Got to remember that every player has their stats available and so a 'loans manager' can see the stats and whether that's a good performance for the team that they are in e.g.

If you can tell me how many games David Marshall (Loans Manager) has been to I might change my mind on him.
That's such a strange attitude. So if someone doesn't prove to you exactly what they do all day - you presume they do nothing ?
What do you do all day ?

I don't think it is a bad idea for the club let fans know what new roles added to the clubs staff do?
David Marshall is "Technical performance director" we have never had one so what do they do ? I remember from one of Malky Mckays interviews that part of Marshals role was dealing with the loan players.
So think its a fair question for fans to ask the question and find out from the club how the players are developing.
I agree there is loads of data available now for people to look at however shall I start a list now over the last 4 seasons the data driven/video clip prospect players the club has bought that have been a disaster, the club will have lost millions.
While we may have 12 players out only 6 regularly play so the job isn't that big.
So the question Booster is asking is valid, does anyone know ? what is the plans for these players ?

Good stuff, Where did you find that ? I looked him up after seeing him play, when I realised he was a Hibs loan player, he looked terrific, he has played in every game in 24/25 and started 97% be pleased to see him get an opportunity next season.

Let me put it this way. I KNOW he doesn't watch our loan players, he doesn't even speak to them. Is that blunt enough?

Was he announced as Loans manager? Just checked.
Following the expiration of his contract and after several positive conversations with the Club, Marshall has agreed to join the Club’s football department at HTC.
In a new role, David will become the Club’s Technical Performance Manager, working closely with new Sporting Director Malky Mackay.
He will work on strengthening the Football Operations Department on the performance side, working directly to support the Sporting Director and First Team operation.

Every game is recorded throughout the Scottish leagues these days, the club won’t be short of footage for our players out on loan.
Is watching footage the same as watching a game in person? Not being a smart arse but I genuinely think it's totally different.
In person you can see a the whole pitch and see what players are doing relative to the action and off the ball, on TV or other footage the camera tends to be focused only where the ball is and the scope for viewing is much reduced.
I often find people who watch the game on TV and those who attend have massively different opinions on how a player played or the overall performance. I remember a few years back under Fenlon we went through to Partick Thistle and it was a pretty dull game but I thought it was a professional away performance, disciplined and we scored a decent goal to win 1-0. The players got a good reception at the end and most people seemed to be going home happy whilst acknowledging it wasn't a game that would live long in the memory (albeit here I am 12 years later:greengrin). I came on here when I got home and the reaction was as if it had been a 10-0 defeat, largely the views of those who had watched on screens. I'm not saying I was right and they were wrong, just that we saw the game totally differently at least in part because of the medium we watched it through.

It’s not the same but lower league teams all play at 3pm on a Saturday so it’s physically impossible for whoever is loan manager to watch all their games. The club has much more access to monitor how loan players are doing than they have in the past.

A Loan Manager should still be looking to attend at least one game a week to see the player for himself.
He's got the rest of the week to watch video, talk with players/their clubs and to visit other clubs to build relationships.

If that's the case it must be costing Club Brugges a fortune to come over every week to watch Joe Bursik sit on the bench. What a waste of time!

I can’t remember seeing anything about him being Loans Manager, there’s not much when I googled it either. Here’s what’s on the official site:
https://www.hibernianfc.co.uk/news/2024/june/10/david-marshall-retires---joins-hibs-football-department-/
Is there anything that contradicts this and says he’s the Loans Manager? Would be interested to read more about it.

Eddie Mays previous role was loans manager.
Re-sheduled game for Queen of the South last night, 3-2 win over Inverness, another 90 minutes for Oscar Macintyre, going off Queens FB page some comments have him as there best player this season.

