Whilst we are on the topic of joining/leaving the motorway, the weird junctions on the M8 where you exit the motorway on the right rather than the left. It has the effect of often slowing the outside lane.
The road outside the Eye Pavilion, Chalmers Street??? What a mess it is with pot holes. Probably the worst I’ve seen in town almost 4x4 territory.
Making Manse Road in Corstorphine buses and taxis only at certain times, absolutely crazy and totally unnecessary 😡
Personally, I wouldn't say it's absolutely crazy. A lot of traffic comes up Ladywell Ave, on to Manse Rd then North via Clermiston Rd, also traffic from Saughton Rd Nth heading towards Drum Brae.
It used to be called rat running but it seems to be the way of modern navigation apps like Google & Waze.
Manse Rd is very narrow and doesn't even have full width pavements and the "bus gate" times align with the comings and goings of the local PS target than bus lanes in general.
Traffic planners are trying to keep the bulk of road users to wider, more suitable roads rather than cut through narrow residential roads.
The volume of traffic going through EH12 has grown massively in the last 25 years and it's a horrible place to walk through these days, never mind drive.
No problem, but out of interest, what is it you disagree with?
I'm guessing from previous postings you've made (mostly Indian restaurants 🙄) that you're local.
You must know the rat runs of Manse Rd, Kirk Loan and Station Rd. In this case, Manse Rd can get overly busy at peak times, and at the southern end the pavement is barely 600mm wide. This road shouldn't be an arterial thoroughfare for folk to save time going via Drum Brae r-a-b. Genuinely, I've sat behind many a vehicle at rush hour on Saughton Rd Nth, they've cut off at Manse road, I head towards Tesco, we get to Drum Brae at the same time. No time was gained or lost.
I understand many drivers think they have the absolute right to drive on any road that's open to the public, and it's difficult to argue against that, but with ever increasing volume of traffic and pressure on all spaces for all users, surely it's not a bad thing to focus the majority of traffic on the larger roads and restrict/reduce access to minor roads?
I remember the stushie when they closed off the western end of Gylemuir Rd as folk used that to bypass Drum Brae roundabout, don't think many folk would want that decision reversed these days 🤔
I don’t consider it a rat run, I consider it a legitimate route that saves time and gives access left or right to St Johns Road. We’ve had the inconvenience of the ridiculously thought out “street park” at Featherhall Crescent now this. Yes I am local, I’ve lived in Corstorphine for over thirty years, my son went to Corstorphine PS so I am well aware of the geography of Manse Road and how it has coped with little or no accidents or issues for many years. It’s all about opinions and I’m sure some member of the clowncil who thought this one up was also responsible for many of the other farces across the city.
It seems you can drive up to Iceland and park outside of it but during the bus gate times you would have to reverse or turn round and drive the wrong way down a one way street to get out as you can’t exit onto St Johns Road!
My mother in law lives on Featherhall Place, and because they’ve closed the road that would bring you in from the West, and you can’t turn right at the Centurion, i usually have to go round past the primary school and then come to Manse Rd because the one way system there is better than meeting oncoming traffic on the wee road that comes up past the doctor’s surgery.
No need to make Manse Rd restricted further.
Coburg St is closing both ways as of this Monday coming, more friggin nonsense by this council.
This is the councils fault, roads that used to run fairly freely are now being clogged up by poor trafficking systems, no infrastructure upgrading despite increase in population and poor road lay outs, drivers are taking alternative routes to avoid being stuck in traffic. I hate driving through residential areas but it can save a fair bit of time if the traffic is worse than usual.
Successive complaints about the council without the use of the word "clowncil"... :rules:
In my experience, it's not a new thing. 20+ years ago I'd come off the A8 before the zoo and take a left on to Pinkhill, through Traquair Park, on to Corstorphine High St then back to Drum Brae r-a-b. During busy times this could save me (easily) over 10 minutes. Proper rat running and obviously not ideal for those living on what should be quieter roads.
Traffic/congestion has got a lot worse since then and like you said, no new roads are being built to expedite traffic out of the area.
Since the congestion charge referendum (and subsequent rejection), the electorate have installed councils of various flavours but they have all had a common theme of implementing schemes that are more stick than carrot. My opinion is we've ran out of carrots, during busy times there's more car than road and something (clearly) has to give.
I genuinely don't know what the answer is but it's clear as day that someone in charge is trying to focus traffic down main/trunk road and quieten down through traffic in residential areas.
Kirkliston cross roads.
