Exactly - things are going well.
The league table is looking good.
Standards are high - everyone is leading and setting an example from the front..
I hope more players are out having drinks and more staff at the club taking holidays.
Easter Road should be empty and East Mains closed.

Talk about vague news. Maybe he went out at some undetermined point in the past and did what?
It's getting silly now, criticise his performances by all means but some of the stuff on here looks like putting the boot in with to nothing back it up.
Think week before the derby was mention of Joe being out in Shanghai whatever that is.

1 week out before the derby is hardly a crime, again though its all hearsay with no evidence to suggest anything untoward happening. I just feel that a few on here dislike Joe and will use any excuse to criticise him.
Fair enough he isnt everyones cup of tea, not mines either by the way but I just think a lot of the stuff about what he does in his own time is a bit desperate and I suspect the issue is more to do with Joes performances on the pitch rather than his performances off the pitch so he appears to be fair game for a few mouths on here.
If the club was performing well at all levels and not the basket case it currently is then there would hardly be a peep about what he and others do in their own time.

I get it but if it is a trend when team struggling and under performing personally not a great look or something that is going to aid performance. That would have been the day he stupidly got sent off and blew it from winning position. It’s not the Dog and Duck he is playing for though recent comparisons might be close with Hibs. He is meant to be a top athlete.

Attitudes like this from the players are partly why we’re in the position we’re in imo.
He’s not broken any club rules, so it’s fine. It’s an attitude of being willing to do the bare minimum. He doesn’t look fit enough, his tired touch and lunge against Dundee United cost us 3 points. Drinking contributes negatively to fitness. But it’s fine, he’s done the bare minimum and not broke the club rules, we can’t possibly expect any more from the club captain.

I cannot be the only cynic in here that finds it incredible that one of the biggest critics of Newell and all things Hibs just happened to be in the same pub as him on Sunday, close enough to not only see what he was drinking but also to hear about him planning the sort of session that will impact his whole season. And if we disagree we are accepting mediocrity, surely the most overused and meaningless statement on here.
You have made your point, so why keep banging on about it, the majority seem to disagree. As I say the negativity around people like Newell at the moment is relentless, I get why people are angry, he could and should be doing better, but hounding him out at the moment or complete nonsense is not what we need right now.
What's most funny/ironic is everyone goes on about how great Edinburgh is as a city so should attract players over Dundee/Edinburgh, but scream like banshee's when players are actually seen enjoying it. Obviously thinking is any underperforming players, which is all of them currently, should be locked in studio flats in Ormiston and only allowed out for training and playing. It's complete bonkers on here at moment.

I'm getting sick to death of our failings in general. Newell has to take some criticism with being captain. The last captain I felt could truly inspire his teammates is our current manager.

One of the biggest critics of Newell? if anything I’ve backed him more than a huge chunk of our fans. Go to the other Newell thread you’re posting on and you’ll see that instead of making stuff up.
You can think I didn’t see him all you want. I really do not care if that’s what you think. And I’m not sure how big you think the pubs in Stockbridge are if you think you’d be too far away to see a person and their pint.
What part of the post is nonsense? Was he out? Yes. Does he and the rest of the team, generally look unfit? Yes. Did he get sent off late in a game after taking a tired touch and making a tired lunge to try and rectify that? Yes. Does drinking impact your fitness? Yes. Do we have a ridiculous knack as a team if throwing away goals late in games which absolutely suggests a lack of fitness? Yes. Is he club captain? Yes
You might not like it, that doesn’t make any of it nonsense though.

I think the role of captains are massively over egged on this board. People seem to think Captains are some sort of Roman General type figure ready to inspire his troops into battle for glory or give us death. It's such an archaic mentality of a captain and it's all bordering on meaningless at times. You can go country to country and get a different interpretation of what a captain is some pick the best player, some pick the most experienced, some pick whoever has a good standing in the dressing room regardless, and some clubs just vote on their captain.
The conversation about Newell as captain frankly bores me as much as it did when Hanlon had it and got the same criticisms. Just focus on signing better players than the ones we have and we'll improve regardless of who wears a piece of material on his arm or who runs the players whatsapp group.
When I started this thread I wasn’t expecting it to go in direction of discussing Newell having pints 😂
Back to my original post though, I just feel it is time to move him on or be demoted to bench. He isn’t the answer and never has been and I just don’t see Hibs ever being good with guys like Newell being regulars.
I just don’t understand why ever manager plays him every week.
I won't bother to start at the beginning of this thread or read any other posts, the title is bad enough. What is abysmal is this thread.

