It's almost impossible to be original in music anymore. You learn by playing other peoples compositions. You improve by playing other peoples compositions. When it comes to composing your own music there are so many influences whirling round your brain that you can be plagiarising without knowing it.

And as far as more recent cases are concerned it's easier to recognise if your older and heard the "original" first.
