I took the family along to see
some silky skills from Glenn Hoddle and Peter Beardsley and ended up seeing a current and
a former Hibee score a couple of cracking goals in two charity games in aid of Kosovo
refugees. See below for a
report on the Charity matches reproduced from the Reading Internet Fanzine "Hob Nob
Anyone?"

from right. Note Tommy "celticfootballclub" Burns, back row, 1st on left.
"Trevor Senior stared with
two well taken goals in tonights charity match at Madejski Stadium, to raise money for the
Kosovo appeal. The match saw a welcome return of a number of past greats including Senior,
Archie Lovell, Steve Richardson, Stuart Beavon, and Steve Wood. Tommy Burns also played
for the Reading XI, while Steve Mautone made a comeback in goal. There was a fair amount
of style on display from the Celebrity XI which included an impressive Peter Beardsley,
Glenn Hoddle, Neil Webb, and Angus Deayton.

Archie in action
A decent crowd of 2,472 saw Reading overcome the Celebrities 5-4. Reading went two goals
up through Senior and Archie, only to see the Celebrities score four with two from
Beardsley, one from Hoddle, and one from 2-Ten FMs Andy Ashton. An own goal from young
Shaun Allaway set up a late Reading comeback. Senior gave a glipse of exactly what we've
been missing all season, and proved he's still got it after he firmly headed home a corner
from the left, to make it 4-4. A victory was wrapped up in the last minute when ex-Reading
star midfielder, now painter and decorator, Beavon drove home from inside the area. He
certainly deserved the goal after running around like mad for the full hour. It bought
back some great memories to see Beavon, Wood, Richardson, and Trevor "God"
Senior. Trevor scored two great goals but thankfully managed to fall over a couple of
times to complete the picture of how he used to be. Pure hero.
Following on from the first game, a Jockeys XI took on an Ex-Arsenal XI - which saw
Arsenal win 9-2."

Peter Marinello in action

Peter Marinello signing
autographs
I introduced myself to Peter
Marinello and he said that he was keen to come along to future London Hibs functions.
I was sitting next to a Reading
fan who hung his head in his hands when Stuart Lovell was announced to the crowd to huge
cheers. When I asked him why, he reminded me of the First Division play-off Final a couple
of years ago when Reading were 3-1 up, they got a penalty which Archie missed - Reading
went on to lose 4-3! |
