Would be good for our European chances if we manage to hold onto Bushiri, then sign Porteous, Henderson, Triantis and Myko.
Why couldn't we pay £1m/£1.5m?
Even if we sold him in say a year and he has another good season he's going to be worth at LEAST double that so we'd make our money back.
One or two in panic mode already regarding the lack of players in.
Not getting guaranteed European Football until Christmas (at present) will have undoubtedly affected transfer planning. We will have less funds and I expect finances will be handled a bit more responsibly now, given the £7m yearly loss which was announced not long ago.
We are in a decent position at the moment, but understand we cannot stand still. There are still quite a few high earners in the squad who still have to be moved on, Jair & Vente for example.
Gray and MacKay have now got us to the position where we really do not need that many new players. If we manage to move on Jair & Vente this will free up space for two new forward players. I expect the delay in some new signings is that we are still negotiating with Bushiri & Triantis.
If we had guaranteed European football I get that we would need a good number of quality players to be a success in both Europe & domestically. Maybe some think we should spend fortunes in the hope of getting through to the league phase of the Europa or Conference League. I don't think we should gamble on this and in turn affect the financial stability of the club. As others have said it was a sliding doors moment when Aberdeen won the cup and it changed things massively.
100% not getting guaranteed group stage has impacted players we can attract this early on which is one of the most frustrating aspects on Aberdeen winning the cup. I genuinely think we had a chance of getting players like Stuart Armstrong if we’d got the groups. Players like this Simmons might have been more likely to choose us over Bolton too. Not to drag up old ground but it’s been really disappointing we haven’t been able to secure some really excellent signings early on which I’m sure we could have if we had group stage football
Such is life
Don't think any are in panic mode. Think it's more just some of our key players from last season are yet to be confirmed. If they don't come back that does leave us a significant amount of work to do and that's only to be as good as last season. We need to try and improve on last season as that really is the key from pulling away from the rest. No team yet has been able to sustain 3rd for a couple of seasons.
Has it though? Would we really be splashing cash on players who would be with us beyond next season. What if we don’t qualify for Europe next season? Then we have expensive players on our books or a bloated squad.
I doubt that our transfer budget has been impacted too much. Our bread and butter is the league and that’s the squad quality that we need to plan for.
Maybe as an outlay, but if you are spending high transfer fees, that comes with high wages. Say we get someone for three years, pay a large transfer fee then fail to make Euro football for the following 2 seasons. That’s not a sustainable model.
We need to progressively improve, year on year, in the league. The Euro places, and the prize that comes with it, is a bonus and will help us to progressively improve faster.
I still find it slightly baffling that, unless Bolton were offering significantly more money than us, someone would choose that level over potential European football? Even with the size of the job ahead of us to get group stage football, even 2 or 3 ties is more than he's going to get at Bolton.
And if not for the cup draws we could well have been looking at 2 or 3 Hampden trips last season as well.
What bit of Hibs not getting guaranteed group stages was Hibs issue? The club did everything it could did it not.
If we weren't planning for not making it right up to that last penalty then we wouldn't be doing our job.
Like it or not at our current level, Europe or not, we are going to get knocked back by players at the level we want to be, purely because of money. That is life in the world of Scottish football.
At no point did I say it was Hibs issue. Not blaming the club one bit.
Just a **** year for Celtic not to win the cup
Europe groups stages would have made a huge difference especially in attracting players who we may now struggle to get. Just a fact really but no fault of the club
I think some overplay this bit about European football. It may have been a wee bit different this year if we had European football to Christmas. However, the Yam and Aberdeen have had European games to Christmas over the last few years and have not really been shopping for players in a different market to us.
I tend to think it's the bread and butter trips each year to the likes of Livingston, Falkirk, Dingwall over the years that tend to put some players coming up to play in Scotland.
Genuinely think Triantis signing would have been done early if we’d made the groups. We’d have more cash, he’d get group stage football in run up to a World Cup. Feel there would have been other players seeing us as a good option with a chance to move up the ladder.
