I really hope we don’t fall in to a recession, so many people will be hurt.
Recession is inevitable after Brexit; it's just a question of how bad it will be. A no deal Brexit would leave us looking into the abyss.

    I agree.
But to actually hope for a horrendous recession as the poster I responded to?

It’s far from posturing. Abstention has been a long held principle for them. They refuse to accept that Westminster should have any say in ruling Ireland and equally that they should have any say in ruling Great Britain and they stand for election on that basis. If politicians of every party stuck to their principles we would not have been in this situation in the first place.

So you would say that denying a sometimes brutally repressed minority a legal political voice is a principle worth having? Who is winning from that principal right at this very minute? To me, it looks like rich powerful men in pin stripes and the abhorrent DUP. All SF members will be comfortable with that then?

You are totally ignoring what Sinn Fein stand for. And it isn’t Westminster. They see themselves as Irish, Westminster is our problem, not theirs. Abstentionism is a principle for Sinn Fein so I would think all their members are more than comfortable with that.

It's impossible for Sinn Fein to sit in Westminster, when they don't recognise its authority. They only started taking their seats in the Irish Dail after 1986; a move which split the party. Any motion to take seats at Westminster would be defeated by the membership. The first thing each Westminster MP is required to do is swear an oath of allegiance to the monarch. That alone would be impossible for Sinn Fein.

Haha, BJ already put firmly in his place by Junker and Barnier over the backstop. Has he not been listening to anything that's been going on? In a perverse way, I seriously hope the UK falls into an horrendous recession come this Winter.... Make 52% of the nation think what they voted for and what the Tories did for them

Patel paid £5000 for 5 hours 'work' as a consultant on MOD contracts. Cutting bennifits left, right and centre, making over 75's pay for tv licences and pay her £1000 an hour. Makes me sick.

You also have to swear allegiance to a queen they don't recognise as theirs.

    It's never going to happen.

It helps that the south is now a lot richer than the North as well. Previously it was always the other way round but Ireland has found that independence within the EU is a good basis for building a wealthy society.

And with respect, you are totally ignoring my question. Who is winning from this position? From what I have heard , the DUP are more than happy with the where Boris in charge. SF have quite rightly raised reasonable concerns, but where is the meaningful actions? As the whole of the UK is in political turmoil just now, I would guess that SF never ever thought that they would be in this position. But this is T-Shirt politics at the worst. To quote Billy Bragg...wearing badges is not enough in days like these.

It’s much more than t-shirt politics, it’s a long held principle. I can only applaud them for sticking to that unlike the charlatans that got us in to this mess. Do you really expect Sinn Fein members to swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen and come running to the aid of the UK? Why on earth should they? Those who voted for them did so on the understanding that they would refuse to take up their seats. To do so would be a betrayal.

To be fair, it's not like they all stuck to the principle.

Sinn Fein split and Fine Gael's predecessors dropped abstentionism when they accepted the treaty in 1921.
Sinn Fein split again and Fianna Fail dropped abstentionism when they accepted the oath of allegiance in 1926.
Sinn Fein split again and the official IRA/Sinn Fein (became the Workers' Party, then Democratic Left) dropped abstentionism in 1970.
Even the provisionals dropped abstentionism to the Dail in 1986 precipitating yet another split!

So, if it's principled, sticking to it you're after, it's Republican Sinn Fein (Continuity IRA) you want.

What I was suggesting Sinn Fein members elected to HOC all resign giving the SDLP a shoo in for their seats. Labour/SNP/Lib-Dems/SDLP alliance brindgabout a vote of no-confidence and bring down this evil govt. GE is called and SDLP don't stand against Sinn Fein. Hard Border is avoided.

    Aye, fair points.
Bit given the diffiiculty they had with dropping abstentionism to the Dail there is no way they would drop it for the British parliament.

Didn't take long for the home secretary to get her act together.

Before 310 jumps to her defence, I know this was happening, just the timing of it is great. For her.

Patel is a really nasty piece of work. It was her who said leaving the EU would mean British workers could compete with the Chinese and Indians - the race to the bottom. She's pro death penalty too; an old school right winger.

Today's revelations of her being paid a thousand pounds per hour by lobbyists is no surprise. A greedy, heartless walloper.
