Dental implants

I've just received a quote for 2 x dental implants totalling over £6k. Seems a bit excessive to me so I'm considering heading to Spain, Turkey etc. where costs seem significantly cheaper. Just wondering if anyone on here has done this already and could maybe offer some advice and/or a recommendation for somewhere specific?

Been looking into this myself as I have two teeth missing which are noticeable. I currently wear a bridge type thing. I brought my own "cement" from Amazon and when it gets loose I refix it. Annoying but better than dentures which I can't eat with.
I am considering going to Prague where they have good prices plus it is a place I want to visit due to my interest in history. I agree 6K sounds excessive, I would shop around. I got stung for a £200 x-ray in London and with hindsight realise my dentist at the time was probably getting a kickback for the referral. I am now cautious and will be doing due diligence for any future decisions.

My partner is from Poland and she's always telling me to go over there for any dental treatment, apparently the price and standard of quality are much better than here.

I'm getting the final part of a bridge done this afternoon for a 1 tooth gap that's only just noticeable (number 4) it's costing me £200 through the NHS, I've never had anything like this done before, but during the first part of the bridge being prepared for he's cut through the tooth next to the gap which has basically ****** it, it's got extreme sensitivity now, he put a dressing on it until part 2 but even with the dressing it was way too sensitive, I've ended up taking the dressing off my tooth which has furthermore increased sensitivity but put a stop to the random nerve pain.

I hate the dentist, should have listened to my mother when I was a kid...

I've got a denture plate for me two front teef. I can't remember exactly how I lost them!

It's a right pest having to take it out to eat, especially in restaurants. Sleight of hand has to be employed.

I've been quoted four thousand for implants and it is a dilemma. Not sure about heading across Europe for it though.

How many visits are required in the whole process? I only know one person who has implants and it cost him 5 grand for 2 and it took 3 months with several visits.

£2500 - £3000 per tooth is pretty much the going rate locally.

It can be cheaper in places like London, where supply and demand drive prices down a bit. Prices will inevitably come down over the next few years. Big, fancy specialist practices tend to charge a bit more than local dentists, many of whom now do implants (or at least assist in the procedure) which brings costs down.

I'd be very wary going overseas as there is a huge unknown about the standards in various different places. The main problem would be where to go if you had subsequent problems as most dentists won't touch patients who come back from overseas with questionable dental work or complications. At least the inflated local prices give you a door to bang down when you've got problems and someone who is accountable for their actions. Having said that, standards are outstanding in some places. Hungary is a good place to go - there are lots of German and Austrian trained clinicians there who work to a very high standard but at a reasonable price.

The good thing about implants is their success rate - they are good. Bridges, dentures, gaps all come with problems. Folk who have implants are generally very satisfied with them, even though they are expensive. The stakes are high though, the big price brings big expectations so when people are dissatisfied they tend to be very dissatisfied.

You also don't want to treat the problem area in isolation but get a proper indication of the general health of the mouth and the prognosis of other teeth. Shelling out a significant sum of money only to lose other teeth fairly soon and find out that another big bill could potentially have been avoided (or rather reduced) by spotting other problems in advance is definitely something to avoid. Consumerism along the lines of "how much is an implant?" can be dangerous, the question should really be "how much for a healthy mouth that allows me to chew what I want with everything fixed in place that looks good enough for my needs?" is possibly a better way to view the process.

She said that everyone in the profession thought the cost of implants would fall over time but it hadn’t. In her opinion it was because the quality of dental workmanship in putting implants in had improved. So demand was there, supply had increased which should have lowered costs, but quality had gone up meaning prices stayed the same. Plus it is a bit of a restricted market in the U.K. so unless you go abroad, you can understand why there may be tacit agreement in the dental profession not to kill the golden goose.

I'd have expected prices to drop by now, that's for sure, but if they haven't then I don't think it will be because of any tacit agreement within the dental profession. The dental profession is appalling at standing together (in the UK anyway - elsewhere, such as the USA, dentists are actually very good at collaborating to see off competition etc) and is full of people who will happily undercut each other at every opportunity, and dentistry is certainly full of "disruptive characters".

I can't really figure out why the prices have stayed so high, other than to suggest that demand isn't really all that high. Implants are still expensive (depending on your point of view) and relative to other places Scots aren't all that keen on spending large sums of money on dentistry. I know of a few non-Scots who have considered Scotland to be an untapped market for "big ticket dentistry popular elsewhere" come North with their businesses and bomb quite badly. I suppose dentists can maintain a sense of "exclusivity" when it comes to dental implants, instead of them dropping in price to a level where they become a fairly everyday and popular procedure.