I love Hibs, and I love Edinburgh and wouldn't want to be anywhere else if someone offered me Bolton/Plymouth/Blackpool and the same money.
But I think a lot of us are probably entirely over estimating the draw playing a couple of qualifiers is for the vast majority of English footballers. For someone like Xavier Simons he's probably never even contemplated Scotland as a career destination at any point until this summer. He probably knows next to zero about what it's like up here, it would be seen as a step down from his perspective.
Agree as ***** as it is I would say the majority of English players would value a big club in League 1 over Hibs. I think if we had guaranteed Europe it could definitely sway it our way. However, players aren't gonna bank on us winning 2 likely unseeded ties to get this.
Agree.
This is where I have difficulty understanding why we would have a better chance of getting Triantis even if we had European games to Christmas. We would have a ceiling on what we can afford and within the constraints of what we are paying other players. I expect we have offered Triantis the most we can afford.
If we had a guaranteed amount of say 10 European games this season, we cannot give players 4 year contracts based on this. What if we don't qualify for Europe next season. Then we would be stretched financially.
I get that this may seem a bit unambitious, but the club has to be sustainable in the long term. The club strategy should be to try and sign and develop players, to then sell on at a profit. European football is not the panacea to all our ambitions.
I tend to feel European football for clubs such as ourselves, Aberdeen & the Yam is more exciting for the supporters. Don't really see it as the crucial thing in potential players signing for us.
Being a Londoner and speaking about how close his family was and how they liked to go and watch his younger brother play who’s at Fulham I wonder was Bolton a better option because of less travelling too , apart from the extra on his deal maybe that was a small incentive in McGrath joining us too .
Would Hibs kindly, with all due respect, **** off with the constant app notifications about Father's Day.
Rocky Bushiri-related let downs on a daily basis.
European football definitely allows people to prove themselves at a higher level though. If they have a couple of good games playing at the higher level the group stages provides they could definitely earn themselves a bigger move. I think alot of teams are still fairly hesitant to shop in Scotland as then general standard of the league is still pretty low.
Get excited every time my phone pings only to be told about something or other we were told about 3 days ago.
Missed the boat by not getting one of the new kits out for fathers day. I'd imagine quite a few Hearts, Dons, Celtic and Rangers supporting dad's will be sporting new shirts this Sunday.
Yeah thats a really good post.
Fully agree when it's put like that.
We put the green tinted specs on and say why the **** would you not want to move to Edinburgh, but the reality is that for most players it's probably more like "why the **** would I move to Edinburgh?"
Have a feeling we’ll hear an announcement today. Absolute no info just a hunch
Yup. Don't want to repeat myself but Aberdeen winning the cup could be and probably will be a sliding doors moment for Hibs. We couldn't have done any more but that cup final shock would have been transformational in terms of who we could sign and who we could be going forward. A real sickener and I'm not over it by a long way. A very Hibs thing to happen.
Can see us going for Mark O’Hara if we can’t get nectar over the line
Same here, it's really quite ridiculous bad luck to finish 3rd twice in 6 years and no group stages, yet sandwiched inbetween that are Hearts and Aberdeen, doing the exact same thing but getting group stage football, fair play to Aberdeen winning the cup this year, but of course Hibs end up the biggest losers of it.
For a team that plays in green, we certainly don't get the rub of it with big decisions.
Bolton sign ex St Mirren defender Richard Taylor.
I'm not yet fully over it from a selfish holiday point of view. Had one eye looking at booking 3/4 potential away trips this year. The chances of Scottish teams getting groups stages after winning the cup/finishing 3rd after last year is no longer anywhere near as easy. Futhermore looking at the coefficient going ahead it won't be back to that for around 5 years minimum.
It was a bit of a sickener at the time but looking back now and we had a great season in finishing 3rd , beating hertz and Aberdeen twice , old firm , watching hertz struggling and falling to make top 6 . Third was our aim and we succeeded . I’d gladly settle for a similar season again with maybe a better run in the cups .