Was he out ? Yes ,probably due to the club not having a problem with it as our next game was almost to weeks away from his Sunday afternoon out! Don’t forget at clubs now there’s all sorts of stuff from trainers , dieticians, sports science etc etc … so i don’t know why a player having a Sunday of normality is such a big deal … maybe the guys doing double training sessions , lots of gym work since then and yet his attitude is now getting questioned when we don’t know the facts but are quite happy to jump in , in having a go …
We can question some of the team’s performances though are they generally looking unfit ?… thought in the Dundee Utd home game after going down to ten men we were the team putting the effort in trying win it , there’s been a few others too …
I don’t even know if his touch and lunge was tired which your suggesting or just clumsy and a mistake…
Yeah , drinking does impact on fitness though again it’s two weeks away from our next game and it isn’t like he’s doing it the night before a game …
I don’t know if us losing late goals is down to a lack of fitness or just individual players making bad mistakes which hasn’t anything to do with fitness…. I would imagine confidence and morale is probably low though ( hope they don’t come on here😳)
I’m no Newell or Kensell fan though having a go at one for a Sunday off and the other for going on a family holiday really does seem to be taking things a bit far IMO …
I know things are bad and we are in a pickle though there’s enough folk outside the club to put the boot in without fans looking for daft reasons to do it too … not having a go though we need to stick together and get behind the team as much as that’s hard to do in our current situation 👍

Couldn't agree more - and it lends itself to easy scapegoating.
I thought Newell let us down badly up at Tannadice and I think it's fair game to question his ability at times - but out of everyone in our squad he remains one of the closest to having the ability and character we need. He's one of few to play in a decent Hibs team, remember.
The biggest problem we have is that we have so few leaders and potential captains. When the going gets tough we want our big players, our big communicators, our big characters to visibly rise to the challenge. Either ours don't do it or they don't exist.
Good Hibs teams of the past have had 7 or 8 players who had captain stuff about them. This one has none of it, therefore the blame all gets predictably piled on our incumbent Tennents drinker. It's ridiculous.

Agreed.
Some of the views around alcohol being a no go area for a footballer are also so unrealistic and wide of the mark. Midweek between the 14 October 2000 (when we beat Rangers 1-0 at Easter Road) and the 22 October 2000 (when we beat Hearts 6-2) a few of us bumped into a large group of Hibs players in Eros/Elite nightclub. Mixu, Matty Jack and Latapy were all there downing drinks, and 2 out of the three of them were smoking. I asked Matty Jack how he was feeling about the Hearts game and he said don't you worry we will win.:cb That's three vital players from probably the most talented Hibs team there has been since the 1970s - all loved a bevvy. I once even saw Mixu spew up on the Candy Bar floor on a Hibs team night out:tee hee:
Ok that was a few years ago now, but since then some of our best players have enjoyed a drink routinely,e.g. Riordan, O'Connor, Sproule, Griffiths, Boyle.
There are pictures all over the internet of top players drunk out their mind, Scott Brown, Grealish, Messi, Ronaldinho etc. Its not that big a deal for many pros in terms of impacting performances on a match day. Also who knows what they drink at home out of the public eye. Remember Doidge getting spotted with red wine in his basket in a supermarket during his early barren days and getting absolutely vilified for it. All forgotten about when he started scoring.
Players are human, many will want to drink and many will do so to help unwind. It probably helps some players to ensure they are in a good place mentally for upcoming games. Things obviously aren't going well just now but slamming Newell for having a few pints when there isn't a game for a few weeks is peak Hibs.net hysteria.
Also more generally the questioning of Newell's character and some of the slurs he is getting are pretty sad. Just over 12 months ago he was leading the forefront of the celebrations on the pitch in Luzern, with the whole away end chanting his name. We spoke to his other half in a pub in Luzern later that night and she told us how much Hibs meant to him and that having the fans chant his name was unbelievable for him, particularly with the criticism he got when he first arrived. His recent performances along with the rest of the team don't warrant any praise just now, but anyone thinking he doesn't care is way off the mark.

No need to update this thread. It’s been known for years that when we need so someone to stand up and be counted, Newell is not the man for it. He hides under pressure, isn’t actually good anyway and is a total *****bag.
But our fanbase is so beat down that he’s counted as an footballer.

Physically unfit, slow, no surprise at the booking as it’s that stage in games he’s struggling, needs four touches when one will do, safe passing, zero creativity and no leadership - that’s the captain of our wonderful football club.
New manager simply has to get him away in January - has to be high on the ‘to do’ list for the new manager.

Absolutely pish yet again. It’s absolutely no problem that he’s out on the booze though, he doesn’t really have much he needs to work on or that.
