Edited to add, the stretch of A8 that brianmc alludes to is a bugbear of mines also. From the RBS at Gogar to Ratho Station it's a National Speed limit. Some drivers continue at 40, some accelerate up to 60, a few drivers deliberately obstruct you from driving at 70, self policing I call it.
I've seen Rover driving cardigan wearers go apoplectic with rage when you pass them at 70 on the inside. If they want to sit in lane 2 at 60 they're more than welcome, I stick to lane 1 all the way and will drive within the limits at all times, inevitably the tortoise in lane 2 continues at 60 WELL in to the 40 limit towards Newbridge,,,,
As mentioned elsewhere I drive a works vehicle with a tracker that alerts and reports on you if speeding so I'm not a complete hooligan!

I've done a speed awareness course and any dual carriageway way with a barrier of any kind between the roads in the centre mean its a 70mph section when the NSL is displayed. If there is no barrier between in the centre then its 60mph or whatever speed is displayed on the signs in that particular area.

The guys taking the course also said that the 20mph speed limit with the flashing lights around schools are also only advisory and not enforceable, I found that surprising to be honest.

That’s interesting on your second point. Mrs Overdrive failed one of her many driving tests for doing 30 in a flashing 20 school zone which is quite funny in itself given she’s a school teacher :faf:.

On a similar note, someone once told me temporary lights are only advisory. Not sure if that’s true or not.

Ah yes.....drivers who simply aren't concentrating.....like the guy who drove along Joppa in front of me yesterday at barely 20 in the 30 limit then decided to speed up to 30 when he got to the 20 stretch at Porty.

When you're at a junction with a main road waiting to turn left and oncoming traffic from the right turn into the road you're on without indicating meaning you could really have pulled out but now have to wait until the next wave of traffic passes.

I have some sympathy for that driver (not much, but some) - I live in Dunfermline so an nowhere near as familiar with e Edinburgh roads as I used to be. Some of the roads are very hard to tell if it's 20 or 30 as a limit.

I know what you mean and it happens to me in some areas of Edinburgh. But the 30 limit is a wide road with no houses or shops on one side. The 20 is narrower in an urban area full of shops and houses...Porty High Street. I just assume these folk are jambos anyway :greengrin

Between Millerhill and Sherriff Hall westbound is always murder during the day.

I always seem to get caught in traffic jams when I need to fill up with fuel and start to get stressed out about wondering where the nearest filling station is and if I have enough fuel to get there.....My bad :greengrin

Folk who sit at 50 on a motorway, forcing you to slow down, which then makes it difficult to move into much faster moving traffic in the outside lane. I know the speed limit is a max, not a target, but on a nice sunny day there’s no need to be going that slowly, it’s dangerous.

Drivers creeping about with no lights at all on this morning when visibility was very poor.

Maybe they're just heeding advice and driving economically. Get your indicator on early, get out and pass them. I can get an extra 100 miles per tank of fuel by sitting at 60 instead of 70 up and down the motorway.

The difference is likely to be minutes, maybe just enough time to get the kettle on. All depends on the distance, as an example when the A9 is fully dualled you will save 18 minutes on the journey to Inverness from Edinburgh.

I do a 40 mile trip weekly. If I drive normally, it takes 45min. If I drive fast, it takes three quarters of an hour. Go figure :dunno:

Adaptive Cruise Control :brickwall

Just recently change my car and new one has this, it's "driving" me nuts.
It slows you down if you are catching up on a vehicle in front of you and maintains a safe distance until they move out of the way, fine but the gap it leaves others jump in to the space and it sees a closer obstuction and slows you down even further. Can't see a way of disabling the adaptive bit and just have cruise control on it's own. :brickwall

You need adaptive adaptive cruise control where you can set the distance between you and the car in front.

FWIW I've got it and it's great for caravaning. I just find myself a truck travelling at 110kmh and slip in behind it, cruise control and lane correction does everything else.

By the same token, folk that don’t use bus lanes when they can. I drive in the same bus lane every Saturday morning, which isn’t an operating bus lane at the time and the amount of times drivers in the right hand lane just start drifting across into the bus lane when it ends without even looking and almost hitting you is ridiculous. Then when you hammer the horn to stop them crashing into you they look at you as if you’re in the wrong.

A geography specific one.

As you come off the eastbound M8, onto the A8, at the junction which takes you down to either a left turn to Airdrie/Cumbernauld, or right toward Carluke/Wishaw and Lanark, there are 2 distinct lanes. They're even marked on the road.

Left lane either turns left toward Airdrie, or goes straight on (back onto the A8/M8). Right lane goes around, under the A8/M8 and up toward another roundabout (where the left lane goes left or straight on, and the outside lane turns down toward Holytown). The amount of idiots that begin in the left lane, and go right around toward Wishaw etc, meaning those in the correct lane can't manoeuvre over into the left hand lane to come off the roundabout is absurd and drives me batty every afternoon.

A second geography specific one (but courtesy based too).

On the M8 heading into Glasgow, just after J13 where the M80 joins it, every morning is bloody chaos. The left hand lane of the M8 is filled with cars trying to get over into the new 2 left lanes (that head toward the Cathedral Precinct), while those IN those two lanes are often trying to get over onto the M8. It's just chaotic. And so it's filled with people, whom, rather than letting you out and then moving into your space, will continue to drive alongside you as you both get irate at the other. At that same section, there are so many morons who think it acceptable to go right up to the edge of that slip, blocking off the right hand lane heading down to the Cathedral Precinct as they try to squeeze into traffic as far up the queue as possible.

