I always thought it was in case their ship was attacked in the night!
I think it's the other way round - if they were attacking ships in daylight they needed to be able to identify enemies as soon as they went down to darker, lower decks.

And that reminded me of another one. Pirates didn't necessarily talk like pirates until Robert Newton played Long John Silver in a 1950s film of Treasure Island. They came from all over the place and would have talked in many different accents.
