Yes I commented on that thread. A bit amazed that so many appear to be so blasé about the situation. How much crap needs to happen before they open their eyes?

Speculation growing that the whole tariffs action is to get a 0 tariffs agreement with the EU. If that happens, then the UK might find itself outside looking in and very isolated.
White house just said any reports of pauses or 0% tariffs are "fake news". He's just said that if China don't back down on retaliatory tariffs by tomorrow then China will go from 34% to 50%
The last thing he wants are 0% tariffs and a bigger deficit, he wants no trade deficit. In his head selling goods for currency to a nation is him getting robbed, he's been going on about trade deficits since the 80s.
The only people the tariffs will hurt are the American public and nations that do retaliatory tariffs are just hurting their own public. That goes for every nation bar China, who are winning internationally from any trade wars. They should try and get lots of 0% deals in place in the meantime
I have a vested interest because I have a house in France and for the last few days I’ve been astonished at how far the pound has fallen against the euro.
Initially the pound jumped when the tariffs were announced especially as Europe is 20% and UK 10%.
Maybe this is the reason why.
Britain is in a very perilous state, although I think the rumours wil probably have came from Musk saying there should be synergy between Europe and USA.
Whether musk and trump are still besties is another subject
I'm happy for them to feel it but unfortunately it will cause a worldwide recession like 2008. That recession caused an extra 97 million people worldwide to go into hunger. Such is the capitalist system, millions worldwide will die from this and Trump will still be playing golf
All that is true but we really need Americans to get back to valuing democracy and their fellow democratic allies. The consequences of not could be even higher.
And a side benefit is the tanking oil price will be killing Russia.

Only positive is that the rest of the world will surely realise we can't depend on one nations for defence, trade, supply lines etc. Europe should have been self protected years ago.
The Russian economy has taken a pounding the last few days crude now at the lowest point in 5 years.
I see some politicians are already trying to use this to bump net zero. Starmer pushing back dates on hybrids etc is calculated and pathetic
I agree. There is no good option here, that protects the innocent citizens affected by this and curtails the US government's mobster-extortion approach to the economy and geopolitics. They need stopped, and it needs to happen quickly before it gets even worse and more dangerous.

There's also that there is zero chance Trump wants 0% tariffs on the EU when that would exasperate the fake problem he has in a trade deficit. He said yesterday “We put a big tariff on Europe. They are coming to the table; they want to talk, but there’s no talk unless they pay us a lot of money on a yearly basis—not just for the present, but also for the past"
He thinks the EU owes them for every year there was a deficit and wants to bring it as close to even or preferably surplus. It's so daft
Where's the Washington Post when an evil lying president and his collaborators and enablers need called out?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f73a737e45.jpg

The opinion and editorial pieces in the Washington post are almost universally negative to Trump and his administration.
Even the Bezos decision for the paper to not endorse a candidate in the election was panned by all the contributing opinion pieces as well as being criticised by the editorial board.
The tv news media in the US is awful across the political spectrum but I think they have some excellent newspapers.
[QUOTE=Bostonhibby;7932470]I agree with you, I was alluding to the Post doing what it did to Nixon.
That would require a functioning congress and Republican Party prepared to impeach him when presented with the evidence. The fact they whitewashed the Jan 6th stuff and didn’t impeach him on that let him know he could do whatever the **** he wants.
The New York Times had that 8 page pull out special during his first term which detailed in indisputable detail the various frauds (mortgage and tax) his business empire was built on. It made no difference.
It doesn’t matter what any journalist digs up now because the US is truly post truth and the MAGA lot will just call it fake news and a witch hunt and it’ll make no difference.

This from threads
Ok. I’m shaking. This is my first thread. My small business that I’ve had for 20 years is probably dead as of now. Trump and his idiotic tariffs killed my livelihood, my families business today.
Just now, I got a small shipment via UPS of products my customers are waiting for.
…A small box. A small box of stuff that can’t be made in the USA because we don’t have the materials here.
The tariff bill I have to pay the US government is $5,000.
$5000 needs to be paid up front. How can I stay in business unless I jack up prices now? As a small business I’ve always prided myself on giving …great customer service and lowest possible prices. This is NOT sustainable.
NOT ONE economist says tariffs will be good for the country. If me, an average American is already feeling this and will have to possibly shut my business of 20 years…then I know we are ALL in danger of a collapsing economy.
…All for a vanity act of a narcissistic president that knows nothing about business.
America will be his 7th bankruptcy.
No, I didn’t vote for him. I knew this would end badly in 2016 when he came down that golden elevator in Trump tower. A TV reality star that was playing a role. An act. An unserious man, a felon and a SAer.
…I know I’m writing into a void, none of my post are ever read…but thanks Threads, I needed to vent.
And…if you own a small business, don’t order products from oversees anymore until you jack up your prices to cover your losses. I’m sorry for my loyal customers, some have been with me for 20 years and I love them all. TARIFFS ARE A TAX ON US ALL!
Time to buckle up.
Feel very sorry for this person.
Many decent Americans will be victims here but the orange fuhrer won't care about this one as he didn't vote for him so isn't one of his foot soldiers.
Hopefully many of his voters and supporters will have their equivalent experience too.
Sent from my SM-A750FN using Tapatalk
Feel sorry for those that didn’t vote for him but not for a single person who did. They need to feel the full force. They knew it was going to be very bad for some people and were happy so long as it wasn’t them. Now it’s them and they fully deserve what’s coming.