Interestingly enough, I am sitting at Bristol airport right now and decided to google "Bristol dental implants" to see what it was like here, and this was the first result to come up.

I had 4 implants at a cost of 12k fifteen years ago. Prices are relatively cheaper taking into account inflation. Half a dozen or so visits. They’re still going strong.

I lost my 2 front gnashers playing rugby years ago and around my mid 30's I got them bridged, around 3 years ago the tooth that was used to bridge them broke and now I have a plate again. I use Fixodent to give them extra security when eating and I'm nos used to them again, would love to get the screw in ones but they do cost a few quid.

I sent to Kreativ Dental Clínic in Budapest to have 2 implanta and some other work. They basically paid for the expenses of the consultation visit( flight up to £150 and hotel and transfer). The dentist I saw trained in Austria and was also a maxillofacial surgeon with 20 years of experience and he spends all his time doing implants and cosmetic work. The whole process was very efficient. The treatment options were outlined and printed out in English and costs were made explicitly clear.
I decided to return home to get quotes here and they were 2 and a half times as much. I had 2 visits to Budapest 4 months apart to let the implants settle. The clinic only paid taxi transfers on these visits and I paid flight and accommodation.
The only negative was it feels a little impersonal at times. They process a huge number of people. All went very smoothly and I made a holiday of it each time. My dentist here was impressed by the quality of the work and state of the art materials used.

Thanks for the info, all sounds fairly safe and fair. London is very expensive even living quite close to it I would rather make a holiday out of the whole experience. Budapest is also a place I would like to visit

I'm 62 and am about to lose 2 teeth. Given I got a shilling the last time I lost a tooth I'm not really looking forward to it although they're not show teeth :-(

Two implants with bridge (4 front teeth) £7,000 a couple of years ago - Rose Street Edinburgh.

About to get a 2nd attempt root canal which is 50/50 success rate if not it’s coming out. I’m 47 losing my first adult tooth will feel a blow.

Had six implants done at New Kirkgate Dental Care ten grand.

Most people stay in the hotel Arena that is linked to the clinic. It is in the suburbs about 20-30 minutes away on the metro and in a pretty soulless uninspiring area. I arranged my own accommodation right in the centre where there was much more to do and they reimbursed me to the cost of the Arena's rates. The Arena is expensive and not very good for food and drink. I got the metro out each morning

i done quite a bit of research approx 3 years ago and was quite happily set for going to Prague, pretty good reviews, when i mentioned the idea to my own dentist he said he had a few patients that had been to Prague for implants, and were very satisfied with the work done, then he came up with a great idea...referring me instead to the Edinburgh Dental Institute at Lauriston Place(was there today again coincidently) instead of a prague trip which iirc would have cost approx 2k+, i ended up getting a couple of implants courtesy of the NHS and sterling work done by edin uni grads(whatever they are) i think there's different materials used in implants, make sure they are Titanium :) pricey but well worth it

2 implants , 2 implant crowns, 4 x white filling replacements , 1 veneer replacement , gum deep cleaning and some adjustments to my bite.

Was going to go ahead with it but ended up just getting the deep gum clean which was £550 per visit x 2 visits plus 3 x consultations at £250 each.

Might look into go8ng abroad after ive paid the gum cleaning off.

I didn't think implants were available on the NHS unless it's a medical necessity. Maybe it was in your case.

I stayed near the Central Market Hall in Central Pest and that was ideal for bars, restaurants, shops and sightseeing. I would say anywhere in the area known as Central Pest would be ideal. Probably best to be fairly close to a metro stop. If you stay in the centre then you have 2 options to get to the clinic(they actually have 2 sites near each other). You can get the metro to the partner hotel, the Arena(at Ferenc Puskas stadium) and take the regular shuttle mini bus(you let the clinic know the day before when you need picked up) or take the number 2 metro to Ors vezer ter stop and walk about a mile. That is what I did. You can buy a 3 or 7 day pass for all public transport(about £11 and £14 respectively), great for getting around the sites too.

Yes, it is a real bargain compared to the UK.

Just back from praque 10 porcelain veneers 1 porcelain crown and root canal treatment 4200 pounds....was waited 13000 grand here .
All done and completed over 2 days

That’s a pretty hefty bill for a gum clean plus consultations. Assume that’s going private?

