After a chat with HH81 on the Boxing Day football, opening this thread for folks to contribute with match day visits outside of our beloved Hibs.
Interested to hear of the local, the far flung, the weird wonderful and ordinary.

I’m heading to Morpeth. A great wee market town I always enjoy visiting but this is the first time for football….

Craik Park Morpeth for Morpeth Town v Whitby Town, Northern Premier League, 3pm KO.

Anyone else up to much?

No game for me this weekend.

I almost headed to Bashford United as my nephew is going back to uni so was going to offer to take him.

He ended up going back down yesterday.

Will be heading to the new York City ground in Feb/March time to check that out. Got couple of games pencilled in to pick from. Looks on pictures like a 4 boxed stand with odd seats bit like Brentford.

My wife's sister lives at Eastwood (Eastwood Town) and they have a non league ground across the road. Plan on heading there to a game when we next go down. Looks good from the outside.

Spartans v The Strollers on Tuesday night at Ainslie Park. Had planned on a couple of pints in Clarks beforehand then jump on a bus up but they are closed a Tuesday currently so will need another plan.

Lincoln v Oxford next Saturday. The Mrs is from Lincolnshire and her dad is a Lincoln fan so I've sort of adopted them and keep and eye out for their results and the like. Both the bairns get Lincoln and Hibs strips every season so will be good to get the eldest to a game down there at last.

2-0 to Morpeth fiesty stuff and a late red card for the home side.
Nice little set up, busy clubhouse, tidy steak n kidney pie.
Noisy Whitby young team whose repertoire included an interesting take on “Anarchy in the UK” with something about Whitby boys Yorkshire boys and someone I couldn’t make out that they wanna destroy (not passers by). Wee scrap behind the goals after the 2nd which was surprising as it was all convivial up to then!
Enjoyable and a crowd in the high hundreds I’d think.

Been to Morpeth a few times in the last year, the clubhouse with the big decking is a goldmine.

Players are well looked after and paid well.

Remember seeing bamber bridge there and they were excellent, full of players released from academies.

It's a decent standard and great value👍💚

It was Stirling's home game with a change of venue because the floodlights at Forthbank have a fault. Stirling Albion's home game on Saturday coming is kicking off at 1 because of the problem.

Before the pandemic we had an annual family boys trip to a big overseas game, something I can't wait to restart after travel restrictions begin to eventually lift.

I could recommend all the games & stadiums so far. We got lucky with goalfests too. We saw:

Lazio 1 Roma 4 (2016)
Inter 3 Ac Milan 2 (2017)
Real Madrid 2 Barcelona 3 (2018)
NY Knicks 110 Washington 109 (2019)

Of those, the most bonkers atmosphere of the lot was the San Siro. 82,000 fans, including 13,000 "away" fans at one end. It was constant continual bedlam, topped off with Milan having a goal ruled out for offside (late flag too, delicious) and inter wrapping up 3-2 with a soft as butter injury time pen, for an icardi hat trick. Recommend!

Whats Darlington like Hutchy ? A few of our family are thinking about taking in a meeting at Sedgefield Races and staying in Darlington overnight. I've never been there but with the train stopping there it seems a logical choice and get a taxi to the racecourse

We go down quite often, plenty decent wee pubs in the compact town centre, prices ranged from £4.20-£6.00 for a pint of Strongbow and a John Smiths/Newcy Brown. 2 or 3 "above standard" pubs closer to Edinburgh prices, I would recommend The Hole in the Wall. The Premier Inn is right in the centre of town and is usually quite cheap.

Yes I think with Eastwood as the ground is near by it would mean I can walk there and have a beer 😁.

Think might be a retail park near by so the Mrs can have a walk round and I can nip to a game at York. Went to their old ground a few times, it was very good, liked the terrace behind the goals. Old fashioned ground and pretty close to the centre.

I have been to Barrow too.