He's got the rest of the week to watch video, talk with players/their clubs and to visit other clubs to build relationships.
He isn't a loan manager though, he may be involved in the loaned out players development but he'll also have a host of other roles that likely involve him being at Hibs first team games.
It's probably a tough job time wise to keep track of how each of our players are doing, while also maintaining a reference point of how they're performing versus our senior players in their position.
If Marshall has to watch Oscar MacIntyre each week to see how good he is, then by that logic he'll never be able to see how good or bad Obita is for example. It's all about balance and making the most of your resources, that probably includes watching video and getting reports back from the clubs on how the lads are getting on.
It's also worth reminding folk that there are probably quite a few of our loaned out lads that are playing at a level that allows them to still train with Hibs during the week, so it's not like they go away for a year and we see what player we get back next summer. We'll see the steady progression if it's there.

There will be a whole host of players out on loan that we will devote no more than token resources to keeping an eye on. Kenneh, Tavares, Delferriere, McClelland etc are just killing time until we can get them off the books. Unless we suddenly start getting rave reviews back we aren't spending any time on them.
Someone like Freddie Owens is a decent young keeper but he has not long turned 19 and is in the Lowland League so not exactly knocking on the first team door. We will probably put a fair bit of faith in Gary Jardine to report back on how is doing given he has worked for Hibs in the past and is an experienced manager at the level. Hibs won't be watching him every week.
Even among the young lads closer to the point where they need to be staking a claim in the 1st team there will only be a couple we are really serious about and they will be the guys we are sending people to watch. I spoke with George Craig years ago and he said that from about 16/17 upwards youth teams are just an expensive necessity at a club like Hibs. With the very odd exception you already know the handful who have a chance of making it and the rest of the squad are just kept around to make a team to let these boys play. You start to whittle away at that and by the time you get to 19/20 you are looking for the right loan for the ones you are serious about.
It's unrealistic to expect Hibs to have the resources to watch every loan player every week, with a finite budget that just isn't going to happen. I'm hopeful there will be 2 or 3 we are watching regularly; the rest will more than likely never grace the first team.

Today’s goals makes Vente the joint 7th highest scorer in the Netherlands this season. All the players ahead of him play for teams much higher in the league than him with 3 of them playing for PSV and one each from FC Twente, AZ Alkmaar and Go Ahead Eagles who are all in the top 7 compared to Ventes team in 13th. He has more league goals than anyone from Ajax or Feyenoord who are much better sides than anyone in our league.
Pretty damn impressive.

I think with one year left on his deal after this we'd probably be a bit silly to bring him back if there's a really good amount on the table for him. It didn't work for him here last season and there's no guarantee he can transfer his form once again from Netherlands to here and risk him being not only poor for us but also losing him for nothing when we spent quite a chunk on him.
Right now as a goalscorer he's outperforming guys that would normally be quoted in the 10s of millions as a transfer fee. I'm not suggesting for a second we can get £5-10m for the guy, but if he carries on with this level of form and finishes the league with something like 12-15 goals it wouldn't be outwith the realm of possibility to land ourselves a good couple of million on the back of that and leave his time here in profit.

McClelland has done better than I thought he would at Coleraine. They recently got major investment and they will keep him around if they rate him. In terms of Vente it would be a great deal if we sell him for more than we paid.

Vente has been a topic of conversation in other posts on this forum. I think the only option now is to sell him in the summer. We paid good money for him, and would be silly not to try recoup that. With a year on his contract to go after this season it's only logical that we sell in the summer. The last thing we want is a situation our obsessive maroon neighbours are having with their version of beavis and butthead (Shankland).

I agree, I would be surprised if any part of him wants to come back here after being back home and doing well. If any Eredivisie team wants to take him he'll want to leave. At that point why would we bother to hold onto him?

Exactly, he's at too delicate a stage at his career to come back to us and risk falling away again.
If I was Gray and the recruitment I'd be considering trying to entice Nisbet back in the summer. He and Bowie could be an interesting partnership. The classic one comes short and the other goes long. Our style of football suits Nisbet more than Aberdeens does. He is a finisher, which is what we are needing.

Yeah, Tavares could keep the Hibs money hose on for another 16 months.
As for Aiken, Hibs will give him an extension if they think he is good enough. He's only 20 so not as if it will cost Hibs a fortune to sign him up until the end of the year to make up ground and a loan for the rest of this season would be a start.

