Disgusting. I hope Hibs never draft in an overweight keeper who hasn't played in a while as an emergency signing who then goes on to indulge in a bit of sledging when facing a penalty or 2, I'd be appalled and suggest we forfeit the game for being so unsporting.
We'd never stand for it and no was would such a player attain legendary status.
Totally agree 👍

I'd say certainly rather than probably. The idea a FA would keep something like that to themselves to field a stronger team is absurd.
The family would also be in direct contact with the player through all the normal channels.
That makes sense

It's sad to see the women gradually adopting the same approach to the game as the men i.e.stamping on opponents, professional fouls and feigning injury. These elements of the game have severely dented my interest in football along with the ludicrous salaries available to average players nowadays. I can only see the women's game going the same way - encouraged by the craven media of course.

Maybe by the bookies etc. But anyone who knows woman's football knows that Spain were the pick. The talent pool they have is outrageous and they're missing around 10 players.

The USA won it in 2019 and 2015 and they were runners up in 2011. This year would have been their third win in a row.
Spain had never been in the final until yesterday.

As Just_Jimmy points out, though, the bookies aren't always right. I mentioned earlier that Spain are now women's world champions at U17, U20 and senior level. Their progress has been rapid for sure but anyone who follows women's football regularly and was looking for a good bet would have been tempted to back them.

Hopefully not. They're certainly still a long way from the crazy top men's salaries for one.
As someone who watches the women's game regularly (free tickets to a Scotland game a few years back from one of my kids' football-playing teachers got us into it and myself and other parents quite regularly take groups of kids, both boys and girls, to games) one of the most refreshing aspects of it is the lack of bile and rage among those watching! You could see from the Euros last year and the World Cup that there's nothing but positivity in the stands and I'd be surprised if the England girls receive anything but commiserations/congratulations rather the the social media bile the England men's players receive for falling at the final hurdle.

I’m also disgusted at the glorifying, hero worship publicity that this woman has attracted. Not a single word from the English pundits or press about her cheating at the penalty ( no it was a great bit of goalkeeping )…… not to mention her other unsporting behaviour. I’m delighted they lost.

Best women's keeper in the world:
How Mary Earps confirmed her status as world's best goalkeeper - BBC Sport (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66567155)
She's a very decent player and, as another poster has mentioned, exemplifies the very marked improvement in the standard of women's goalkeeping which was quite a glaring weakness in the game previously.
The guff folk are spouting about it being outrageous that she tried to put the penalty taker off is just another way of saying they don't like England.

The final between England and Spain takes place later tonight, but while the Matildas campaign is over....they are anything but losers.
They may have been beaten in the 3rd place playoff yesterday, but The Matildas have won the hearts and minds of the Australian public that most commentators agree, will change society as we know it.
You really had to be here to see the effect the Matildas campaign had on the nation...whether it be the record tv ratings....the Matildas v England semi was the most watched TV programme - sport or otherwise - in the history of television, the crowds that came to see them ...10 years ago the biggest crowd they got in Sydney was 15,000....now it is nearly 76,000....and would have been more if the stadiums were bigger...and the promises of $200 million dollars in funding by the Prime Minister for women's sport in general.
Not to mention the statue the Queensland government is going to build a statue to them outside Lang Park(Suncorp Stadium) in Briabane....previously a rugby league stronghold.
For a non football country and a general 'blokey' one at that, the attitudinal changes have been huge.
I don't think there is anybody in Australia's 26 million population who if asked, doesn't know the name of at least one of the players.
At the start of the world cup the team said they wanted to unite the nation and leave a legacy ...well, they have certainly done that, and in a way nobody thought was possible.
On the field the athleticism of Sweden against a tired and emotionally exhausted Matildas side was clear to see...so we have a bit to go playing wise still......but this world cup has been almost like the Oz equivalent of the 2016 cup final win in Edinburgh.
There simply aren't going to be enough parks to cope with the influx of young girls teams next season throughout Australia who have been inspired to take up the game by the Matildas.
BBC iPlayer - Fifa Womens World Cup 2023 - Review (https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001q7fl/fifa-womens-world-cup-2023-review)
Fred, this was on BBC1 last night. I don't know if you'll be able to access it where you are but it's really well put together and captures a lot of what you're saying about the amazing buzz (and legacy) the event created across Australia and New Zealand (especially the bit you mention about everyone knowing the players' names).

Of course the bookies aren't always right! They'd be out of business if they were, but a favourite is a favourite!
However, being tempted to bet doesn't a favourite make.

His victim didn't think it was mutual.
Hermoso released a long statement on social media, saying: "I want to make clear that at no time did the conversation to which Mr Luis Rubiales refers to in his address take place and, above all, was his kiss ever consensual."

This row has certainly taken the gloss of their world cup win but I suppose it's healthy to play these matters out on a big stage.
If an equivalent incident had occurred in the England dressing room I could imagine the guy might have ended up with his teeth to play with.

I was quite bemused at the time by the amount of hugging/kissing going on with all the dignitaries in the presentation line-up, male and female. Maybe it's been the norm at women's tournaments and I just haven't really noticed it before.

Unreconstructed Latin machismo/exuberance prompting a witch-hunt or is he really Spain's equivalent of Harvey Weinstein as many are keen to brand him? Personally, having now watched the presentation ceremony in full, I think it's clear he badly over-stepped the mark, not just with the player he kissed. Not sure it constitutes 'sexual violence' though, much as such behaviour is deeply unwelcome to women and really should be a thing of the past.

Luis Rubiales resigns as president of Spanish FA over Jenni Hermoso kiss - BBC Sport (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66637879)
Luis Rubiales has resigned as president of the Spanish Football Federation following criticism for kissing Spain forward Jenni Hermoso at the Women's World Cup final presentation ceremony.
Hermoso, 33, said the kiss after Spain beat England was not consensual and she filed a legal complaint (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66732327) last Tuesday.
He released a statement saying he had submitted his resignation to federation acting president Pedro Rocha.
"I cannot continue my work," Rubiales said on 'Piers Morgan Uncensored'.
The 46-year-old has also resigned from his position as vice-president of Uefa's executive committee.
Rubiales claimed the kiss was "mutual and "consensual" but had been provisionally suspended by football's world governing body Fifa.
Hermoso's legal complaint means he could face criminal charges.
"After the quick suspension carried out by Fifa, plus the rest of open proceedings against me, it is evident that I will not be able to return to my position," Rubiales' statement read.

Former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales has been banned from all football-related activities for three years by Fifa.
Rubiales kissed forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips following Spain's Women's World Cup final win over England.
The kiss, which forward Hermoso says was not consensual, sparked outcry, with Rubiales eventually stepping down from his role in September.
Hermoso later filed a legal complaint against Rubiales.
On Monday, world governing body Fifa announced the three-year ban for breaching article 13 of its disciplinary code.
Rubiales says he intends to appeal against the ban.
"I will go to the last resort to see that justice is done and that the truth shines through," he said on social media.
