A thoroughly convincing score line
against a team that took us to wire earlier in the season saw Hibs
move to within 2 victories of the championship. On a sunny but
crisp afternoon in Wandsworth, Hibs took control of the game from the
outset and Grant put us ahead inside 10 minutes, competently
finishing following some slack defending. Five minutes later
and it was two as Grant again used his pace to get behind the
defence before rounding the 'keeper and slotting into an empty net.
Hibs were now in complete
control and our passing game was good considering the bumpy
pitch. John dealt comfortably with the couple of occasions
Man United threatened our goal and Gerry V gave us a comfortable 3-0
half time lead, volleying home from 20 yards (with the outside of his
boot - or was it a mis-kick?) after some sublime control.
Kev replaced Leigh at
half-time making a welcome return to the team. Gerry V soon
extended our lead chipping the keeper exquisitely from the corner of
the area. We then took our foot off the pedal and became
sloppy for a while, letting in one goal which could have been more but
for a couple of smart saves from John. This is one area where we need
to improve - concentrating for the full 90 minutes and not just
playing in spells. Our dominance was re-asserted with Grant
completing his hat-trick and then adding a fourth for good measure.
A fifth was put on a plate (cut up and on the fork!) after a flowing
move but somehow he contrived to miss from 5 yards. A last
minute consolation did little other than affect our goal
difference.
All in all another good
performance with some great goals. We got sloppy for a while in
the second half and seemed to be playing with 8 forwards at one stage
but the game had been wrapped up by then. Russell and Kev
made welcome returns.