By my own admission, I’m lazy when it come to teeth and gum hygiene. I’ve not been to my dentist for about 4 years but had terrible toothache last month. Got an appointment day after I phoned. Offending wisdom tooth removed without question and a couple of x-rays of my mouth taken. Cost - presumably NHS rates - £20.

Just had 1st follow up appointment today and bottom teeth/gums cleaned and cleared of calculus build up. Second appointment next month to get similar treatment for top row. Cost - £30 in total.

In terms of time and cost, it’s a no brainier to me. And I certainly can’t complain about the quality of the work done. Bonus was I was also given a prescription (free of course) for a specialist mouthwash that costs £5 or £6 over the counter.

All in all - a result I’d say.:greengrin:greengrin

It certainly is. What happens if there's a problem connected to the dental work? Do you have to go back to Hungary or are NHS dentists here happy to help?

This thread is excellent reading. I had a molar removed earlier in the year and the estimated implant cost was quite high.
Is it worth going abroad for just one implant, or is it more cost effective to wait and get a few things done?

Dentists here can deal with it. there is the option of going back or they do have a couple of dentists affiliated to the clinic in the UK that you can see.

I suggest getting quotes from both. Kreativ pay flights up to £150 and some accommodation and transfer costs. See what the difference is and then factor in time off work etc and see if you feel it is worth it.

I’m just going to stay in their partner hotel. If I’m going into the city centre I just travel. I’ll be on my own so I can take it or leave it to be honest. Have to say I quite fancy a wee trip to Vienna for the day if time allows. That will just be a suck it (pardon the pun) and see.:greengrin

Good dental health is pretty easy to take for granted when you don't know anything different.

Being unable to chew food, having an embarrassment about a poor cosmetic appearance or having to tolerate infection, pain or odour can have a significant effect on somebody's quality of life. My grandad couldn't wear a lower denture and I remember seeing him eat a bacon roll with no dentures in. It wasn't a pretty sight, and we all reach a stage in life when eating (either alone or with company) is one of the few pleasures that we have left.

Some folk manage fine with all sorts of problems, sometimes smaller problems make people absolutely miserable. It is entirely up to the individual as to whether or not to fork out the sums of money and whether or not the results are worth it, but all of the places spoken about in this thread seem to be doing decent business at whatever price they are charging so there is obviously sufficient demand.

Few people have cash just lying around so for anything of this value there seems to be some sort of payment plan available. We all make sacrifices and pick and choose what we spend our cash on. For some people this will be a priority, for others it won't.

I’ve spent far more on fancy cars over the years. I don’t have those cars now.
I got 4 implants 15 years ago. Part necessity part vanity. I’ve still got them. As you say each to their own.

Currently sitting my hotel room in Budapest. In at 1.00 two implants placed and an extraction at the other side. Done by 2.00. Extraction site currently agony. Implant site piece of piss. So far........😬

Is there a timescale between extraction and implant that would be deemed too long for an implant to be possible?
I had an extraction about a year ago, and currently got a gap (molar, so not visible).

I wouldn’t leave it too long Stevie. I came over looking to get more work done than I actually have. I lost teeth quite a few years ago and the bone where some of my missing teeth wasn’t suitable for implants. I have a solution (which is a long story) to get by without dentures but not what I’d hoped for.

I have to say I am currently relatively pain free for the first time in years. So much so I’m going to try and get through the day without painkillers again probably for the first time in years. It’s just a bit of an ache where the implants went in. Fingers crossed. Off to do a bit of sightseeing today. 😎

I had an extraction about a year ago, and currently got a gap (molar, so not visible).

A year in itself shouldn’t be a problem but it’s all about the amount of bone. In molar areas there is only so much bone that exists above nerves, sinuses etc and if there isn’t enough bone then implants often aren’t possible. That bone shrinks over time, at different rates in different people.

If an implant is being considered, it’s often best to have the extraction done in a particular way in order to preserve bone, often placing the implant immediately.

Sometimes you just need to get the tooth out of there though. It’s not impossible to leave an area for a lot longer than a year and for implants still to be possible but there are situations when you can leave it too long and there’s insufficient bone.

..Lass in my work got het whole mouth done in Turkey last year. The results were fabulous. Done to a very high standard.

Only down side she went too white!