Drivers who don't indicate at roundabouts when they can see there are cars waiting. Like the twat in Longniddry this afternoon.
A new on/off ramp, both sides, on the M9 just west of the M90 spur.
Was an agreement between West Lothian council and the multiple house builders developing Winchburgh.
A lot of the traffic at the Kirkliston Toll in the evenings was traffic heading north to South Queensferry or West to Winchburgh.
The hope was, the new junction would alleviate the pressures in Kirky itself.
Cheers, I see it now. It was always a faff for east bound M9 traffic to get to the Bridge in the past.
Driving down the Drumbrae this morning, bus on my inside so nowhere to go as the erseholes coming up the hill pull out into my lane to get past a parked truck blocking their lane, nearly a head on collision. Do these erses not realise that they have to give way to me and can’t just head into oncoming traffic to avoid their obstruction!!!!! 😡
Everything related to the new Corstorphine Low Traffic Neighbourhood trial.
One of the daftest things I've ever encountered.
Not using mirrors! 2 hours ago, overtaking on the A1 when the car I'm about to pass pulls out. Not sure they saw me as completed their manouvre instead of staying in their lane. Fortunately nothing up my backside to stop me braking. My dog in the back very unhappy though.

People in normal size cars who drive down a road with cars either side as if they need the space of an Arctic, get the **** over, you have at least 8ft of space on your nearside.
Inconsiderate parking. Plenty room for two cars but some plonkers park in the middle of the space.
I've just watched one of them struggle to get out of a space to let the passenger in as the car next to it left no space to open the passenger door.
Of course, if they hadn't parked at a stupid angle with their front left wheel in the disabled bay I am now parked in I could have left them space! To make it even better, its an Audi.😁
Traffic chaos due to the Highland show. Carnage both ways at Newbridge not helped by the light not working on the round about. Folk just blocking the roundabout.
Traffic backed up onto M8.
Carnage coming in from Fife too seemingly.
It's been that way for at least a decade There must be some way they can improve it?
People that faff about in petrol stations, especially when they are busy.
Get your fuel, pay and get out.
When they keep the normal crossings at temporary lights rather than implementing a temporary crossing that is in sync with the temporary lights.
Got stuck at the temporary lights at Drumbrae for ages this morning on my to pick up my dad for a hospital appointment. The reason was the traffic was completely missing it’s turn on green because of the green man at the crossing yards before the temporary lights always being in use at the same time. Seriously, get a temporary green man set up that gives pedestrians a turn after every green light for traffic.
Motorway middle lane hoggers!
Just drove back from Sheffield and due to frustration at their ignorance, I started making a point of passing them and then sitting in middle lane right in front of them just to show them how frustrating it is.
People that park on corners. There's a section in my street that has got ridiculous with multiple cars parked round two corners that are opposite each other. I've had a couple of near misses as it is impossible to see if anything is coming in the opposite direction.
It wasn't an issue when we first moved in two years ago but is now because one house got sold and the new people refuse to park in their drive for some reason and have two cars and another house have had multiple works done to their house (garage conversion, back extension and a seemingly never ending landscaping work to their back garden) which has meant a skip has been in their drive for over a year.
Drove up the road from Manchester last week late evening. Road was dead and I could drive for miles at a time in the inside lane. Every so often despite there being almost no traffic on the road I'd find myself approaching some tool sitting in the middle lane for no apparent reason totally oblivious.
I really don't know if it's the case that people don't know how to drive on motorways properly or just don't care.
Came across similar behaviour myself over the last few weeks driving back from Cambridge & Oldham. I tend to utilise cruise control when the roads are quiet, sitting at a constant speed but for my own amusement I'd overtake the middle lane guy, pull to nearside, ease off, let them pass then repeat. Three lasso's was my PB before the driver realised what was going on. Naughty and immature I know, but how else you gonna break up the long drive?!?
When you are driving behind a learner so give them a bit extra space and some self important muppet drives right up your erse.
Where are you going? It's a busy street in a city, even if you get past me you are just going to meet another car 10 yards down the road and if you get past them then same again.
I honestly thought the middle laner had been shamed and had all but disappeared but I drove to London and back earlier in the year and couldn't believe how many there still were. One of them got what looked like half a takeaway lobbed at them from a white van passenger!
The last time I drove on the M6 heading back from Liverpool a few years ago I came across a middle lane hogger on an almost deserted stretch of the motorway. It was wrong of me I know but I sat behind them for about two miles flashing my lights every minute or so, they never flinched. When I eventually passed the driver who looked like she was gripping the steering wheel tightly with both hands and staring straight ahead line in a trance, I seriously think she didn’t even know I was behind her!