What I have never got my head around is the football and rugby league grounds are about a mile apart and pretty similar in terms of appearance. I know there is history etc but seems a bit odd. Always felt should play at the same ground.

Also RL ground is closer to the town centre, which is very run down.

Bonnyrigg game sold out - seriously impressive time and again! Would imagine Penicuik-Tranent will be similar next week.

Was impressed with whitehill at Dunbar last week, a horrible side to play against - similar to when they played at Tranent earlier in the season, Penicuik won’t have it easy.

Looking forward to Preston’s first competitive game since the 20th November as Hawick visit the Pennypit.

Bonnyrigg game sold out - seriously impressive time and again!

Probably a good few hundred short of what would have been at the game were it not for the absolutely ludicrous restrictions as well.

Hopefully some money filters down from the support the football authorities were hoping to get.

Agreed. Slight advantage was seeing 130+ at the Preston-Hawick game today, around double the Panners average gate - mostly down to nobody having any football to go to. £8 for a ticket, pie and a ‘pint’ (can/bottle beer) is cracking value and an 8-0 win (biggest in their history I was told).

Spent the afternoon enjoyably at Edinburgh Uni v East Stirlingshire at Peffermill. Surprisingly good standard from both teams, who tried to get the ball down and play football. Shire were too powerful all round and ran out well deserved 3-0 winners. Still pressing in the Uni half moments from time - both teams looked very fit. Caught up with some old colleagues, and watched the match in a relaxed fashion, as I didn’t care who won. Bit cold, but took my own Bovril!

Gateshead 0-1 Chorley. £15. Both teams in play off zone in front of 850 fans, 42 from Chorley. Standard I’d think is similar to Div 2 in Scotland. Not much to choose between the teams. Stadium similar to watching football at the old Meadowbank. The Heed Army sang right through the game.

The Schooner pub near the ground is excellent. Great range of beer and scran at good prices. Mince pie in the ground £3 and far superior to anything on offer at ER. Good day out and it’d be worth going back for the derby v Blyth Spartans.

A reminder I’m actually watching a good standard of player at ER.

Stadium is 70’s brutalist architecture. If any less of the floodlight bulbs were working they’d have had to abandon the game. Fans were great though. A few disgruntled Mags who’ve given up swelling the crowd.

Suprised at 42, thought they would take couple 100.

Gateshead for a long time used go get under 500 so that's not actually a bad crowd for them.

If they can put a run together I think they can win it.

Got some good away games coming up which my mate asked if fancied Wrexham and Notts County.

What did suprise me was it was all ticket and Halifax were selling none on game day. Must have been room for 7000 more and fans locked out.

People were asking fans outside if had any spares. Crazy

Might have been no sales because Grimsby sold all theirs I guess? Looked a good following on a picture I saw on Twitter.

Presume the Wrexham game takes place after fans are allowed back at games in Wales?

The Wrexham game is in March so you would like to think there was a chance of that then.

I was hearing Grimsby were still selling ones left over on the day but Halifax took them off sale. Someone sent me this earlier -

Been doing some digging, I read was trouble at Wrexham home game and some fighting so police made it all ticket. Doesn't seem like was any restrictions on how they sold them.

Gala 0 bonnyrigg 3

Good following from the rose, Lee Currie still got a fantastic left peg.

Rose on top first half and deservedly 2-0 up.

Gala under Jimmy Scott came out the blocks second half and were denied a few times with good defending and goalkeeping, one effort looked like it had crossed the line but not given.

Bonnyrigg scored in the last minute to wrap up a great 3-0 win and stay clear at the top of the lowland, 2 more points than at the start of the day as rangers drew 2-2 at the braves.

Lentil soup for £1, the bargain of the season.

Bonnyrigg look certain to win the Lowland League and will be favourites to be promoted to League 2. I wouldn't imagine Linlithgow Rose will be far behind them but there's already big clubs with big money (relative to their level) in Boness, East Kilbride, Spartans, Berwick Rangers and a few others in the Lowland.

