:agree: we let them have the ball cos we knew they’d do nothing with it. Pretty much how teams lined up against us last season.
Exactly, we were crap at playing out from the back, with Newell playing centre half most weeks, we were easy to close down and had no urgency getting forward.
Teams could defend against us easily by just sauntering back into shape when they lost the ball, as we'd be farting about at the back passing it between themselves for 5 minutes before usually launching it as a last resort because we'd run out of ideas.

Different subject but tip of the hat to you for your contribution on the BBC and your barbs aimed at the commentators for their nonsense and repeated comments about Rocky - enjoyed reding that... :aok::top marks

Perhaps one day we will have better players. Until then we should just stick with this style.

I think one of the issues is that the better players to make it work in this league are 10x the cost. Celtic can do it because they sign £10m players in every role to make it happen. We can have the odd player capable of doing it but they're usually playing with players who are about the average level of this league, that's where you get let down.

The annoying thing is what they are being asked to do isn't difficult. It's like the ability of footballers is going back wards. You now need a 10m CB is you want one that can pass under pressure. :greengrin

It was difficult enough for them, when they would pass the ball around between themselves at the back, then as soon as they tried to push forward and were put under pressure they either panicked and launched it long, or kept passing it backwards until we lost it. Obviously on the odd occasion we'd do it well, but in the norm we were pish at it and struggled to keep the ball out our net.so much so this season we were bottom of the league.

Of course it’s difficult or else you wouldn’t need £10m footballers to do it.
The easiest thing to do in football is just launch the ball whatever way you’re facing. It takes a hell of a lot more ability to knock it about, take the ball in under pressure etc than it does to play the percentages and punt the ball into what you deem dangerous areas and play for scraps.

Montgomery was a total flop, anything else is revisionism at it's worst.
He inherited a side in not a bad position. We had finished 5th in the league the season before and had a couple of cracking European results under our belt, admittedly contrasted by some less than stellar league performances. He started out ok but made us progressively worse as the season wore on. Even when he finally changed the shape it didn't spark any improvement in the way it did for Gray.
It's impossible to say there was no chance he'd have improved us if he was given this season but there is no evidence that he was improving us or on the verge of doing so in the time he was here. He had all but the first 3 league games to show he had a clue and we got worse in the time period he was here. Gray can point to tangible evidence he adapted, grew and improved us. Montgomery couldn't give a single example of anything he improved about us.
I felt for the guy, even at the end. He'd clearly worked hard to establish his reputation in Australia and I remember Jason Cummings saying he'd changed his life. I don't have any issues with him as I think he tried his utmost but was found badly wanting in a tougher league.
I'm assuming his family have pretty much settled in the UK by now but I did wonder if they wished Monty had just kept working down under.

The way Valakari had St Johnstone playing on Saturday was an example of this.
Repeatedly trying to play out of their six yard box whilst in trouble and passing up numerous opportunities to just lump the ball clear of danger.
It was obvious Hibs were on to it from the first 5/10 minutes.
Utter stupidity and a reflection of the numerous poor coaches trying to mimic Guardiola etc.
Aye, sooner folk ditch that eejit's philosophy the better. He's spent about 600 million pounds on right backs at his time at city alone, your not winning games of football trying to play it out from the back with guys who have been brought in from the Danish 2nd division.
Plus it's extremely boring, every time I watch city they just looks soulless, don't get me wrong his Barcelona team was unbelievable and the football then was excellent, but he's gone so far from that over the years its now painful to watch.
