No idea why it has to be one or the other. I played Rugby and Football into adulthood and cricket and basketball among others for school teams and also afterwards for the odd game. I'd agree with many of the posts here. The majority of football and rugby fans are the same in terms of behaviour. The bad behaviour is a minority and is very much treated differently by the police. The policing of rugby and football before any issues arise is completely different too. It is almost as if the Police are looking for a fight at big football matches. That being said they would say they were preparing for the worst.

I love football, it's the best sport in the world but the simple difference is you do not get self identified groups of rugby supporters who band together in large numbers looking to fight with opposing fanbases.
This isn't about your average fan, it's these groups of numbers up to and over 100 young men dressing up with balaclavas on looking to cause trouble at times. I've never once heard of that happening at a Rugby game.

I know there is an element of tongue in cheek involved in the whole rugby chat but I genuinely think there is minimal difference between you average football and rugby fan. Not the extreme elements in either sport which take different forms but definitely exist.
You could easily allow beer at the football and have a whole unsegregated family section and there would be no notable change in the behaviour of most fans. The vast majority of games from League One and below in Scotland are unsegregated and there are no running battles, same as there are huge unsegregated sections and alcohol served at major international tournaments with no issues.
The issue for me is the 'most fans' because you are right but that''s also the problem: I happen to have been to a lot of Scottish games at Murrayfield in the past 3/4 years & taken football friends who were initially very agitated by the fact that we could drink at the games; a Celtic season ticket holder in particular due to his politics (which I entirely agree with) was no' happy. Bottom line is that he accepted that he knew and saw too many of his team's supporters who would not drink responsibly and not the way rugby fans were behaving would translate well to Parkhead.. It's a minority but I've also seen too many drunks at ER over the years to believe there would not be trouble - it's a minority, most folk would be fine but that minority would make life grim for everyone around them. It's a cultural thing and I don't like what it says about our society but it's a consequence that I don't think there's any point denying.

Rugby's actually a harder game to excel at than football.
By what method is this measured?
Since90+2

By what method is this measured?
Football is a far harder game to excel at. It's a numbers game, football is played by a massive number of people compared to Rugby across the world, to become a professional footballer you are competing against millions upon millions of others who want to make it to that level.
Very very few do.
In Rugby the number of players is far lower so your chances of success are higher as you are competing against a much smaller talent pool.

They can make all the statements they want but whether they have a point or not is largely irrelevant.
The police have a duty to protect the public be that in the streets or in the stadiums so they will continue to try to nip any bad behaviour in the bud.
Why are they wearing face coverings? Exactly!

I'm referring to the demands of the game not the number playing it.
Both rugby and football are well down the list of most demanding sports (across numerous measures) though, most of which are individual eg gymnastics is well out in front (followed by boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) and fencing, although the latter is often inclded as a MMA), with ice hockey the most demanding team sport.

Rugby fans don't express any where near the passion that football fans have for their club.
It's a completely different thing, rugby crowds are more akin to a theatre crowd than football so it's no surprise that football attracts folk that are a bit more troublesome

It might be more physically demanding, but that doesn't make it harder to excel, it just makes it more physical.
The level of skill and technique in football compared to Rugby for instance are miles apart.

The measures are more than just physical, although strength and conditioning have played a far bigger role in rugby since the advent of professionalism.
Skill, stamina and tactical awareness are among the numerous other measures. I recall seeing Michael O'Neill giving a talk (possibly at the Sheffield Institute of Sport) where he pointed out that the average footballer is capable of absorbing no more than three minutes of tactical instruction. Any more and you've lost them as a manager. You get exceptions obviously like Alan 'all yer brains are in yer effin head' Gordon but football's popularity is largely down to its inherent simplicity compared to many other sports.
Easy to underrate the skill and technique of elite rugby players. Check out Antoine Dupont or Finn Russell. Absolute wizards.

Thought this was about our current ultra incarnation
That statement reeks of entitlement. Entitled to do what they want because “ultras scene”
If they want to start by cleaning up their minging mess on the graveyard walls where our own Dan McMichael lies in state, that might be good…then show a bit of respect to fellow fans at away games. Maybe not forcing folks from their seats? Or all the other selfish stuff that has gone on over recent years. As others have said, I’m sick of being “treated badly” at Pittodrie or Motherwell or Tynecastle because they have put targets on all our backs. Not us, them.
As for thinking any innocent intentions involve wearing a balaclava for any reason in everyday life is normal or that it is not something that makes other members of society feel uncomfortable, well…
Over to Statement UHs to remove so many of the reasons Polis Alba have been put in this situation…

In a perfect world we would be allowed booze at the footy and the minority who want to cause trouble would be dealt with by the authorities, the issue isn;t so much the fans more the Police's inability to be able to deal with any trouble.