It's definitely a league worth going along to watch a game in if you have a spare weekend. I was really impressed with Spartans today, they moved the ball really well (although the opposition were admittedly not up to much).

Tranent bossed this game from first to last.

And I don't think it will be long until the Ayrshire junior teams join up, lowland league will get tougher.

Bonnyrigg a streetwise team, play 3-5-2,don't give much away and big mcgachie up top is a handful.

A few older boys but Robbie horn has them drilled and a strong unit, all boys are in positions they thrive in, Bradley Barret has some engine on the left and Dean Brett does exactly the same on the right.

Another 1-0 win for Preston yesterday who go joint top of their conference with a magnitude of games in hand over their rivals. If they do get promoted and Tranent fail to go up then it’ll be some premier division next season with Haddington also in the driving seat in their league, and Dunbar, Musselburgh and Tranent all in the Premier division already.

I think it will be tough for the East of Scotland Premier league winner to get promoted this season as it looks like they’ll be playing Auchinleck Talbot as West of Scotland league winners in the play off (if that is still the pyramid rule). Will be some game though either way

Linlithgow need to get into the lowland league before worrying about league 2. Said it so many times now, the pyramid is in such a healthy place with number of teams involved but the structure needs sorted now. League winners shouldn’t be playing 3/4 play off ties to go up. It shouldn’t rely on if a team comes down to determine whether promotion takes place etc.

Unfortunately the clubs higher up the league chain won’t ever agree to it but for teams to find their place it shouldn’t take 20+ years to sort it all out.

This is how the new stand development looked at the cup tie v Villa just before lockdown, Jan / Feb 2020. Great place to watch football. They were working it all around the preservation of the cottage.

Been in there. Nice wee quirk that seems to work well.

This time I'll be in the Johnny "Jambo" Haynes Stand.

Fulham is my current local team. I like the novelty of their old stand. Have tickets to see them play Blackburn and Mowbray at the beginning of March

Ive just moved to Chesterfield. The Spireites are away over the weekend so a visit to watch my new local team will have to wait. On Saturday i. Going to watch nearby Matlock Town in the Northern Premier League (tier 8 in England) tgey are playing Nantwich and are currently riding high in 3rd spot.
Matlock are away to nearby league leaders Buxton on Easter Monday which would probably be a better option but Ive got something else on the go that day.

Was at a Northern League Division 2 game a few weeks back. Heaton Stannington v Billingham Synthonia.

Quality was pretty grim, one standout player for the hosts who had clearly played at a higher level, albeit time and what I assume was more than a few pints of lager had caught up with him. Decent set up though and a healthy crowd of over 500. There's a lot to be said for being able to stand and have a couple of beers whilst watching the game. Not far from the centre of Newcastle, Metro station nearby or under a tenner in an Uber. Will likely take in another game sometime down the line.

Spartans v Bonnyrigg Rose for me tonight. Semi final so should be pretty tasty.

Decent game at Ainslie Park last night. Bonnyrigg running out 4-1 winners.

They scored very early down to a goalkeeping error, they could have added another couple quickly but the keeper redeemed himself with 2 very good saves. Rest of the 1st half was pretty even then they scored again just before HT, very good move coupled with awful defending. Spartans had 2 glorious chances at the start of the 2nd half. A miscontrol by the keeper presented a chance that was easier to score than miss but somehow the ball ended up scuffed right into the keepers hands. Couple of minutes later a 1v1 saw the keeper commit and with the whole goal to aim at the Spartans striker somehow managed to find the post. Rose got a 3rd from another cross into the box. The 4th was a great strike, cut back from a corner and drilled right into the bottom corner from 20 yards or so. Spartans scored a late consolation then actually had another 2 or 3 half chances in injury time but Rose were well worthy winners.

Considering both teams were missing regular starters it was a decent game and a good advert for the Lowland Legaue.

