The Great Adventure

by Dave McBain

Little Tommy had been bad. In fact he'd been very bad. All his friends had told him he was bad, but he just couldn't stop himself.

Finally his mum punished him. "You've been a bad boy Tom, you haven't done your schoolwork and when you went to play you were rotten as well - I'm going have to punish you. Until you learn to play nicely, you wont be able to play with your old friends at all".

So Tom was sent to his room. He put on his green and white pyjamas and even though it wasn't his bedtime he was sent to bed.

As he lay there unable to sleep, he noticed a light in his wardrobe. He got out of bed, walked over and opened the door a little and looked inside - there to his amazement was a green grassy slope.

Tom was only little and a wee bit nervous, but he couldn't resist a chance to see the magical world inside his wardrobe, so he stepped inside......and so began the great adventure......

As Tom walked up the slope, the sun came out from behind a cloud and he noticed a path leading off to the west. The path was tangled and covered in weeds, but Tommy was sure he was still in Scotland because he saw someone with a tartan jumper on. Then he came to a scarey place.

There were people here, but not like the people Tom knew. These people were dirty and looked like they'd never ever seen soap. They looked angry too. Tommy really wanted to run away, but then in a puff of white dust his friend big fat Barry appeared and said, "don't worry Tom, they won’t hurt you. They're Morons". With that Barry gave them T and a mars bar.

Tommy left the morons and carried on walking. Soon he came to a school - just like his school except it wasn't. This schoolhouse was coloured red and white like a candy cane. Wow thought Tom, big fat Barry would love it here.

Tom liked school, but he felt he really must get home, so on he walked.

Suddenly Tom was back on the slope leading back to his wardrobe. This time though it was different. There were itsy bitsy insignificant people on it - they were so small just like ants. Being a bad lad, Tom tried to step on them - but they bit him. Not just once, but two big bites. Maybe this adventure wasn't such fun after all.

Tom ran away as fast as his legs could carry him. He ran and he ran until he came to a field full of sheep. There was a grumpy looking shepherd with the sheep who sneered at him as he spoke - "You'll never get back to play with the big boys Tommy". Tommy was upset, so he carried on running.

Would he ever make it home? would this great adventure go on for ever? Would he see dragons and elves and pixies?...........

Probably not, but he would see Stranraer, Ayr, Greenock and Paisley.
