HIBS went to Ibrox in confident mood sitting proudly at the top of the table after having already defeated both Celtic and Hearts
Manager Willie MacFarlane got the players to swap jerseys prior to kick off with instructions to confuse the Rangers defenders even further during the game by interchanging positions.
Eric Stevenson grabbed the number 9 jersey and kicked off as centre forward.
Rangers debutante fullback Brian Herron couldn’t handle the pace and ball wizardry of Peter Marinello as he ran through the middle of the Rangers defence in the centre forward position - ripping them a new one and scoring two first half goals. Willie Johnston replying for Rangers.

This was my first visit to Ibrox and as a 8 year old,,,, wow, seat in the centre stand with my dad and a work friend of his who was stauncher than staunch. Being 8 I didn't know that you didn't cheer when Hibs scored. It was the fist time I had been called a little fen@@@ barsteward and we were all threatened. I just didn't understand the hate!
I've loathed them ever since. PS we beat them 3 times that season.
Mixu, with a header IIRC, to equalise. I gave up a night out with work that had a free bar to go through. It was also peeing with rain, but none of that was going to stop me paying tribute to a fantastic player. Had a few pints in The Drookit Duck after to dry off!

Hibs were hoping to transfer their brilliant League Cup form to the League and they got off to the perfect start when Stevie Cowan scored against his old club heading in a Brazil free-kick off the underside of Jim Leighton’s crossbar.
Aberdeen were struggling to cope with the pace and power of Gordon Durie’s runs as he continually stretched their defence but slowly but surely Aberdeen were starting to gain the upper hand in the match
Late into the second half and running out of ideas, Alan Rough twice denying Billy Stark with brilliant saves, Alex Ferguson introduced BP Youth Cup winning youngsters Paul Wright and Steven Gray into the fray and it was the latter now sadly deceased who snatched the equaliser for the Dons latching onto a brilliant Neale Cooper through ball to score past Rough from the edge of the box with a low right footed drive

Hibernian 0 v 0 Liege
The kick off was delayed for fully 15 minutes to allow the near full capacity crowd into the Stadium for Hibs’ 69th game in Europe
When the game did eventually kick off the HIBS fans also discovered that Liege had brought l’autobus with them playing a sweeper and two markers and everyone and his cat in midfield
Hibs played some neat football but were perhaps guilty of taking the extra touch at times and were also guilty of not using the wings to bypass the congested midfield The Belgians resorted to fouling - largely going unpunished and time wasting tactics early in the match
Hibs’ best player in the first half was Michael Weir who tried to lead by example taking the fight to Liege and was unlucky when he got too much elevation on an Evans cutback
Hibs had a goalden chance to take the lead 11 minutes before the interval when they were awarded a penalty when Keith Houchen latched onto a long through ball from Paul Kane in the box his attempt on goal went past the post but his feet were clearly taken from under him by Wegria in mid shot - an obvious penalty
There was a delay of two minutes whilst Alan Sneddon received treatment for an injury and I noticed that Captain Andy Goram ran the length of the pitch to make sure Houchen took the kick
When eventually he did take the kick the shot wasn’t firmly enough placed and Munaron was able to make an easy diving save
HIBS continued to make all the running in the second half with John Collins blasting over from a good position The Belgians were happy to soak up all the pressure with the ever dangerous De Sart making good contact with a 25 yarder and Danny Boffin sweeping a deflected shot wide of the target in a seperate move
HIBS introduced talisman Stevie Archibald on 65 minutes and should have taken the lead 5 minutes later when Neil Cooper got on the end of a Gareth Evans corner only to see his excellent header beat Munaron all ends up but could only watch as Danny Boffin headed his effort off the line

Fresh from their 2-1 win at Ibrox in front of 60000 HIBS now faced Falkirk at Easter Road but were without the services of Lawrie Reilly and Gordon Smith who were away on Scotland duty
Falkirk could smell blood and very quickly raced into an early two goal lead with Duncan converting two penalties. Goals by Ormond and Turnbull drew HIBS level going into the interval.
The tide had now turned and in the second half HIBS exerted their authority with further goals from Souness and Turnbull

Liege game - was it Bosman?
Dropsy was a brilliant name for any keeper. He signed my programme outside the players entrance after the home leg.
I do believe if memory serves me that Greenock Morton were the first club to bring over the Scandinavians to Scotland, and some very good players came over to play. John Madsen was a great centre half for Hibs, well remember on frosty freezing hard pitch he would play in base-ball boots.
Morton were early in having Scandinavian players but I think Dundee United were first with top level players. I think they sold Persson to Rangers
We had two Norwegians in the 78/79 season - Isak Refvik and Sven Mathieson. For some reason they only played about 10 games between them before they went back to Norway. Cannot remember why they stayed for such a short time, probably some contractual problem.
Morton must have had close to 20 Danish players in a few years in the 60's & as you say, others followed suit. In addition to Madsen & Johansen they had a couple of Sorensens, I think the keeper Erik ( who may have been the 1st import) also ended up in Govan, a couple of Nielsens ( Fleming?) & a Jensen or 2, possibly Bjorn. They also had Per Bartram who went to Palace but they may have been in 3rd Division South at that time. Hal Stewart was definitely the initiator of the Danish influx.
Hearts had Rene Moller and Roald Jensen both now sadly passed away
Roald Jensen was held in that high esteem in Norway that his countrymen built a statue in his honour

Nothing lucky about Hibs avoiding relegation that year due to relegation being scrapped. At the end of the season Hibs WERE NOT in the relegation position. We were push that season but Hibs have NEVER been saved from relegation by league reconstruction.
[QUOTE=weecounty hibby;6332387]Agree!
Was speaking from the point of view of that point in time and going 5 months without a win under Lexo - painful stuff
I think we beat Clyde in the Cup ??
It was not my intention to imply we were anywhere near the wooden spoon
We finished second bottom
It was John Blackley with the V sign. Was at game and 10 mins after it was abandoned the fog lifted. I have been at Easter Road a game against Motherwell where the referee played more than 10 mins in fog which was much worse than the fog at Parkhead that day. My father who was a referee was disgusted at the way Davidson handled the situation and also the way the Scottish League handled it.
Seemed to be at the time that the ‘establishment ‘ had an Old Firm bias and they would use every trick in the book to make sure teams from the East would not win i.e. Mickey Edwards getting suspended for two months Celtic bringing fixtures forward to let key players serve suspensions, not ok for Refvik and Mathieson to play in Scotland but ok for Robert Prytz. There was no way Celtic were winning that match just Sloops way of saying FU to the SFA
Bobby Davidson sent John McNamee off in a Cup Semi Final at Hampden versus Celtic
Big John was adamant he never touched the guy
West coast bias
All of the above is of course imho
Yes it was a well known at the time he also did not like East of Scotland teams especially us. My father heard many stories about him amongst the referee fraternity. It was amazing in these days the number of refs were areas around Glasgow. Bothwell Rutherglen Bishopbriggs etc. Bob Valentine was listed as Dundee although he lived in Broughty Ferry.
Just saying like!!!