I'm confident it's been mentioned in this thread before, but I've noticed a resurgence in P-poor signalling on roundabouts. Over the last few days I've noticed quite a few cars indicate right but then go straight on. A lot of this has been on Calder Rd, East-West, so basically they're in the left hand lane, I'm in the right, I see them indicating right so hold back and they end up going straight on.
Unsure where this behaviour is coming from but I did notice that nearly all the drivers were young Asians. Is this something that might be practiced in other countries (carefully assuming it has been learned elsewhere)?
This practice is being taught by a lot of driving instructors currently. It was never something that I used as, if you were going straight ahead then you didn’t signal at all, only do it when you were passing the previous exit from the roundabout and intending to exit at the next junction.
Really? Presumably the logic is 'signalling right means I'm not leaving at this exit', but I'm surprised that driving instructors teach something that contradicts the Highway Code:
"Rule 186
Signals and position. When taking the first exit to the left, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
- signal left and approach in the left-hand lane
- keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signalling left to leave.
When taking an exit to the right or going full circle, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
- signal right and approach in the right-hand lane
- keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout
- signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.
When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
- select the appropriate lane on approach to the roundabout
- you should not normally need to signal on approach
- stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
- signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want."
Foreign tourists in hire cars, end off.
Rude bus drivers,I know it must be a difficult job with daft passengers, pedestrians and other road users but they should not tar everybody with the same brush.
I'd probably have to confess to being a bit of a middle lane hogger at times. Not if it's completely empty but if I'm going faster than something that I can see up ahead I'm not going to pull in and out again when someone behind me can just use the third lane to go past me if they're driving quicker. :dunno:
It usually ends up that on a relatively normal stretch of road I can see a spread of slower moving vehicles down the left, myself and other faster movers in the middle, and then those going 80/90+ on the right.
On a similar theme. Was cycling to collect my daughter from pre school last night. Was a hill I had to cycle up to the cross roads. Was near the top and the light was red. A car whizzed passed me to make up 20 yards before stopping behind a car at the red light that had been waiting there the whole time. I just looked at them as I passed and into the bicycle box. No issue with cars over taking cyclists, just can’t work out the point in speeding up to overtake so the can get to a red light and be second in the queue 5 seconds quicker.
Brummies. That's all.
Lanark road between Juniper Green & Balerno is really bad for it. I mainly notice it when driving, but the amount of cars that overtake cyclists when it’s not safe to do so is crazy. Like they can’t wait another 15 seconds to get round the bend and confirm it’s safe to overtake so they just gamble that there’s nothing oncoming.
often, and I mean often, come across drivers who even on a straight road, seem to think they shouldn’t need to wait until there’s no oncoming traffic to pass, and will casually move out a bit, and go past the cyclist, and seemingly expect oncoming traffic to just move over a bit for them, whether there’s room or not
Not sure if I've mentioned this before but drivers who sit just under 70 on the motorway into the moment you pull out to pass them, at which point the ***** decide they're Lewis Hamilton so you either have to pull in behind them again or speed up ridiculously to pass them.
What goes through their head?
wonder if they’re the same people who can’t maintain a consistent speed on the motorway. You’re travelling along at 70, overtake a slower moving car. A few miles later, the same car goes shooting past, whilst you’re still doing 70. Another few miles, you overtake them again, whilst still travelling at 70.
Arrived in the UK yesterday morning for the first time since Covid and the state of the roads is abominable. I can remember them being not particularly great but the trip from Dover to Blandford was akin to driving on farm roads. I'm not really surprised at the amount of shredded tyres at the side of the road because some of the potholes on the motorway were like moon craters, real tyre killers.
Anyone travelling without a satnav would also have trouble finding their way around because most of the road signs were overgrown and unreadable. It feels like Highways England have just given up trying to maintain the roads.
Two in one this morning. Poor lane discipline and tourists driving causing havoc.
I was turning right from Lothian Rd onto the West Approach Rd. There's two lanes for turning right and I went in the right hand one as everybody was in the left of the two lanes and the lights were just changing to green.
The car that had been second from the front in the left lane just veers as far possible over to the right into my lane right in front of me as he's turning. He then drives for a stretch over two lanes, goes back into the left of the two lanes he was driving over and I go to pass him (he was also driving at about 10mph)and he starts veering over into my lane again. No indicators. Clearly didn't see me, so hadn't checked his mirrors. I have to basically do an emergency stop because of this. I beep my horn but he's oblivious to this and continues over the two lanes until we get to the lights at Morrison Link, presumably when he saw cars in both lanes.