I got a front tooth implant last year in my dentist upp Toll X way... came in just over £2k iirc, it was quite tricky due to my top jaw bone. He is a top dentist, and would proper recommend.

Its about the bone... quick Xray and your dentist would tell you immediately if its doable. I got a front one put in last year and there was very little bone to workwith, and he had to use a minute pin, but he did it and I have had zero issues with it after years of getting crowns re done and refixed, a nonsense really. If I had the spare cash I would get the gap left by a molar removal done. Wouldnt hesitate.

All good.👍 went for a good wander today. Down the inner city via the ferencvaros stadium and shop. Done a few of the sights. Some city.
I was walking through the Christmas Market area when I bumped into a guy I know from West Calder. Unbelievable.😂😂. Clocked up nearly 15 miles.

Quick update a week on. No painkillers at all now. Spoke with my usual dentist who is going to remove the stitches in my mouth next week. Return to Budapest in nine months (because I’m an old can’t) or so for the bridge work etc. Only paid for work carried out so far. Excellent experience up to now. It’s going to be a long nine months.

Interested to read about the potential molar implant too. I had a gap at the back already and a tooth beside it that developed an abcess.

Failed treatment later and had an extraction thinking it’s ok to chew food mostly in the other side- it’s not. Unfortunately now 2 years down the line so need to check bone viabilty and assess options.

Spoke to my dentist about an implant today. Was quoted £3k.
He said that it would be done in stages though. Drill and fit the titanium screw and then wait a few months for bone to secure it and then fit the tooth. Is that what would happen if I was to do it abroad? A couple of visits for the work to be done?

Yes Stevie. Same process. Two visits/ treatments a few months apart. I would definitely consider Budapest. The company I have gone with were first class and very efficient. Nice city too. Going to incorporate a holiday and longer stay when I go back next year for the second visit. One implant will not cost anywhere near that over there. Should be under a grand. (Plus travel an accommodation to be fair) Have a look.

Did you need to get records from your current dentist or did you just rock up in Budapest and start afresh?

Pleasantly surprised at the estimated costs so far.

Kreativ will reimburse the flights if I go ahead although it's only £100 return and they will also pay for one night in the hotel. They advise a 3 or 4 day visit if getting treatment at the first visit.
How much was the hotel for the other night's if you don't mind me asking ?

I got one of my front teeth replaced with an implant about 15/16 years ago and still going strong. It was done well at the time fitted deep into the jawbone. Dentist checks regularly and while my gum and jawbone are receding a bit it was done deep enough that I don’t have any problems. I know at some point in the future I will have to get it looked at again but hopefully not for many years.

15 year old Implants still going strong and I just rocked up in Budapest.
I’ve since been back to my dentist (to get the stitches out)without any problems. He was actually genuinely interested in the work I was getting done.

I stayed 5 nights in the partner hotel (Hotel Arena) and it cost £183.B&B. Bear in mind it was in December and was slightly cheaper. The hotel transfers to and from the airport were all included in Kreative’s cost as was the shuttle from hotel to dentist. The shuttle runs every half hour.
So far so good and would recommend them without hesitation.
Really looking forward to going back this year to get the treatment completed once the implants have integrated.

I'm heading out on the 1st of March for 4-days. 2 x implants planned subject to the consultation going well.

Just wondered Greenlex - what did the actual itinerary look like for your 2 x implants i.e. what happens on each day and how long does it take? Just wondering so I can think about the sightseeing plans in between. Also, did you request any info on getting the 2nd session done in London or do you have to go to Budapest for that too?

Sorry just catching up. Flew out Sunday. Checkup and consultation on Monday. Two implants and a complicated extraction on the Tuesday. It took a little over an hour. Didn’t need to go back after that. I didn’t need any temporary dentures or anything as the implants were in spaces where i had lost teeth. I’m not sure that was normal but that was me done in two days . I’d had booked flights etc for a 5 day stay so did the sightseeing bit and flew back on the Friday night. Would probably needed a day or so for temp fittings if needed
Got stitches removed by my own dentist here a fortnight later.
I’m going back over I late Sept/Oct to get the abutments and bridgework done. (They don’t know yet but I’m going to get my current bridgework on existing implants replaced by them too) Definitely going back over to Budapest as the bridges etc are all made on site and any amendments or adjustments are only a floor away.

This is the bit you have to be a bit careful with.

Some dentists are better than others when it comes to this, and some have very strong views about patients going overseas to have treatment.