Thanks again for this interesting info.
Brian Graham was sent off after 37 minutes for Partick which handed the game to Falkirk so hard to read anything into the Megwa substitution.
Oscar MacIntyre seems to be really killing it on his loan.
I could see Megwa, Molotnikov and the MacIntyre brothers being in Hibs first team squad next season in place of all the hinger abooters that have been moved on.
Getting worried for Murray Aiken. He needs another loan now.

It would be great to see some of these boys get an opportunity in the summer, MM made a reference in his last interview to having a starter, 2nd choice and a development player, these boys will be hungry and not on fortunes.
Totally agree Murray Aiken has been unfortunate with injuries but needs back in the shop window A.S.A.P.

Only 15 months left on DV's contract so a certain sale in the summer. Just a question of which club signs him and for how much. Hopefully a number of clubs are interested and we can get a good fee.
Don't know if the loan club, PEC Zwolle have an option to buy as there was no mention publicly of it when the deal went through.
They are a slightly smaller club than Hibs so are unlikely to be able to pay any more for him than we did so can't see him signing for them unless there is an option to buy fee and it is no more than 700k.

Was at the Forfar game at the weekend and Reuben is hardly ripping it up. He is being played wide right but appears to prefer his left foot which means cutting in side all the time. He was substituted in the second half and then at half time last night. He needs to be doing a lot better if he wants to stay at ER.

Alas, no.
Vente has less than 15 months left on his contract now so for common sense economic reasons he has to be sold this summer.
A million quid would probably see us break even on his transfer fee etc plus the wages we have spent on him.

We'd be mad to let him leave for a million in the summer, if we were to qualify for Europe and be guaranteed group stage football through to Christmas. Letting the 3rd top goalscorer in the Dutch leagues leave for £1m when we're guaranteed European football. I doubt it very much.
In such a scenario, I'd rather he contributes for our European campaign but if someone offers ridiculous money then he can go.

Seems like they don't have an option to buy https://www.fanvanpeczwolle.nl/artikel/de-kans-lijkt-klein-dat-dylan-vente-na-de-zomer-nog-in-zwolle-speelt
The chance seems small that Dylan Vente will still play in Zwolle after the summer
At PEC Zwolle they would like striker Dylan Vente to play in Zwolle after the summer, but that chance is small because they expect the loaned out player back in Scotland. The now 25-year-old striker is in very good shape and has already hit the bull's eye six times after the winter break. At the moment, the total count is already at ten hits.
In the program De Voetbal****ine of ESPN, Vente said: The chance of a longer stay in Zwolle is small anyway. "I am on loan to PEC for one year, so it is the intention that I return to Hibernian".
Vente's contract in Scotland runs until mid-2026. He is not very happy with that, because the kick and rush that Scottish football is known for does not necessarily suit his game. "You know in advance that this is how it will be played. I thought I could have made the difference with runs and cleverness, but then the quality of the ball has to be good."
For Vente, however, there is no other option than to return to Hibernian after this season. "Before I came, I thought that PEC had put a clause in my rental contract, but I don't think that's in it."

Yeah I agree, Oscar has 1 year left at Hibs after this season, having seen him play twice this season and on both occasions was a standout would have no issues bringing him in however we have Iredale LCB/LB, Cadden LB/LWB ( both of which have been top performers) and Obita LB/LWB/LCH for his development being 4th choice would be crazy option especially given the ammount of games he's used to playing.

Does he usually play on the left of a back 3 ( like Iredale) or more of a left wing back like Cadden/Obita ? ( I really hope we give Iredale an extension long before the end of next season)
get Oscar playing as a left wingback at a higher level next year and then he’s the ideal replacent for Obita the year after. Understudy to Cadden .

Oscar has played most of his games as a LB or LWB so an ideal replacement for Obita who will be 33 at the end of his deal.
If he went on another loan it would have to be championship he could return to Easter Road at 21 with 100+ games and be ready to play.

There are folk on here who will know his playing style a lot better than me but in the times i have seen him play he has been a wing back, so as you say would see him slotting in to Obita's wing back berth when he moves on.
As for Iredale I see Hibs offering him an extension. Other than the occasional skyed clearance he has been very good and is probably as good as we are going to get our hands on so hopefully we can get him on an extended deal.