I think all the ultras groups just sing variations on the same songs.
There was a squad of Dundee fans in the pub around us pre match and it sounded like they were singing Hibs songs. That one you mention but with something about Simon Murray dropped in, 'super Trevor Carson in goal', Discolands etc etc
GGTTH getting a fully airing every week is a more than decent trade off though imo.

It's not an "absolutely brilliant effort" from the steward, it's ridiculous behaviour. Stewards are there to try and keep the peace, if they can't do that they should desculate and if the situation gets out with their control leave it to Police officers.
Stewards throwing hooks left right and centre at fans is not something we want to see (well atleast I don't).

Will it though? They do this at least a few times every season and radio silence from the club. You can bet even if someone had a quiet word with them it wouldn't stay behind closed doors for long; they'd turn it into one of their pathetic wee statements.
Their away game privileges should be canned, NOW. How ****ing dare the club give the plum seats to these spoiled little brats ahead of people who actually ****ing deserve it? It's beyond a joke.

What's actually going on in that video? Is that before or after the game? If it's after where are they trying to go? If it's before why are the polis stopping them going down the stairs?
Not a lot of context to go on.
I was out the back after the game and they all started sprinting back in to pretend to have a fight.

How the hell did we get to a situation where a group of trouble-making youngsters are holding the club to ransom, it seems, over ticket allocations, seating arrangements and what they can/can't bring into a stadium?
Would me and my mates be afforded this luxury?
Also, why the **** are the cops just stood there watching it develop instead of lifting these clowns and getting them in a cell for the night.
I really hope this is the final nail in their coffin, but I've doubts that we'll hear anything from the club on the matter.

The line is often given that they are, but the limited ticketing for this game exposed some discrepancies.
Hibs First taking a full allocation (at the very most) out of the 790 available seats and what was left for ST holders to buy didn’t add up.
Yes, there are some comps, but not that many surely. I think we know where a good chunk of the set aside tickets went along with a designated section within the stand.
I don’t think we need any more answers from the club.

Why did a crowd of them run out of the stand attempting to gain access to section R (Aberdeen end) prior to this incident?
I witnessed the above with my own eyes and their intent was to cause trouble, nothing else.
Everywhere they go, trouble follows, yet we still have apologists trying to explain away these incidents.
Nobody else yesterday had any issue with the stewards/police at the ground, only these clowns.

I was sitting in the seat nearest the red segregation rope. The area below was pelted by missiles from the nearest few rows of the Aberdeen support, there was 13 rows between us

I didn’t see the Tifo as I sit above them but why do the guys who bring the banner up to the top tier need to wear full face masks?
One was asked to remove it three times by a steward so I’m assuming they are banned but he just pushed past him each time and ignored him, very odd behaviour.

Enjoyed the display, and the bit of comedy with one half of banner upside down and the struggle to get it round right way before realising they had to swap sides or it was never going to work! All looked good in the end.

Who were the group dressed as chickens in the south stand. The boy with KFC on the front of his outfit was enjoying winding up the United fans after our first goal.

I'm intrigued how you know how I feel personally, I doubt you understand how fans who go to away games have been affected when they, their children or friends are bundled out their seats by entitled fellow fans.
It's mentioned by people who were actually affected by it on this very site.
When I go to Hibs games I tend to let fellow fans sit in the seats they've chosen and paid for, but maybe that's just me.

Can only take from what you've posted but you seem to have a personal gripe with a group of laddies having fun at the football.
How would you know to doubt I would understand? I go to plenty away games and no really bothered where I sit at the best of time, especially being in my 40s now and been home and away since the times of not getting a ticket or a seat and just sitting where you want.
There you go with "bullied" but you've nothing personal against them you're just playing the concerned citizen for others? Aye sound.
Did anyone get hurt or did it ruin the day for anyone that's had to different seat at a football match? I would get it if it was on a plane or even a train (that wouldnt bother me either), but getting offended for others but you don't have anything against the group bar that and flags or what they wear? Lol.

I think forcing people out their seats by your presence and/or weight of numbers when they don't necessarily want to go comfortably fits with bullying, you used the bullied term not me, but if you have a more palatable term for it, crack on.

