I thought exactly the same when I saw it on the news. The fact they seemed really quick to reassure us that the vaccine would still be effective seems suspicious to me, how would they know so quickly. They’ve ****ed up with the Christmas plans and they need an excuse to scrap them.
I think the relaxation around Christmas recognised that and was an attempt to try and mitigate the damage by trying to treat everyone like adults and make them think seriously about whether they really need to travel/meet up with family etc.
However, to scrap the plans at the 11th hour would be almost as controversial as introducing them IMHO. Not only would it mess up the plans of many families but it will break the hearts of some for whom this window was going to be a bit of a godsend. While I'm broadly against the relaxation, I know of two families whose members include those who will not see another Christmas and I have complete sympathy with their decision to get together.

The email just said a higher percentage of the pupils currently self isolating are in S5 and S6 and they will have fewer teachers in school in the following weeks so they decided to ask them all to stay at home.
They also don’t want to have to set work both online and still teach others in class.
They don’t have to isolate, just stay away from the school.