Brian Graham signs for Falkirk
Decision on Rocky next week and he has multiple options. Hoilett weighing up decision due to his family being in London. Hibs not interested in bringing back Myko as it stands and have other preferred targets

🚨🇦🇺 OFFICIAL | Daniel Arzani (26) has signed with Ferencvárosi TC. 🇭🇺✨
Ferencvárosi finished 1st in the Hungarian first division and will play in the Champions League qualification rounds. 🇪🇺🤩
Right, so it's all about your holidays then
Can anyone verify the issue of the Scottish co-efficient and entry to group stages being harder going forward, and remaining so for 5 years minimum.
Edit: just so I can return to glass half empty mode, just as I felt for about a day after the cup final result :-)
Think the club have been more than fair to them, but it’s getting to the point where we need to move on if they’re not signing.
Rocky will probably have offers of more cash. I’m still not convinced he’ll be playing at a better club. But money talks. If Hoilett goes for those reasons then fair enough, again he’s not going to a better club.
Hoping we see some movement in the next week or two. I think we’re in a strong position, as strong as we’ve been at this point in time for years. But we can’t be complacent, which I don’t think we will be.
Yip I would agree with that. The entertainment has taken me back to the Mowbray period. Looking forward to going.
Nothing we as a club could do about the cup final so just have to let it go.
Nothing better than standing outside a pub on Leith Walk on a sunny day after a match looking at the happy faces of fellow Hi-Bees. Magic 🇳🇬🇳🇬
Don’t want to be telling anyone how to feel, but if that’s your takeaway from the season we’ve just had, that’s mind boggling
Exactly, we achieved the best league position possible in real terms. Unlucky to draw Celtic away twice in the cups, but can’t let the outcomes of those dictate how you feel after such a successful season, the tremendous togetherness of the players, fans and club
I think when we signed Hoilett last year, it was on the back of Aberdeen withdrawing their contract offer as he was taking too long to think about it.
He’s obviously someone that won’t be rushed, I hope we can keep him, he’s a class act. We’ve got McGrath in now anyway so he’s not someone we desperately need an answer quickly from, if we have to give him a bit space to think about our offer, I’m fine with that.
Perhaps already posted but Myko not being pursued according to the Hibs Observer - glad we are in the market for an upgrade.
Would love both Rocky and Hoilett to stay and I'm sure the club has back up targets if these fail, do wonder if Junior decides not to if we will go in the market for another CAM, would expect Rudi to go out on loan which would leave us with McGrath and Campbell to play in that position.
Next week could be a key week with decisions and the draw.
I like myko but you saw with gayle last season the wily smaller order guy had more presence because he knew how to use what he had
For me myko had too many times he was brushed off or couldn't hold it up and his Movement in the box could sharpen still.
He was improving last year which is the encouraging thing but not irreplaceable
Also happy we're not pursuing. The guy was a worker but for me he always seemed a bit off balance & never seemed to get a clean strike away - they all count but a couple were fortunate to go in & a couple he should have stuck away.
I'm sure he's benefitted from the coaching at Hibs this season & hope to pushes on to better things.
Real Madrid have signed Franco Mastantuono, the youngest player to ever feature in a competitive matchfor Argentina, from River Plate.
River Plate will receive 45m euros (£38.5m) after the 17-year-old's release clause was triggered, which sets a new record for the Argentine club.
His six-year deal begins on 14 August, the day he turns 18.
gulp
Happy with that Hibs observer update.
Hibs still being confident about Rocky and Hoilett is really promising and I think it’s the right decision about Myko
Was from the Scotland's coefficient page on twitter who is spot on with that stuff. Basically said due to a number of factors such as how coefficient is now calculated, losing previous very good years and other nations scores ect. We have very little hope of getting it within 5 years and it will be closer to 10.
I'd be interested to know what offers Rocky has on the table, the last I heard was his only option was a club in Egypt.
I'm glad we're not chasing Myko as I never came away from a game last season thinking he'd had a good game.
I hope Hoilett stays, he's a match winner.