And I've seen loads of fans over the years, especially younger fans out on the piss sit in big groups not really considering others around them. It's never been the highest offence of the year. Perhaps it's down to people moaning who when younger didn't go to games with their mates when they had tickets and designated seats like myself so just sat where you want depending on when you get into the ground.
Fact of the matter the younger generation of block seven and others are the future support of the club, they will grow up, have families and hopefully still support the club as much as they can and put money into the club just as they are doing now. They are no different to many others across the whole of the UK/Europe or much different to many other groups of younger Hibs fans from the past. They are hardly smashing up places we visit or robbing old grannies.

You're fighting a losing battle if you think challenging what is already established evidence from multiple away fans is going to make people forget what they've seen with their own eyes. Tell your fellow ultras to stop doing it and we'll stop saying it. You can't have it both ways.

That's the first ground the stewards have intervened and weren't backing down. Them marching down from their allocated space en masse, like the Star Wars stormtroopers March and trying to oust the fans behind the goals at the front- only for too many folk including the stewards telling them to bolt was entertaining in itself. 🤭

What about a St George cross or a Union Jack (red white and blue not the green and black one).
I really couldn't give a toss about flags. Can't say I noticed the Vatican flag. But then, couldn't even tell you what it looks like.
Absolutely fine. As m59 says, if they aren’t targeting anyone for abuse then what’s the problem, they are just flags.
I think it’s sad that some would be uncomfortable seeing a St George’s cross in honour of an English player given how many English players have contributed to the recent successes of our clubs. Fans lapped up seeing Benji and Zemamma celebrating with their national flags in 2007 but would baulk at the idea of Hogg and Jones doing the same.

I go to football to watch a game of football in the seat I paid for, not to be hassled by coked up neds, share the tiny space each fan is given with someone else, or to stare at their backs.

There are a number of posters on here who have shared (going back a few years now) that B7 members have approached them already in their seats and threatened/intimidated them to get them to move, including posters with young children there. There’s also posters who have described their long term away match attending relatives have stopped going to away matches because of the behaviour of B7 members.

Was going back two or three years, right enough, but group I was in at Ross County got bounced out of our seats by a wave of wild-eyed ultras. And, yes, bairn in our group was crying. I've made a point since to book tickets away from where B7 are. Initially it was guessing where they might be. Fortunately now the club give us a warning.
Edit: and we were in our seats before B7 arrived. A bit like the semi at Parkhead, a couple of the crew appeared in the area where we were about 15 mins before KO to scope it out before the gang came in.

Some of the spray paint ended up as graffiti - I thought their tifo was terrific and, inside the stadium they played their part in a great atmosphere at the game.
As I've said before, though - they go straight on to social media and post images of vandalism, not for the first time, at the same time as asking people to fund it. It's two steps forward and one step back every time they do things like this.
There's loads of things that you can give Block Seven credit for, and they should get that credit. They're in a position where they could be an overwhelmingly positive force for good at the club, but for as long as they indulge in all the other stuff covered in this thread and others, the credit will always be caveated with a "but...".
I really want to be a big advocate for Block Seven, we will share the good things on social media from the podcast accounts but it's really difficult to get properly behind them while that "but" exists.

That's all and well. You claimed twice to be intimidated and told to move out your seat that you had a ticket for. You lied to try and prove some point about the big bad block seven guys. Cheers.
What would have been your suggestion for that situation?
“Excuse me, dozens of people off their heads, I can’t help but notice you’re in all of our seats we were sat in seconds ago. We now can’t see and are pinned in. Would you carefully move moving?”
Do you think that’d work? Do you not think some of us tried and failed or were met by rudeness in return? Or do you think we should have stayed and had the view that was the grand total of a bunch of peoples backs who were stood on the chairs in front?
Just checking as thinking that all of that isn’t being forced out of your seat is a little baffling.

You have seen block seven members go up to someone in their seat and force them out of it aye?
Its been reported at just about every away game this season. Open your eyes man. The behaviour has been unacceptable on multiple occasions throughout the season. But I guess we were all young once which gave us a free licence to act like entitled erseholes.

Are they not all about 13/14 years old? Bit young to be smashing coke.
No, they're definitely not.

As much as I don’t like them that just hasn’t happened for months now. Start of the season I agree however quickly rectified by the group and the club however annoying it was.
It’s a societal issue in the main and not one just linked to our section but to the majority.
If they’d stick to displays and singing they’d get all our support.