Just back from the fantastically named Humbug Park watching Crossgates Primrose playing Penicuik Athletic in a League Cup tie.

£6 to get in, Crossgates were 2 up at half time, Penicuik scored 3 goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half, Crossgates equalised with a great free kick a few minutes from the end then won it 2 minutes from the end of extra time.

Good entertainment, both teams went forward for the full match and we had the bonus of watching one of the linesman struggling to get back up after tying his laces only to fall on his arse.

Proper football helped by about 20 ‘ultras’ whose average age was probably about 12 making a decent racket.

Friday- Oval cricket ground 20/20 cricket game, really nice but had without doubt one of the worst pints of beer ever.

Saturday - Lords cricket ground. No game but I blagged my way in through security who showed us around. Spot on.

- Tottenham Stadium. WOW. What a ground top 3 defo. Ended up in expensive seats but wow it was amazing. Half way line and very posh inside. Padded seats etc. £70.00 class afternoon. Only downside and it's small annoyance is transport links back to central London is slow. Rugby league final.

Sunday- Wembley play off final. Been to Wembley a few times but completed every side by going behind the east side goal.

Nothing too glamerous for me, went to the Falkirk stadium to watch a possible league winning performance from Syngenta amateurs vs Pumpherston. 7-0 for Syngenta but WHitburn won their match 12-0 to take the title on goal difference.

Got to give the stadium announcer and game organisers great credit, free flags for the kids, free entry for everyone, music blaring after every goal, scorers names read out, just a good family type atmosphere for the approx 300 folk there.

Oh and 2 sendings off and 7 bookings!

Yes definitely the same site at York, though completely unrecognisable now. I quite liked it when I went there in February watching Leigh. First time I've had a post-match pint in a mini golf centre (actually built in to the interior of the stands) but they had different beers between the ground floor and first floor which was a nice quirk.

Scarborough's new gaff wasn't up to much when I went a couple of years ago but they've built a new touchline stands since then. I was actually supposed to go to what turned out to be the last ever game at the McCain Stadium (Scarboroough Mk I v Leigh RMI) but my car broke down near Leeds and we ended up spending the afternoon watching Sky Sports News in the pub!

Didn't do your research, did you?

We didn't exactly rush straight off after the Wigan-Huddersfield game; left the ground at probably dead on 5 and we were back in the Euston Flyer for 5.45 so not bad at all (we went to Northumberland Park station and got a train to Tottenham Hale so that we were already on the Victoria line before it reached Seven Sisters where we assumed everyone would be queuing)

No we did White Hart Lane overground straight to Liverpool Street (I think) then straight tube back to hotel.

Quickest route for us in terms of changes. Issue was queue into the station. They should stick more trains on at 5pm on a matchday.

Overground is usually like that. Northumberland Park had trains literally every couple of minutes (think they went to Liverpool Street as well as it happens, but because it doesn’t show up on Google Maps people didn’t know to use it)

Overground is usually like that. Northumberland Park had trains literally every couple of minutes (think they went to Liverpool Street as well as it happens, but because it doesn’t show up on Google Maps people didn’t know to use it)

I was with a lad who tries to walk the least amount of distance so was no way he was walking 13 minutes 😁

I went to Eastwood Town on Saturday.

Pre-season friendly.

Nice little ground outside of Nottingham.

I was impressed with thier keeper. Looked about 20. Impressed me almost as much as that Huddersfield keeper v our B team prior to covid.

I reckon he should be at a way higher level the eastwood keeper.

Game finished 4-2. Excellent value for 5.00.

I was at Livi v Morton the other day. Livi conceded 3 of the worst goals I've ever seen in my life. First one their CB passed into his own net, second one Stryek was took an age to clear and was charged down and the third Stryjek passed it straight to one of their attacking players. Livi looked pretty blunt.

All weather. Looks a nice wee set up.