It's a strange one. Kettlewell was the manager that stated Tavares was injured but didn't say what was wrong with him and Motherwell don't appear to have mentioned it anytime since so you could be right.
I thought he should have gone to the Championship to play regularly this season so that potential suiters could properly benchmark his level. He's 24 now and is sleepwalking into oblivion by not playing.

I'm starting to fear for Murray Johnson's development now. Airdrie wasn't a huge success but it exposed him to the trials and tribulations of senior football in a struggling side. The decision to send him to QOTS feels a bit silly now considering the chances of him seeing the pitch are next to zero at this point unless the current number 1 gets an injury or suspension.

I remember reading that he turned down a loan to Malaga about a year or two ago and that for me probably summed him up that he had next to no desire to push himself for the sake of his career sadly.
His career in Scotland is all but over despite having 1 year left of his Hibs contract imo. He and his agent should have been doing all they could to get him back out to either Portugal or a Spain while his stock of being a Benfica academy prospect that performed well at that level still held any weight for signing him.
It's been pretty obvious for the majority of his time at Hibs, bar one 3-5 month spell under Monty, that he was not going to be a success here. All parties should have worked on an exit route for not only our financial situation but for his long term career. As it stands you find it hard to see how he even picks up the lowest of full-time opportunities given the last 3 years of evidence.

A month ago Motherwell said Tavares was back in full training but no sign of him in their match day squads of 20 to date.
I suspect they don't have any more fit players given 7 first teamers are currently out injured with only two having any chance of playing again this season.
Kinda makes Tavares the Kwon of Motherwell.

Left back i think quite small in stature i think
I watched him in the u19 European games 2 years ago and he looked on the slighter side, however I've seen him this season the boy is unit and has a bit of pace about him. Stats online say he's 5'10/5'11.
Does Tavares not have a kid and girlfriend here, hence why he doesn't want to move, or have I got that mixed with another player.

Still very young for a goalie
He’s OOC in the summer, but he’s done well this season, think he’s got a chance
Thanks for that Billy.
Yeah, not many keepers get a chance at our level before the age of 24.
Freddie is 10 months younger than Murray Johnston and the flappers are already starting to doubt him because he hasn't managed to play on loan this season.
I looked through all the goalkeepers playing in Scotland a few weeks ago and there were no young guys playing at a decent level.
From memory Tobi Oluwayemi who is 22 in 6 weeks time and on loan at Dunfermline from Celtic was the youngest keeper playing at the highest level in Scotland that weekend. So no keeper younger than Tobi playing for the 22 Scottish clubs above Dunfermline that weekend.
Think there were another 2 keepers about the same age playing in the leagues below that but usually out of necessity rather than choice.
Again from memory I think the Ross County keeper Jordan Amissah is the youngest in the top league and he will be 24 when next season starts and is OOC in 2 months time.
Hopefully Freddie gets his contract renewed and him and Murray can get a gig on loan next season. Freddie perhaps in the 4th tier and Murray in the 2nd or 3rd.

It must be a ridiculously hard position to be successful at, especially as a new goalkeeper generally comes through every season at youth level, and their big chance generally doesn’t come until mid twenties.
Thats why I was astounded, why Man City paid such an enormous fee for a 15 year old goalkeeper.
The the chances of him playing any first team football is almost nil for at the very least 6 years.

Incrediablly hard position for young players to progress once they finish at U18's. The argument would be Murray Johnston has had loans at a higher level but not great time game, I mentioned in a previous post I've a Q of S mate who goes to most games said Ross Stewart, 29yrs, ex Hearts, St Mirren, Livingston is a really decent keeper so was surprised that Hibs sent him there if Murray was looking for games?
Freddie Owens is at a lower level but the Strollers No1 and picking up a great amount of game time and experience also puts him in a fantastic position for his next loan.

Aye, it’s not like outfield positions where you’ll see managers giving young players minutes here and there, or where an injury happens to an outfield player and managers give a youngster a chance to start.

