Put the radio on when I turned the TV off and right on que - Richard Gordon, Willie Miller & Leanne Crichton putting the but in. It was daft to go in like that in his first tackle, the second one was a dive. If he hasn’t learnt now I’m not sure he ever will.
Shame because up until that Germany tackle, he didn’t look out of place at all in international football - infact he excelled in some games! Didn’t get the praise he deserved during that run and it didn’t take long for the media to turn on him. Unfortunately he just doesn’t help himself and I’m not sure we’ll see him starting again any time soon.

Porto’s Scotland debut away to a very good Ukraine side in a 0-0 draw was absolutely flawless I was proud of him his only Scotland cap as a Hibernian player
What made it even more pleasing was the fact that Michael Stewart reminded anyone that would listen that Ryan Porteous had a ‘ mistake’ in him and catastrophe was just around the corner
Thought he was doing ok for Scotland up until Haaland conned the Referee with an obvious dive in Norway after that opposition forwards would target him and fall over at the slightest touch or tackle

This. Gonna add If he hadn't challenged for the ball in Germany and they tapped in an easy goal he'd have been pilloried for that instead. Germany were never losing that game they were all over us from kick off. First challenge last night wasn't even a foul, won the ball

Great result and clearly Greece are half decent think we will get through Sunday. Don’t think they will be as good away from home though no doubt their main striker will start. Defend well and longer the game goes the more they will need to open up and we will punish them.

I wouldn’t have Porteous in a Scotland shirt for some time. He’s not learning.
Great win.
:agree:
I know it’s probably not something that will go down well on here but I really don’t like Porteous and tbh, I didn’t like him when he was here. He’s a needlessly dirty ******* who regularly goes out to try and hurt other players. I’m always surprised that folk still stick up for some of his horrific attempts at tackles that lead to sending offs at Hibs when you see what he’s still getting up to now. They were terrible tackles then and he persists in making similar now.

Porteus seems unable or unwilling to fix that side of his game. He's already dropped down a level with the loan to Preston; he needs to fix it and fast.
Clarke's going to just stop picking him if he can't be relied on to defend a lead in crucial games.

I don't watch international football so can't comment on his performances for Scotland, but I don't recall him making any 'terrible' tackles at Hibs. Sent off at Ibrox I recall but it was Gerrard who turned that into a witch hunt when there was zero malice in it.

It's great that the coverage of the national team is on our national channel, very refreshing.
I don't know.
I found it all a bit bias. All the commentators and pundits clearly had a pro Scotland agenda. This was typified by them laughing at HT that they didn't even care if it was a penalty. No thought to poor Greece and the fact such a decision could cost them a place in the top tier of the Nation's League. There was no Greek voice at all among all the Scots and the referencing back to the fact we qualified for a major tournament recently and have ambitions to do so again was tedious.
The BBC is supposed to be impartial and there was clearly no thought given to the fact that people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland may have been watching and might have been sensitive to such explicit pro Scotland bias.
That's the standards we set out for the BBC when Scotland aren't involved so we should be holding them to the same when it's us imo:wink:

Greece are clearly good. I think our World Cup qualification group will be the most exciting for a neural.
Sucks to be Belarus but 1st - 3rd is by far the least predictable from all the groups.
Mighty stymie things a bit if Portugal dont overcome Denmark on Sunday though and drop into our group ?

Agreed. That tackle v Germany was crazy. I do actually remember him doing a great last min tackle in the box for Scotland v someone when we were 1 goal ahead and he timed it perfectly. But it's easy to get these things wrong and risky.

36 yellows and 4 reds in 157 appearances
His straight red for a cynical challenge in the closing stages of the LC Quarter Final at Killie was to say the least premeditated just deliberately booted the boy up in the air Dearie me ! I also remember a sissor like motion in a badly timed tackle against the Hun in 0-3 at ER left the Ref with no option His tackle on Aribo at Ibrox looked harsh won the ball but rashly launched himself a good way out with studs raised giving the Ref the easy option Also a rash tackle conceding a pen at Pittodrie in a 1-3 defeat I think straight red
The thing for me was he didn’t seem to learn from his mistakes kept doing the same thing usually rash tackles or trying to be too clever getting caught in possession falling on the ball claiming a foul and blaming everyone but himself
Thing is I liked him you could see the potential that was the frustrating thing he had everything was one of our own you could see his desire to win the League Cup but never seemed to move to the next level might have done with staying with us a wee bit longer but some might say he was hounded out of Scotland by the likes of Slippy G Goodwin and the Refs who made him a marked man
Hope he can turn his career around at Preston

No it is just one tie against Greece for us to stay in League A of the Nations League.
The winners of the 12 traditional qualification groups (of which Greece are in our group - coincidence we've drawn them there too) qualify direct for the World Cup.
There's then 4 other teams that qualify. The 12 qualification group runners up plus the 4 best Nations League group winners that haven't finished in the top two of their qualifying groups then go into a play-off which consists of two rounds of single leg play-offs (seeded team at home for the first round, home teams drawn for the second round).
We basically have to finish in the top two of our group to stand a chance of qualifying for the World Cup.
It is the Euros where the Nations League offers a semi-decent chance of qualifying for a tournament. The next Euros will be complicated as we are one of the hosts but there are more hosts than host places. I don't think they've decided what to do but there was some chat that they'd make all of us do the qualifying and use performance from the qualifying to decide which host teams that don't qualify by other means get the host spots. No idea what happens to those spots if we all qualify.

