It’s far from posturing. Abstention has been a long held principle for them. They refuse to accept that Westminster should have any say in ruling Ireland and equally that they should have any say in ruling Great Britain and they stand for election on that basis. If politicians of every party stuck to their principles we would not have been in this situation in the first place.

So you would say that denying a sometimes brutally repressed minority a legal political voice is a principle worth having? Who is winning from that principal right at this very minute? To me, it looks like rich powerful men in pin stripes and the abhorrent DUP. All SF members will be comfortable with that then?

You are totally ignoring what Sinn Fein stand for. And it isn’t Westminster. They see themselves as Irish, Westminster is our problem, not theirs. Abstentionism is a principle for Sinn Fein so I would think all their members are more than comfortable with that.

It's impossible for Sinn Fein to sit in Westminster, when they don't recognise its authority. They only started taking their seats in the Irish Dail after 1986; a move which split the party. Any motion to take seats at Westminster would be defeated by the membership. The first thing each Westminster MP is required to do is swear an oath of allegiance to the monarch. That alone would be impossible for Sinn Fein.

It helps that the south is now a lot richer than the North as well. Previously it was always the other way round but Ireland has found that independence within the EU is a good basis for building a wealthy society.

SF have quite rightly raised reasonable concerns, but where is the meaningful actions? As the whole of the UK is in political turmoil just now, I would guess that SF never ever thought that they would be in this position. But this is T-Shirt politics at the worst.