If we get into Europe next season you need 3 registered keepers with uefa
Also if 1 gets injured you need a back up, so technically you need 4 goalies

I'd be happy to pick up an out of contract keeper on a four week deal if one of our three got injured.
As long as he doesn't get on the pitch it would mean he'd still be free to sign for another team after our short term deal is up. It's what we should have done last time rather than recall Johnstone.
Or we could even re-register Marshall as a player.

Thats why I was astounded, why Man City paid such an enormous fee for a 15 year old goalkeeper.
The the chances of him playing any first team football is almost nil for at the very least 6 years.
So many issues make it almost impossible for young players to be the No1 keeper at a good level.
We are seeing so many keepers playing into their late 30's now with Gordon at a mental 42 and Schmeichel at 38 and last season there was Hart and Marshall who were similar ages.
As you say new batches of young keepers are produced every year but when they reach 18 years old the best keepers produced over the 20 previous batches are still playing all over the country.
We are also getting guys rocking up on loan from decent English clubs every season who are in their mid 20's and have never really played much football.
Our own keeper Jordan Smith is 30 and has played little football in his career. Just kept behind glass at Nottingham Forest for years to be used in emergencies.
As for Man City giving us a couple of hundred thousand for Vickery. It's chicken feed for them. Just another prospect to add to their player farm. Thats another issue i.e. big clubs stock piling the best young talent including goalkeepers then renting it out and selling it across the UK and Europe.
Last season Will Dennis was on loan at Kilmarnock from Bournemouth, he is 25 and back to barely playing at his club. This season we have:
Walton on loan at Dundee Utd from Luton for the 2nd season in a row. He's 27 in a months time and has played more games there than in the rest of his career put together.
Ellery Balcombe is 25 and has been on loan from Brentford at St Mirren and now Motherwell.
Andy Fisher is 27 and on loan at St Johnstone from Swansea
Zach Hemming is 25 and on loan at St Mirren from Musselbrough
So our clubs from the 6th biggest to bottom 12th are in the main choosing to bring in loan keepers rather than use their own which tells us there is a good supply of decent quality, good value keepers that they think are better and less of a risk than their own young guys.
So between the old guys and the English loans there are very few goalkeeping spots available in our top league for young players before the age of 25.
P.S. Re that list of the current 10 best keepers in our league that folk were getting all upset about.
The youngest and only Scottish keeper on the list was 42 years old Craig Gordon, so yeah it is bloody hard for a young Scottish keeper to get a gig.

Yeah, as soon as I saw Ross Stewart was at QOS it was obvious that Murray wouldn't start unless Stewart gets injured or his form goes off a cliff.
Probably should have sent him to a bottom tier club in January just to get regular gametime.
The big unforseen with Murray this season was being sent to Airdrie on loan as their number 1 but then quickly losing his place to another inexperienced, but older loanee and not being able to get it back.
As I keep saying he will still only be 20 when he goes on loan next season and will probably be the youngest keeper at the playing level he goes to so he is still on schedule.

Adams is out of contract in 10 weeks and 21 in the summer. Wonder if Dundee Utd will offer him another contract or he decides to sign up for Kelty if they want him. The issue for Adams is Kelty are part time. I presume he currently trains with his parent club through the week and he would lose that.
Kelty are the 30th ranked team in Scotland at the moment and he is the youngest keeper playing regularly in those top 30 teams.
Suggests Murray probably needs to find a loan gig in the same league next season.

I think priority one for players going on loan it to go somewhere you’ll be played. For goalkeepers that’s a binary position, there’s no 15 minutes at the end of the game.
Assuming the loan would be in Scotland the next thing is the level to play at. First of all you need to be good enough but if your parent club want the player to continue training with them ( particularly for young players) that basically cancels out your top two tiers.
you mentioned Kelty were 30 in the rankings, I wonder how far you need to go before you get a younger goalie. I can’t think of many ‘young’ goalies in L1 or 2, McFarlane at EF maybe and that’s only 2 months difference.
im not sure with Murray’s experience Airdrie was a wise move (easy to say in retrospect). But staying in Scotland, L1 seems like it might be his best bet next season.