:agree:
Absolutely zero sympathy for anybody that voted for Trump. As you say, a vote for Trump was very clearly a big **** you to the people it was going to **** over. So many of them were just too stupid to see they were part of that group.
If you voted for Trump, you are everything that is wrong with humanity.
Yep, classic Nazi Party tactics, divide and rule, create hate targets and hide your real agenda, in this case it feels like there are very few boundaries and it's a cult of "self".
It is so poorly planned that there's no way Trump supporters aren't going to be affected, it comes down to how many of them aren't able to see it, or admit it. He might still be shooting very thick fish in a giant barrel.

I know it would be nigh on impossible, but has there ever been a calculation of what a completely American made iPhone or something similar (or at least as much as humanly possible) would cost if it was completely built in the states? From the building of the factories, manufacturing, labour etc, it would be an interesting calculation.
If we use an iPhone as an example, they cost about $1300 right now I think. Would it be an exaggeration to suggest they’d have to increase in price to about $15000?
It's a great question.
Cleverer people than me were talking yesterday about how the Americans will either have to work for the same wages as the Vietnamese, Chinese and Mexicans or pay sky high prices for similar products to maintain wage expectation in the States. And that's before you factor in available skills.
And all this whilst they are hounding out potential "foreign" labour and seeing favourable trade deals being struck between countries they have hit with tariffs.

Thanks all. That truly is an unbelievable thought, and that’s just one item. Throw in TVs, vehicles, furniture, car parts and a million and one other things and the numbers become absolutely insane.
I saw an explanation regarding a tangerine and even the description around the price of that was mental. Things like the nets you buy them in, the labels, the transportation of them, the tractors that they are moved around in, the warehouses they’re stored in, the shops that are built to sell them and lots of other bits and pieces that would all sky rocket in price.

Yeah, you're right.
The "cost with tariffs" isn't nearly as scary as the other one.
Quite apart from the upfront costs in setting up a production facility in the US, the profit margins at that price will be so slim as to make it uneconomic. Would-be manufacturers would also be wary of the fact that there might be a change in Government, and policy, in a few years' time.
IMO, people and businesses who can afford it will suck up the price-increases for now; others will hold off upgrading.
Yeah, that's one of the reasons why tariffs might not work as well as Trump seems to think, unless Apple shift the manufacturing for the entire worlds supply of iphones to the US, the cost of manufacturing a 100% US made iphone is likely to be much higher than just getting one from China and paying the additional tariff on it.
For reference, there's an interesting video on youtube detailing the costs involved in making somebody's dream phone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bny2NJkJGXc
which gives a rough idea of the cost of making a phone from scratch. The cost of an iphone would clearly be much less as this is a one off, but it does give you an idea of the costs involved in setting up new tooling lines and assembly lines.
My current iPhone is over 5 years old and I’m hoping to get a few more months out of it although the speaker is deteriorating on it now and I’m switching to Samsung after seeing the Apple boss standing with Trump at his inauguration.

He can if he can make it outside America, and do a tariff free deal with China.
Maybe someone should whisper it in the orange guy's ear? People are always telling him they don't want to pay more for everything.
They might get a super deal from a super deal maker.

Talking a lot and doing nothing to upset Agent Orange and probably thinking we got luckier than most, by sheer fluke, is pathetic on our part.
We don't have much of a hand to play being a very small trading bloc and largely irrelevant in other areas but fawning over this toxic version of the U S leaves a bad taste. I've got my doubts about Starmer's ability in a crisis.

I am 100% convinced this was a deliberate ploy from Trump and the rest of the Oligarchy to short the stock market.
I would love someone to do an analysis on trading, what was bought and when, and then what it was subsequently sold for.
The same thing happened with tariffs a few weeks ago.
Did anyone buy the dip ?
Unless they are that very sinister head of homeland "security" figure?
Maybe a token appointment since we now know so much of their security depends on when China decided to turn on and off supply of those pesky defence related exports that Maga's ain't got and can't produce for themselves.