He made numerous terrible tackles at Hibs.
His tackle on Aribo at Ibrox was an absolute horror tackle yet people can’t take off the green tinted specs and see that. If he’d caught Aribo he could have ended his career such was the force and height in it. He went over the ball and running at absolute full pelt. It was a shocker. The idea there was no malice in it is miles off it.
His other red against Rangers was another blatant attempt at maiming a player. You can see by the way he adjusts his feet that he’s making sure he nails Lundstram.
His tackle at the euros was an absolute shocker and one of the worst tackles you’re likely to see in football these days. Gundogan was lucky to escape without a broken leg.
And those are just ones he was sent off for. There would have been plenty others.

Who cares, it was against huns? Scott Allan and Darren McGregor have done just as bad tackles, one against huns and the other numerous tackles that should have resulted in sending offs. I cared when we were 1-0 up at Ibrox and he made that ridiculous tackle on Aribo leaving us with an hour to play with 10 men, ultimately ending in a 2-1 defeat. The guy is an idiot.
Scott Allan’s tackle on Rossiter was indeed a shocker. It was out of character for him though where as Porteous’ idiocy is absolutely part of his character.
As for McGregor, he got one straight red card in his entire career and significantly less yellows than Ryan Porteous already has despite him playing significantly less games than Daz. Daz was nothing like Porteous.

:agree: Absolute proof that VAR Refs at international level are just as massive eejits as in the SPL.
McTominay touches the ball with his left foot before planting same foot on the defender's foot - which leads to them both tumbling to the ground. A "coming together" for sure but no foul from either player and should have been a case of play on.
Take it for sure though - nice when a bit of luck falls our way and hope that continues on Sunday!

But it wasn't. Scotland could and really should have been 2 or 3 up at HT having dominated the first half and missed a couple gilt edged chances. The Greeks were a mess at the back. Despite their dominance of the ball 2nd half, Greece created few clear cut chances. In fact can only think of 1 when they hit the post, and that was good defending by Scotland. The "penalty" they thought they had was outside the box. So where was their smash and grab ? How many saves to Gordon make in the whole match ?
Scotland and Hibs have been the victims of plenty smash and grabs over the years, so we know what that looks and feels like. Last night was miles from that. Scotland played the perfect away game.

No, it’s really not. The majority of them were absolutely not nothing fouls. I’ve listed 3 tackles there. The Aribo one was with a ridiculous amount of force and he went over the top of the ball and the Gundogan one was an absolutely atrocious tackle. Sure I was very negative towards Heckingbottom with the team selection on here in matchday thread. Not one of my finest moments. :greengrin

Absolutely spot on here. Some folk have a really bizarre dislike for Porteous.
Assume due to him being public enemy #1 in the media, as he was a good player for us who wore his heart on his sleeve.
I can't lie, ive always seen it as the opposite. No doubting his talent but a big chunk of our fanbase will defend him regardless because he's a local lad that played for us. Whether it's dirty or rashness I don't think there's a logical argument he doesn't have that side to him.

Its simple as far as im concerned.
Did Porteous get unfairly scapegoated publicly by opposing managers and pundits? YES.
Did he often deserve it as well for rash rackles, stupid dives and not managing to even be sly about it? YES.
I went through to Paisley for an away fixture a few seasons back, ive never been convinced before that a Hibs player had stopped trying before that but i was that day. Im fairly sure on a couple of occasions he misplaced passes by accident at the end of a game we were losing. All the talent in the world-the Ukraine game attests to that-but he’s a liability way too often.

Opposition Managers loved it and used it and the media to play mind games and put Porto on the radar of the Referee and increase the pressure to reach for a card I firmly believe some bookings he picked up were in the soft category as a consequence of this
I also feel that when Porto left he was nowhere near the finished article still rough around the edges and his decision making wasn’t great still doing rash stuff probably thought he was better than he actually was
I remember in his last game 0-3 against Hearts in the Scottish Cup he was trying to shepherd the ball out for a throw in allowed Ginelli to get ball side and ended up hauling him down conceding a free kick from which they scored a rookie mistake
Tin hat on here but I feel Rocky is now showing the level of calmness composure and confidence in his play -although there might still be a mistake in him - having made all his mistakes in a Hibs jersey
Celtic home he was outstanding handled Maeda well apart from the goal will be surprised if he is still here in August hope I am wrong

Sadly the day of the tackle is well gone. I do think football is too soft these days but someone should tell Ryan that (and that there are var cams all over the place).
I don't think VAR would have called the Aribo tackle a red. He's clean across the front of the player, and doesn't make contact until Aribo's foot hits his hip.
The worst tackle in that match was by Lundstram on Doig - a high boot from the side, off his feet, could have done real damage. Not even booked. Would be a red every time with VAR now, even for them.

Was var not around at that point? I thought Var has been here since 2018
