    Kebab sauce

I've been living through the west for the last decade now - generally, kebabs are gash, particularly the chilli sauce, a plus they don't do salads dressing.

I'm missing Edinburgh kebabs, I've had one at each of the last here games, from three different places. At each place the chilli and salad sauce seemed the same. Can anyone tell me if they buy it in from somewhere? I need to get some pronto.

The chip shops aren't as good either with a few exceptions.

    Regional tastes.

People from the West tend not to think much of what we in the East have to offer in this department. I can't believe how many people find chippy sauce weird.

Clearly we in the East are correct though.

Clearly anything you have to drown in sauce to mask the flavour must be pretty poor :-)

Nobody able to tell me how to get or how to make the sauces. Seriously, I'm rattling here.

Apart from buying a few tubs next time you are in one of the kebab shops, I don't think I've saw it anywhere on sale in bottles like chippy sauce.

Just looked at their menu: £10.50 for a large doner and £2.50 for a portion of chips? The drunken hunger has no budget!

No it's the salad dressing he's on about. I'm sure it's salad cream that's watered down and a bit of seasoning added to it. I'm not really sure though.

Tahini sauce is the best salad dressing I have ever had on a kebab.

I've never tried it. I googled it and it seems pretty simple to make, I might give it a bash at the weekend.

I can't speak for Scotland, but down South the kebab houses buy their chilli sauce from various branches of Costco. Ask in the shop where they buy it as the chances are they don't make it fresh.

Never tried this but I'm willing to give it a whirl (BTW - I have a local Kurdish charcoal restaurant that is by far the best in North London and adding sauce is a sin).

Mmm - what will I have for lunch tomorrow

I got a bottle of Indian tomatos, garlic and chilli sauce in the Indian foods section of Tesco that was quite like the stuff from the kebab places.

Fast food outlets (kebab shops) are exactly that - they serve fast food and don't have chefs and won't do much more than slice the odd tomato and onion. They don't prepare fresh food and even their marinades are pre-bought.

The sauce will come in a catering pack that will be refrigerated - where it comes from I don't know...but it won't be from Tesco.

Ask the question when you are next in a shop and you'll get the answer.

If you want a sauce similar to the hot chilli sauce most of them use. Try "Chefs Larder" hot chilli sauce available on amazon and in many cash and carrys.

£10.50 for a large donner? Wow, that must be the most expensive in Britain. Never seen anything close to that price.

I wouldn't pay that for a donner. Chicken Breast Tikka chargrilled is my kebab of choice on the rare occasions I have one and I pay about £6.50 for a large one.

I've never paid that for a Topkapi large doner, I take it that includes delivery?

I started a thread about the browny yellow salad dressing a few years back but still not found the recipe.

My Mrs makes a version with salad creme mixed with balsamic vinger and something else, but it's not the same.

See, great minds think alike and all that. Can you check with her exactly what the recipe is for me please?

Will do mate, like I said its not the same as it has a more vinegary sour taste, but that could be either her missing an ingredient and/or using too much salad creme or somthing. The colour is defo the same though. Will let you know
