of dying from it.

Young lad at work has been receiving weapons grade scare mongering rumours on his WhatsApp.
Country on lockdown this Friday for 15 days.
Apparently 2000 soldiers and 50 coaches on the Castle esplanade.
Now, I'm not saying it is true or not, but how would the authorities think they'd get away with assembling such a large volume of personnel in the centre of this city that's logistically a nightmare to ferry folk in and out of(have you witnessed the Tattoo?).
Folk out there need to calm their tits!

Edited to add, the same guy says Prince Phillip has passed away but not from covid-19, to be announced in the next few days. I've heard all this before, the Duke of Edinburgh has died more times than The Rangers.
I know what you mean. I’m in a family what’s app group and my wee sister is constantly posting rumours on it. I swear she is enjoying the whole thing. I’ve turned of my notifications because it’s constant.

He said the medics are working without proper data. We should be testing testing testing all the time, and put the positives ones in isolation. What was the reason given that we couldn’t do this, and should we start doing it. Worked in South Korea
That’s been obvious for a while. We are getting this wrong big time. Testing should be running at ten times the rate it is just now.
Interestingly, Scotland is testing at a higher rate than rUK and our death rate has been lower. Could be a coincidence but worth increasing testing anyway.
Scotland doing nowhere near enough testing.

Good point and I’ve already apologised for posting the fake news but will do so again. I’ve inadvertently added to the mania and feel a right idiot about that for sure. Been a bit of a stressful day all round to be honest.

You usually add a measured tone to the threads you contribute to, and better still, you appropriately challenge some of the orthodoxies on here. And saying that, ideologically, you and I don’t really agree that much, I suspect!

I think you can be let off with this one

Argentine government to decide tomorrow on a lockdown of the country after 19 new cases were found today (now at 98 in total).

Quite unusually here you can stay here for two years illegally and then apply for citizenship, if things keep going as they are I might be holed up in this apartment for long enough to get a 2nd passport

South Korea knew the virus would reach them due to the trade/people links with China. They didn't hang about doing nothing. They made sure they had ample testing kits, got their labs & hospitals ready, organised the essential personnel to carry out the plan. They were ready for the virus. A little foresight and proper planning. That helps a lot.

The "kids can't get it" mis-information has just been proved nonsense as a 6 year old has been diagnosed in NSW, Australia.

It’s not that they can’t get it, just that they are way less likely to get it. And once they get it, it’s less likely to be serious.

It should always be the onus of the person sharing news to provide verification, especially in times of panic like right now.

I did look for it myself first prior to responding though, I'm not a complete ******** ;)

Looks like troops are being utilisied to potentially support and assist public service, not lock us all in our houses nuclear fallout style. That would have been a nice caveat to add to the post.

I agree with not wanting misinformation spreading, but I think you need to give the original poster a bit of slack on this one.

They just posted a small factual detail, and even provided the - reputable - source.
