It's very pleasing how high up the pitch we are, all ten outfield players in the opposition half. Not letting Hartlepool build anything or get out.

Well done Hibs.
Loads of positives to take from that and well done on Johnson for his first win.
The pressing was very noticeable and the players looked good at it.
Hartlepool were awful however and never offered any threat or showed any quality, that’s the most defensive I’ve seen a team in a friendly.
Fitness exercise though and the players will no doubt feel the benefit.

Miller giving Johnson a pleasing headache, Cadden had made that position his own but Miller was excellent.
If we are going to go 4-2-3-1 then I'd be tempted with the following:
Marshall
Miller
Porteous
Hanlon
Stevenson
JDH
Kenneh
Tavares
Henderson
McGeady
Youan

Caveat that we were playing an unimpressive Hartlepool side, who I believe are pretty low on squad numbers with no senior strikers, but it was promising from Hibs.
We certainly looked like a side willing to put in the hard work with lots of pressing, especially in the 45 minutes. We seemed stronger on a lot of the basics such as getting players into the box and making runs off the ball than last season where we were reliant on Boyle for the first half and then Maloney had us own half possession champions for the second.
I like the look of Miller, a great build and engine with plenty aggression even in a friendly. Kenneh, pinged a lovely 60-yard pass and made some good tackles - maybe the wrong footwear today but he looks promising, McLelland looked very comfortable on the ball although we didn't see much of him defensively as H'Pool offered v little going forward. Bushiri very composed and looked more comfortable than last season. I think it'll be a really big year for JDH who I rate highly, from today it looks like his role will be to get further up the park and move the ball forward which I think will suit him well.
Tavares, I like that he's constantly looking to take people on but showed maturity to slow it down and keep ball at times too, will be interesting to see how he does this season. Youan showed great pace and could have scored, bringing a decent save out the goalie and set up a good change for Hauge who despite not scoring looked lively. Delfierre looks composed and confident and I was impressed by Hendersons work rate, which is one of my main points of contention with him based on last season.
No prizes for seeing how good McGeady is/will be, he showed he still has a decent turn of pace too which I was slightly surprised about, really excited for him to tear it up this season.
A promising start, looking forward to further development of the team and the upcoming games.

Didn’t look like someone who had only had 2 days training and hadn’t played for over 7 months.
He’ll be massive for us this season, definitely think he’ll be used out wide now. It would be a waste to play him centrally with that crossing ability.

HarTlepool were knackered in the 2nd half which game us loads of freedom to knock the ball about. First half our pressing was exceptional and that clearly broke the Hartlepool boys. Can't wait to see us in a "real" game soon.

29-06-2022, 12:35 PM
That wasn't a bad watch, good pressing by the whole team and a few decent individual performances as well, definitely a step up from Maloneyball already by the looks of it. We still seem to have a problem in that we got the ball into the box from wide quite a few times with no striker near to getting on the end of it, but early days and all that.
But in all honesty its hard to judge us as on the back of that game, Hartlepool looked a really poor team, Hibs could have had me in goals today and I probably would have kept a clean sheet, whether that was because our pressing high up simply prevented them getting up the park or they just weren't good enough to do it is hard to say, probably a combination of both.
Good start to pre season with a few of the new guys looking like they could be real assets, but I'll wait until we play opposition a good level above what we played today before I start getting too excited about our prospects for the new season. Winning games is never a bad thing though :greengrin

Have to say (with all the pre-season caveats included) I was shocked by how bad Hartlepool were - they got to the FA Cup 4th round and EFL Trophy semis last year. Surely this was a shadow side as if this game was anything to go by Hibs are a good few tiers above their level.
Putting that to the side, Hibs looked hungry, fit and confident, while all the new guys and youngsters showed up well. We are still lacking a reliable, robust centre forward IMO though in flashes Youan showed he could be a real threat. If we keep McGeady fit, he is going to be a gamechanger also.

We looked physically to be a lot stronger than Hartlepool which is quite unusual as when we've played against English teams in the past it's been the opposite.

- Miller was excellent.

- Tavares did well and Kenneh came into the game.
Unless we have a replacement lined up we shouldn’t be letting Doidge go anywhere. He is our only fit, proper centre forward.

TBF to Hartlepool they've lost some of their better players and only just brought in 4 from Scotland. They also lost one of their better players, Tom Crawford early on today, leaving them without a striker. Pleased with Hibs though but as ever our finishing needs to be better. Mind you Youan was spanking them in during the warm up. Great support and some very funny but rather rude chants directed at Paul Hartley.

The strikers didn't play up front on their own. We were camped 35 yards from their goal with plenty players around the strikers.
If we continually punted the long ball in their direction, you might have a point, but on that showing, I don't know how you can judge this lone striker theory today.

So many positives albeit against a level of opponent were miles ahead of.
First half
Miller got torn in
McLelland looks composed
Kenneh grew and had one or two crunching tackles
JDH and Hendo well involved
Hauge looks like a different player
Second half
Different approach, emphasis on getting ball wide and crosses in to box
Doig and McGeady linked really well, the latter having some great movement and crosses
Delfierre looked natural in CM. very promising

Second half McGeady's ability to see a pass was plain to see, the awareness he showed reminded me of Scott Alan at his best, any doubt that he will have anything to add to the team were answered in that 45 minutes for me, thinking back to lots of games where teams sat in deep and we couldn't break them down most obvious being the St Johnstone game in the Scottish cup final behind closed doors McGeady could have a big role this season.

Hauge arguably arrived here with a more impressive CV then Melkersen with a handful of first team appearances at Bodo/Glimt. I’m surprised him and Delferriere never got more of a look in last season.

I got speaking to a sunderland fan last week on holiday in spain. He basically said he liked Lee Johnson , that he was very attack minded , lots of goals in their matches. His downside was that he thought he want good enough defensively. I laughed and asked him if he remembered Tony Mowbray , he did of course , so I explained that the favourite manager/era of my lifetime as a Hibs fan was Mowbray, he was also very attack minded with the team exposed defensively a lot though. Could be an exciting team to watch going by what the guy was telling me , lots of 4-3 3-2 kind of games , and most probably the games where we let slip 2 and 3 goal leads on occasion.
Obviously id like us to be better defensively, but id sooner watch 2-2 games over 0-0 , or winning 3-2 over a boring 1-0.

Was speaking to a friend of mine who is a Sunderland supporter (and has a soft spot for the Jam Farts annoyingly, but shows a lack of bias) - says that McGeady still absolutely has it, just that nowadays he's quite injury prone but when he's on the pitch he's still a top quality player.
Also thinks that Lee Johnson was unfairly sacked and improved a number of their players and quite often played enjoyable football.

Lucky not to go a goal behind then a very good goal. I love strikers that get in front of defenders. Doidge could learn from Melkerson how to get on the end of low crosses

I know social distancing is common sense but I think he's providing the commentary from the other side of the car park.
Josh Campbell again causing issues for Burton.

I do like the wee thing of having players who are injured/subbed providing co-commentary. Saves money too.