Pi$$ poor planning when it comes to infrastructure maintenance.
A couple of years back Saughton Road North was resurfaced almost in its entirety, a year later Scottish Water come along and dig large trenches for new pipes and as is always the way the surface is nowhere near as good as it should be.
Then, after the political football that is the Queensferry Crossing, it opens with much fanfare last autumn, this week lanes were closed to accommodate scaffolding & screening in the centre refuge for "vital maintenance",,,, vital,,,, really?

This happens quite a lot.

I was tanking up the M90 to Perth. Away in the distance is a car tailgating a lorry. It's miles away.

I get to within 100 yards and without indicating the car pulls out and sneaks past the lorry inch by flippin inch!

I remember when folk used to say there is nowhere to stop so they kept going until they found a place they could stop out of the flow of traffic.
Now days everyone just stops, hazards on and don't care about the inside lane of traffic that now has to funnel into the outside flowing lane to get round them. Even worse when they do it suddenly without indication and just throw on the hazards after braking. It's cars, taxis, vans, lorries they all do it.

That's because answering their mobile phone is more important than parking sensibly and with consideration to other road users. Their phones mustn't have the aboility to call the person back once they find a proper place to park. :rolleyes:

I’m with you on this one to an extent, but, looking at it from the other person’s viewpoint, you are not really doing them a favour as it is your duty to stop for an obstruction in your lane. I agree tho’, a wee acknowledgement is appreciated. I don’t gat my knickers in a twist when I don’t get one however.

As someone that lives in the countryside and walks a lot, the drivers who do not give you any room when they pass you. There are no footpaths at the side of the road I have to walk on the road, morons!

Have we had when your joining a motorway behind a slow vehicle the car behind you flys over to the overtaking lane so you can’t pull out to pass.

TBH, I've done that because the car in front was dittering long before getting onto the Motorway. Also had it done to me and I didn't like it :grr: (BTW, I wasn't dittering however, the guy who passed me must have thought I was).

Nearly pooped my pants today with what I saw.

Sitting 2nd at a pelican crossing waiting to go (flashing amber)a private hire taxi zoomed down the bus lane and nearly wiped out a crossing blind man and his dog, fair play to to dog for not getting spooked at a minibus slamming on the anchors.

When your sitting first at lights waiting on a filter. It turns green and before you've had time to move a muscle the driver behind blasts his horn.

Many of the things mentioned here are traffic offences albeit minor.

One of my gripes is that even if they are done in plain view of the police the police do nothing. I'm not suggesting drivers, or cyclists, get done every time but a wee word of warning might go a long way to upping the standard of driving overall.

Warning lights that come on your dashboard that indicate somethings wrong but don't tell you how serious.
You find out after a cagey drive to a garage that it's your rear side light or something relatively minor. It happened to me one time while driving my daughter's car. I drove gingerly to a garage and was told it was a faulty bloody sensor. They charged me £100 to fit a new one. :grr:

The Roundabout over the by-pass on the Calder Road is cracking me up just now.

I don't think there's a worse one for people not knowing what lane to be in or cutting across lanes, usually in front of me. :grr::grr:

and I marvel at the lack of accidents if you consider the number of cars that use it.

I try and avoid it at peak times but even mid morning or mid afternoon it can be horrendous, folk just pull out willy nilly, its no wonder theres be loads of smashes there.

Information signs on motorways that inform you about things like low tyre pressure using more fuel then you get to your junction and it's closed for roadworks. Maybe use the signs to inform about important stuff and put the stating the obvious crap on when all is clear and well ahead.

The A6106 and A7 are both Sherriffhall no? Old Craighall is the A1 and B6415 to Monktonhall and Musselburgh.

Away from navigating roundabout and the roads that pass them......

Roasters that park in disabled spaces with no reason to do so. Some dickhead (blue BMW M3 13 plate if you read this) decided to tailgate me all the way through the Jewel Asda car park today then park in the disabled space nearest the door despite their being a whole row of empty spaces literally 3 spaces further up. Jumps out and strolls into the store with the carpets under the arms swagger. So thanks to Mr Selfish an actual disabled person may have had to walk or navigate themselves further because he couldn't be bothered walking about 6 extra steps. I've seen people do it on a Saturday afternoon when there is only 1 disabled space remaining. I wonder if it crosses these peoples minds quite how a wheelchair user is meant to sort themsleves out without the extra space a disabled space affords.

See also folk who park in the pick up and drop off area then disappear into the shop again leaving the potential that an elderly and/or infirm person may have to walk further to meet their taxi or lift.

There really is no excuse for either action.

I hate that and never park in the DSB spaces for convenience. There are some videos of people being pulled up for it by other members of the public but it usually results in a confrontation with abuse being hurled towards the person filming.

People are just too lazy these days and wont walk the length of their noses.

The problem junction on sherrifhall is coming from the road where the cockatoo is/was going towards Bonnyrigg. It doesn’t matter the name of each of the roads but that’s the junction and direction that folk can’t understand.

for anyone that uses Ferry Road the traffic lights at the roadworks wasn't working and everyone was just running red lights.

Last night coming south on the Quensferry Crossing, the speed limit is reduced to 40 and the overtaking lane is unavailable, at least 5 cars came tearing down that lane overtaking the cars in the right lane. It was closed for workers who were operating near the roadway. The drivers are selfish pricks.

I saw on Facebook that the lane signs and overhead gantries were showing different lanes were closed/restricted. But aye it's these guys lives you're slowing down for. When I see a workie I sometimes give them a wee wave!

When I was on the road it was very clear as the gantries weren't at all confusing, though I suppose once I'd passed them they could have changed.

Taxis, especially hackney cabs who avidly stick to the speed limit, 20, 30 ,40mph etc when they have a fare in the back but when they're empty they fly about the place cutting up other motorists, pulling U turns or just suddenly stopping because theres been a sniff of a fare... effin joke man.