When I managed to pass him (crapping myself whilst doing so as I didn't know WTF he was going to do next), I had a look and it looked like they were tourists.
Tourists aside, there seems to be loads of people who struggle when there is more than one lane for turning right. I live in South Gyle and have a few instances of that kind of road layout around here and there's always folk veering into the wrong lane. Usually it is the opposite of the above with folk all going in the right hand lane and then going as far left as possible when turning. In fact someone did this later on in my journey when turning onto S Gyle Access from Bankhead Drive but luckily I was behind him in the same lane rather being in the lane he was veering into.
Was driving behind what I’m assuming was a tourist tonight up Broughton Street. They were crawling up it so probably not sure if where they were going.
They missed the turn off for the street they wanted so just starting reversing down the street!
Talking of reversing, we were at the cinema at Fountain Park at the weekend. The folk in the car in front at the barrier to get out the car park hadn’t validated their parking ticket so couldn’t get out. After trying to use their debit card in the machine which obviously didn’t work either, they just just started reversing towards us expecting us, and the entire queue of about 10 cars behind us to do the same. We didn’t. The passenger then got out and asked us what they were doing wrong. So we told them they should have either validated the ticket wherever they were visiting or paid at the ticket machine with us pointing to the nearest one. Instead of doing the non-dickish thing and just going and paying since they were holding up loads of cars by this point, she went back into the building to wherever they had been to validate the ticket.
Not a driving pet peeve as such but has anyone else seen a big hike in their car insurance this year?
Got my renewal quote today and it's about £160 up on last year. Had a look at the usual comparison sites and a few places direct and not finding much cheaper. Still the same car, no claims in the last year so no claims in unaffected, no new drivers added etc etc.
Bit of a pain in the erse.
Petrol stations that haven't thought about how caravans or trailers actually get back out once they've filled up. I've had to reverse out from the car pumps twice after filling up because there's not enough room to drive out forwards if you're driving anything bigger than a minibus.
Yep, it's everywhere apparently: https://www.theguardian.com/money/20...-petrol-diesel
Ours (Admiral) wanted about 50% more than the previous year. Managed to find the same cover for close to the old price elsewhere.
Mine isnt due for a couple of months but my understanding from the insurance brokers I deal with at work is a general tightening of the insurance marker in general so not too surprising.
My house insurance renewal came in and whilst I've been quite happy with AXA they wanted to bump it up by £150, a 60% increase. It took a bit of hunting around but finally found the "no thanks" button and progressed through all their pleads and reassurances that they were the best insurance company etc. Compare the market found me a quote that was only £20 more and so saved £130.
Presumably enough people just allow the autorenew to happen that it's worth losing customers who'll do a wee search. Although I thought there were new rules about that.
People who don't use the right turn lanes in supermarket car parks and make all the traffic wait until all the traffic exiting has gone before manoeuvring. Every bliddy time...

Fuel prices back on the rise. Stabilised got a wee minute around mid 140s but back over 150 per litre for a diesel again
Was in NI over the weekend and theres as much as 20p a litre difference. Drove past an asda at 134.7p
Tesco Musselburgh car park.
Pothole galore as you drive into it!
Taxi/Uber drivers deliberately driving slow to increase their fares and holding up traffic.
Idiots.
Mine had an astronomical increase this year. No matter what comparison site I used or any amount of haggling worked. They were all the same. I think I calculated it at around a 110% increase. Caveat of an open claim where I may or may not be found at fault but still an absolute joke of an increase. It got to the point where no matter what car I put into the quote engines the quotes were all the same.
Getting caught on Manse Road, that camera must be making a fortune, I thought about appealing as signs have been spray painted, 2.50 was my time caught at on Friday afternoon, when did they start having different peak times. £30 paid.
I hadn't realised it had been reinstated, it was vandalised/cut down a few weeks back.
FWIW, it would be simpler if they (The Council) just made it a full time bus gate like Prestonfield Ave and the Jewel. They obviously want to stop traffic using it as a short cut (Ladywell Ave to Clermiston Rd and Saughton Rd Nth to Drum Brae Sth). Let's ignore the fact that no buses use the road during operational times 🙄
They must have had it back up within days, as you say just as well closing it off to cars, and the council need to get the signs fixed as well, it’s a nightmare in that area just now, roadworks at the school for the next 3 weeks and another burst pipe on Glasgow road which seems to be taking a while to get fixed.
