Do we stay in pot 2 for future qualifiers?

I think we retain a spot in league A - if thats the lingo. Basically a promotion/relegation playoff. I think.

Remain in League A and it’s likely we’ll be guaranteed a play off spot for Euro 2028 if we don’t qualify through the groups.

The competitive games are a great improvement on what went before. I am enjoying my visits to Hampden and the occasional away game in this nations league campaign, unfortunately the loyalty points didn’t go low enough for me to go on the trip to Greece.

100% I was sceptical of the nations league (and the new UCL) format but both have improved their respective areas.

Really? I was under the impression it was only the group winners (at any level - A, B, C - whatever) that got an automatic play off spot. Certainly that was how Scotland qualified for the Euros Finals in 2021 - we beat Ukraine in a play off after winning our group (in League B I think). That actually had me thinking we may be as well losing this play-off against Greece as we'd have a chance of winning a Group in League B but next to no chance of winning a League A group.

Who said the Euro Nation's League was confusing anyway???

Euros and world cup had different terms for the nations league.

You're right, for world cup. League B is probably better but the last euros (not sure if anything is certain for the next one) league A was better.

I could be totally wrong in this, but the liklehood is that most teams in group A will qualify automatically through the groups so the play off place will 'fall' to the others in Group A, so even if Scotland are 3rd in the group it may be that the place falls to us......i think.

There are only 3 or 4 World Cup playoff spots for the nations league so they go to group winners. Because there are a lot more teams at the Euros than go to the WC the Euros playoffs are entirely made up from the nations league and each league has 4 playoff spots. Since the majority of League A teams will qualify directly then you’re pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot for the euros.

Since the use the Nations League placings to determine the Euro qualifiers seedings for the groups we’d be guaranteed pot 2 minimum by staying in League A

That fits in with what I previously knew and starts to make a bit of sense. There will be 24 qualifiers for the Euros - 12 of whom will be the winners of their qualifying groups and 6 of whom will (presumably) be winners of playoffs between 2nd place teams. That comes to 18 qualifiers and there are 16 sides in the A League groups. You would think most of the A League group winners and runners up would be among that 18 qualifiers and so 3rd place - or even 4th - in A League Groups would be very likely to get one of the remaining play off spots you would think (simples!)

In other words it's just a needlessly confusing 'tournament' layered on to what was previously a straightforward process. There are too many international games getting in the way of club fixtures as it is and we should just go back to focusing on straightforward qualifying groups with the odd warm-up friendly thrown in.

That's how it worked for the euros but not for the upcoming world cup. If Group A winners all qualify then it goes to Group B, then C, etc.

There were set dates and amounts of games for friendlies that had to be played. The Nations league has taken away the need for friendlies with competitive games. It is far better than the previous way of international football

Hope Lewis Ferguson does well. Never really managed to force his way in to the Scotland team but he’s done so well in Italy and will probably get a move this summer.

Would be good to see Max Johnston get on as well. Playing regularly for Sturm Graz who are top of the league and started a number of games in the Champions League for them. Got to be a better option than Ralston.

My understanding for WC qualifying was that the play off spots were reserved purely for group winners so we would miss out at the expense of say Macedonia.

Happy to be wrong on this one though if it means winning this tie gives us an extra opportunity to qualify for the next major

Not just playing in Serie A, doing very well.

Then you have the Liverpool left back and the Aston Villa captain. It’s just that the drop off the the likes of Ralston is huge.

Is there no other central defenders who qualify for us, Hanley is ok, but if we had another good centre half who actually marks his man on the right side, and was comfortable on the ball, we would look much more solid?

Midfield looks very good tonight, every player looking comfortable and creating too.

We dont half look a decent side now, Clarke should be praised to the hilt with what he's building, with some good and some very average players. :top marks

2 sides of Scotland tonight, both positive. Front foot in the first half, fluid play, looked dangerous, and wouldn’t have been flattered by scoring a couple more. Porteous is so very nearly an excellent player - and in a position where we're crying out for quality.

His problems seem avoidable and unnecessary and you'd have to think that if he's still making the same mistakes now then he always will.

To be fair to him - for a very long time he was calm and safe for Scotland but his club side rashness seems to have crept in there too.

Such a frustrating player.