I was talking with David Marshall about this the other day and it was either training compensation or manage a fee but due to the players age and the fact the player wanted to go, the leverage didn’t sit with Hibs but by all accounts, we managed to get a decent deal out of it. He also mentioned how City have sold 3 GK’s for nearly a combined £40m after picking them up cheaply at a young age - Trafford, Muric & Bazunu. Granted there’s probably a few that haven’t worked out but got the feeling that if he moves on for a fee, we’ll see some of that.

Is it not the case that if EPL teams sign a player young on professional terms they are considered 'home grown' and so if they sell in later years then the whole fee can go as a positive for FFP regs.
Seems to be part of the new model along with stockpiling slightly older talent that is loaned bringing in loan fees and a few big transfers particularly Chelsea have maxed this

McAllister still seems like he's got something, unfortunately his large price tag meant expectations were too high. Being out of contract if he does come good it probably won't be for Hibs.

See Megwa won Particks young player of the year award, I know it’s Twitter, but doesn’t look to have gone down well.
Yeah, that was on social media over the weekend, some pretty rough comments, I get that not everyone will agree but seems to be poor reaction.

Cracking goal from Jacob McIntyre for kelty.
20 Yards out, swerves into bottom right hand corner, he’s been getting a lot of game time for kelty, it was a good choice going to them.

Wasn’t overly impressed with Megwa in the playoff games I watched. He must have something about him to have earned a four year deal, but I’m certain not expecting him to be in contention for a starting slot nest season. Does he tick a box for homegrown in regards to European football. If not it would be nice to see him loaned out to a bottom half SPL team (winner of county / Livi?) to see how he gets on.
Vente was an unused sub in FC Zwoles two most recent games prior to today, and was subbed of at HT in the game before that. He never made the squad today.
I can only assume / hope this is due to an injury, and if so hopefully a minor one. A shame he never got the chance to add to his impressive goal tally.

Anyone know if some of the younger lads are ready to step up this year?
Oscar Macintyre - seems to have played every week at Queen of the South in League 1. Saw he was named in ‘SM Media team of the year’. Left back though which is an area of the pitch we’re really strong.
Jacob Macintyre - Again seems to have played alot and impressed at Kelty, winning their young player of the year. Centre mid but Charlie Mulgrew was on open goal recently saying he see’s him as a right wing back. Scored a couple of crackers on loan. Signed a new deal with us last year until 2027 so must be highly rated.
Kanayo Megwa - Young player of the year at Partick however going by their fans reaction it was through default due to his age. Doesn’t appear to have had as impressive a campaign this year.
Murray Aiken - Similar to Megwa doesn’t appear to have had as many plaudits. Starting with Airdie and then dropping to League 2. Seems to have had bad luck with injuries
Reuben McAllister- Started on loan at cove, never seemed to play much before dropping to League 2 with Forfar where he scored 4 goals and got 1 assist in 16 games.
Murray Johnson - loans to Airdie and then QOTS however doesn’t seem to play, surprising as everyone you talk to says how highly rated he is/was

Not seen much of them other than Megwa but I think it's going to be tough for any of them to break through at the moment. Particularly as we'll be playing European rather than League Cup games next season. Even Molotnikov struggled for game time as the season just gone progressed.

We might need a very big squad if we qualify for European group stages, Oscar McIntyre could certainly step in as back up, in case of injuries.
Our under 18 team now play , in the new under 19 league, and compete in the under 19s CL, can they play in the CL games, and the main squads European games.

I think Oscar Macintyre played matches at left back, right back, left centre back and possibly midfield this season, that kind of versatility could come in very handy if he’s not loaned out this coming season. Allows him to be an option in multiple positions, and free’s up bench space for DG by being so versatile

Gut instinct tells me Kanayo Megwa will stay until the end of the European campaign at least. Same with Murray Johnson and both MacIntyres potentially. But after that wraps they'll likely be sent back out on loan.
However I imagine Murray Aiken and Reuben McAllister will be away (Reuben I think is out of contract this summer anyway).

Think he’s really athletic and would suit the wing back role well. Seems to have bulked up massively too