Most will be fine and remember - they have to work in your best interests at all times, otherwise they shouldn't be doing the job.

You can't really take for granted that your dentist will be co-operative though, even though they should.

All good. The procedure.was no more uncomfortable than an extraction to be honest Stitches removal cost me £20 as he had to charge me private rates.😂. My dentist was great. Really interested in the work I’m getting done abroad. It may help that my dentist doesn’t do implants and refers to specialists.
Budapest is a good experience. It may have helped that it was full of Christmas Markets etc. I liked it. Prices about on par with here.
Ps I don’t drink so no idea about that tho.

Just back from Malaga, there is a clinic there does the implant and the crown for 500 euros. Quite a difference from the figure my dentist here quoted of £10,000 for four, plus a new denture.

i asked a relative , who works in a dentists, why there is such a big price difference. The answer was Dentists earn more in this country. She told me just to make sure it's a good practice and the implants really are titanium.

I’m finding out that there are different levels of titanium, and some of the cheaper ones contain materials that may be harmful long term. Ive been told to make sure it’s titanium Grade 4 and made in Europe (Switzerland/Germany).

What is the issue with Titanium. Is it about how long it lasts. At my age I'm not planning far beyond 25 years.

Whilst it is probably true that dentists earn more in this country (the cost of living in this country is higher than in Hungary so you would probably expect that) there is massive variation between what dentists earn in this country - some earn eyewateringly high amounts and most earn fairly humble amounts.

Dental practices cost an absolute fortune to run. Regulation is very tight, we live in a very litigious society, rents and rates are generally high, and postgraduate education to learn about how to safely carry out advanced work such as implants costs a fortune. As a result there are a few more guarantees here (such as the issue regarding titanium in implants) that don't necessarily always exist in countries with different levels of regulation. An argument could be made that dentistry here is over-regulated - it is riddled with parasites - and lower regulation doesn't necessarily mean inferior treatment outcomes.

Got my initial check at 10 and had to wait until half 2 to discuss the treatment plan.
Costing a few bob too.

Hotel is not too bad. They paid for 2 night's and the other 2 nights are £51 each with breakfast.
£18 for a steak , juice and latte :-)

Ive got my own Dentist next week so will see what he says about the bridges etc.

It’s an initial downer when you go over with something in mind and end up with another treatment. Quite frustrating but they won’t do it if it’s not really required.
At least you’ll have a price to compare back home if nothing else.

I'm just back from Kreativ Dental in Budapest and thought I'd give an update.

Before going I'd been to see my own dentist and I was given a quote for 2 x implants at around £6300. I asked Kreativ for a quote before I went and was told £1660 for both. I also asked Kreativ if any follow up treatment could be done at their clinic in London and was told it depended on the outcome of the initial consultation.

I headed to Budapest on Sunday last week and went for my consultation on the Monday morning. I was given a free consultation and x-ray, then was told I'd need a CT scan, which would cost £85 and I agreed. They then told me about the plan they had for me that included removing all of my fillings and replacing them with crowns. All in all they wanted £7700 and I would have to spend a total of 2 full working weeks in Budapest getting the treatment. I made it clear that I only wanted the implants, which was now £3300 - because they were recommending 3 x implants versus my dentists recommendation of 2, they were recommending another type of scan, a nightguard etc. I'd also need to go back later in the year for a full working week. I declined the treatment, mainly because of the time I'd be required to spend back in Budapest, apparently it couldn't be done in London.

All in all, I'm not disappointed. I understand the reason why the cost went up and I was fine with it (some of it was optional) but I wasn't prepared to take a second trip for a full week just now. Still considering my options, I may well end up going back but will start to look closer to home again.

Budapest for me was a great city, but for my tastes, could be done in a couple of days. It's very picturesque and, if you like architecture and history, then you'll likely love it. Great food, decent beer. Was in the Kaledonia Scots bar to watch the derby and there were 3 or 4 Hibbies in, with a token Jambo tucked in the corner. Overall I enjoyed the experience (of being in Budapest, not the derby!) and thought it worth sharing It for anyone else thinking about using Kreativ.

I'm astonished how much people are being asked to pay for implants

I've just looked at my own quote (referred to earlier) and for one of my front teeth (no. 21) I've been quoted 175€ for the metal post/inlay core, 60€ for a temporary crown while the proper one's being made & 500€ for the tooth/crown itself = 735€ (£640) in total, far less than the UK, Budapest or wherever - unless I'm missing something? :confused:
