It doesn't honestly matter if the UK reverse their decision to relax the rules at Christmas - millions will be doing what they want anyway and the end-outcome will still look horrific in January regarding new cases and deaths.

Some dark months ahead I fear...
Herein lies the issue. Some people aren't going to comply over the Christmas period. It doesn't get our FM off the hook though, she could have handled being painted the gringe by the right wing press, it's happened before and will do again. They can maybe hang their change of tack on the new strain of the virus.

I think it was yes, but thats not to say there weren't talks going on behind the scenes. Optics will have played a part in this; Westminster want to look like the generous, fun-loving uncle and the rest of the home nations have to fall in line; further to that I think it's been done in part to save having to enforce travel bans as many people would do what they wanted anyway.

Not that that has deterred other countries in Europe from blanket no's and lockdowns again.
I just don't see Sturgeon signing up to anything due to being pressurised by behind the scenes talks with WM. If anything, she would have diverged at that point to promote the SG cautious approach as opposed to the WM less cautious/chaotic approach.

If I was taking a guess on any possible u-turn coming, I would say it will be Wales who have already heavily hinted this is a possibility.

I think it will be reduced to 3 days from 5. The damage is already done though.

I’ve planned to visit my 85 yr old mum pending a negative test this weekend. If the rules change, that’s going to be really tough decision to make, and hugely unfair as expectations will have been raised. Better not have announced this in the first place. I suspect the genie is out of the bottle though and the government now can only emphasise trying to keep it as safe as possible.

I don't understand the logic here. Millions might well be doing what they want but millions more will be sticking to guidelines. How is this reasonable, to abandon a strategy just because some people won't respect it? If a rule cuts deaths by only 50%, say, it's a waste of time?

I think this should have been the only type of scenario where rules were relaxed, in the way you can currently extend households for caring for someone vulnerable or single person households. They relaxed it too much with multiple households mixing, and 5 days is mental. 1-2 days max would have been ample.

Yep, nothing to do with pressure from Westminster or anything financial. She's made the decision on loneliness/mental heath grounds and probably the fear of bad press which isn't really like her. This is a biggie though.

FDA find Moderna safe. I wonder when the UK one are due to assess it and when it could then be added (5m doses?) to the vaccine roll out plan.

Edit: I think I jumped the gun there and there's still a hoop to jump through.

One of my work colleagues based in Kent, has tested positive for Covid
His kids brought it from school, and now the whole family has had it
No signs of a cough, or loss of smell/taste, just a cracking headache and feeling lethargic
I had an email from the school connected to my daughters nursery yesterday to say they had a reported case and contacts had been traced. 3rd time since the start of November. Then this morning I had an email from the gym informing me there had been a 'number of cases' linked to there. Thankfully I've been a lazy ******* recently and haven't been in a couple of weeks.

I actually got tested again at the weekend. I had a cold a couple of weeks ago with the sore throat, sneezing, runny nose etc so didn't think much of it. However I've had a cough for over a week now that I just can't shift and I still feel crap, usually I'm over a cold pretty quickly. Thankfully it was negative.

UK won't get any Moderna vaccine until Spring at the very earliest. Also only ordered 5 million.

Moderna appears to offer the highest protection and is easier to transport and store than Pfzier so it's probably the "best" of all the vaccines. The UK has a tiny amount in order though as we put most of our pre order into Oxford.

I would definitely expect to see East Lothian moving to level 3 today.

  16. #27885
This may have been asked and answered but is the testing of students returning home for Christmas being included in the daily updates? If so could that be behind the small rise in the positivity rate?

Just heard from our school, S5 and S6 who haven’t been allowed in school since 4th December have not to return until after the holidays, absolute disaster for them preparing for prelims.

They could have vetoed it so they are all complicit. They have all made several bad decisions during this crisis, we can’t blame Westminster for them all.
No, but we have no idea what sort of pressure was applied in this instance.

Yepp I agree that would have been the point she would have changed her tack.

Three council areas are moving up, everyone else is staying the same.

There will be another review next week.

Nine cases of the new variant have been identified in Scotland so far, all in Glasgow.

9 cases of the new strain identified in Scotland. May be more transmissible.

  27. #27896
Additional precautions being considered and changes to Christmas plans being discussed later today with other UK Governments.

Is it just me that finds the timing of this new strain of the virus and the likelihood of the change to Xmas rules convenient to Government?

I don't doubt that there is a new strain but my understanding is that there have been 25 new strains identified since February. I've never seen such publicity about a new strain previously.

It's a shame we don't have more faith in our government and our media but I also smell a rat.

That was a bit of ‘telt ye’ about Edinburgh and Midlothian there with regards to them staying in Level 3 last week

East Lothian back into 3, along with Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire.
