Went along to Assai record shop on Thursday afternoon there, Bobby Gillespie was interviewed by Vic Galloway and then did a Q&A and signed records. It was a brilliant hour or so. He pretty much admitted that they didn't have the conviction to stick with their original vision. The record was intended to be a bit of a downer after Screamadelica and they were desperate to work with Dowd due to their respect for his work.
But they started messing with his mix almost immediately. Alan McGee never got what they were going for and thought it was too dull, not modern enough basically. Bobby said they took on board McGee's feedback and agreed to work with the new producer, George Drakoulis. He felt this was vindicated by the commercial success but the vision they started with was totally lost.
Such an interesting guy, could've listened to him talk about music for hours!