Fingers crossed Hibs move there. I've taken my daughter to a couple of games at Livi and she loves it, probably more than the men's games, because the players come and chat to the fans for ages, pose for pictures etc. I'd take her to a lot more games if they were local.

Back into football mode in the coming week (as if i was ever out of it!!).
Travelling up for the Clyde game on saturday and then taking in Matlock Town entertaining league two mansfield Town on tuesday evening. Towards the end of the month Chesterfield are hosting a friendly between Marseille and Real Betis, well it would be rude not to go.

Great wee setup at Glebe Park. Really enjoyed my visit. Not much of a warm up for the Dons as they won without getting out of first gear. Lovely night for a game of football

Pies are outstanding at Matlock. If it's a clear night then it's one of the most scenic grounds around.

Heading along to Meadowbank today to see the game against Arbroath out of curiosity about the new ground. I have absolutely zero affinity with Edinburgh City or whatever they are called, hope Jack Brydon and Liam are playing though.

The stand looks like it has just 3 (yes 3!) rows stretching the length of the pitch. Considering there is a running track and I believe a long jump pit between the stand and pitch I am expecting the viewing to be awful, but we shall see.

Have you got a ticket? Just seem on their twitter that it’s a sell-out.

Yeah, got them earlier in the week. It only just sold out yesterday, which bearing in mind the capacity of 499 and that there will be some Arbroath fans, it’s not caught the imagination of locals to much extent.

Edinburgh v Arbroath today.

Decent enough game, comfortable win for Arbroath in the end who played some good stuff.

New Meadowbank is simply not a football stadium as it stands and not even passable even with football being a secondary consideration. A leisure centre with a few seats tacked on. They need to get another stand or terracing built asap.

Think a terrace on the far side is the plan - and indeed has to be to meet SPFL minimum standards - but in reality it’s just not happening, is it?

We got there early and got in the back row (of 3 rows!), the view wasn’t as bad as I feared, but it’s really not great for football. On a beautiful day it felt pleasant enough for the novelty factor.

Arbroath were very impressive when they got going, which coincided with Nicky Low coming on in the first half, a very good player at that level, absolutely owned the midfield.

One thing that must be alarming for the home team’s officials is that I estimate that Arbroath must have made up about two thirds of the crowd, which for their first game when tickets were on sale and available to anyone for a good number of days doesn’t bode well.

We were in the 2nd row but swapped with a couple of kids who couldn't see over the barrier from the front row. I see it's been confirmed on Twitter the barrier is going to be lowered.

It's just going to be impossible to get any atmosphere at all going there. I wonder if they could even get some temporary fencing behind one of the goals and create a standing area in the high jump area. Edinburgh Rugby used to have pitch side standing when they were at Murrayfield and it was pretty decent.

The chairman’s notes in the programme said there will be a standing area in place by the first home league game with Dunfermline on 6 August. I admire his confidence, a rudimentary structure might be possible in that time, but I doubt it will offer great viewing either.

I agree, it will be difficult to ever generate any atmosphere in the place.

Cove v Livi today. First ever visit, I don't like plastic pitches but it didn't spoil the football. £10 was a great price considering it was v a Prem club. Balmoral pies were decent and a decent view gained from the stand. There's 3 tiny shelters opposite but everything else is standing round a flat perimeter.

Cove played some good stuff similar style to Arbroath whom I saw earlier this week. They really should have got a point today after Goncalves stupid sending off for violent conduct off the ball.

Omeonga played a sweet ball through for a well taken winner.

Stranraer, Peterhead, Arbroath & now Cove done 15 goals and 3 good games (Peterhead's was a bit dull) is not a bad haul.

East Kilbride are a decent side. Probably not the side they were 2 or 3 seasons ago but they won the League Cup last year and finished 4th in the league. Not seen much of Tranent but they won a decent East of Scotland league to get promoted last year so should slot in fairly well.

Reckon it will be a decent crowd with it being the 1st game of the season so well worth a look.
