Thought I’d ask on this thread as it relates to protests but does the new policing bill which almost bans protests apply to Scotland as well?

Would you feel the same if a pissed off commuter beat up a striking train driver next month?
No because I agree with scotrail workers right to hold a legal strike, they’re also not stopping people get around as there’s an alternative to the train. Also I wasn’t condoning her behaviour, but I understand how her and the other people I saw n videos felt and I certainly didn’t say I was condoning anyone being beat up, I said I thought it was inevitable.

Seeing that daft woman with her stupidly unnecessary car behaving like that probably make me feel more sympathy for the protestors if anything.
Would it make a difference if she was driving a Renault Clio?

To me? Probably.
I detest those big fashion accessory Range Rovers. Horrible, polluting, obstructive monstrosities that are completely unnecessary in an urban setting.

In many ways, the protestors couldn't have asked for a better adversary than a Range Rover driver. It kinda encapsulates much of their argument.

Yes. There would then have been a chance that by using forward and reverse gears she could have turned the car round and found an alternative route, instead of risking a heart attack because her son would be late for school.

By using alternative measures the protesters could make their point without pissing so many people off. So many people who agree with the cause they’re fighting for are being turned in the other direction by these people. What they’re doing is counterproductive.

The other direction? Presumably people are not removing insulation from their homes because they're late for work. What are they being turned towards?

I see it has now been confirmed that Putin will not be attending.
With Xi Jinping also expected not to attend it's 2 gaping holes in the guest list.
It's already feeling a bit like something that will see a lot of talk, a lot of promises, a few countries who will implement some half measures, some who will award contracts for their mates but deliver nowt (I'm looking at you Boris) and some who won't even pretend they are going to do anything at all.
Meanwhile billionaires will continue their dick measuring contests firing rockets into space for other billionaires and millionaires to ride on, the UK will plough ahead with it's current fossil fuel extraction plans until at least the 2030s, plenty other countries will do likewise and we'll be hearing in another 10 years how we are really definitely going to do something this time.
The apathy around this from so much of the public is baffling. It's literally our children and grandchildren's lives on the line and the pressure on the powers that be seems largely non existent.

You have always been quite vehemently opposed to Uber. Do you feel the same way about your fellow taxi drivers who blocked roads in protest at Uber as you do about environmental protesters blocking roads?
Do you feel the protests by taxi drivers helped further their cause or turned people against them?
Do you think it would have been understandable if a member of the public who was inconvenienced by taxi drivers blocking roads, took matters into their own hands and physically assaulted a taxi driver?

Taxi drivers in Edinburgh have never blocked the roads in protest against Uber.

At risk of alienating many of the posters on this site with a sweeping and inaccurate generalisation...
We've got issues with the older half of our population, their priorities and the political choices they make. They're the ones most likely to have wealth, influence or be arsed to go and vote to get their own way.
Most of them couldn't give a f***. They're too old to change their habits or their minds. They normally profess to love their kids and grandkids but their actions generally suggest the very opposite. They're looking after themselves.
We also have an issue with the younger half of the population, those who meekly accept the continuation of the current situation. It's easy to point, or to moan and do nothing. Rather than half arsed protests where folk sit on the road, I'm surprised there isn't more anger at the situations being forced upon the youth of today. A bit of the old civil disobedience is long overdue in my opinion (short of murdering MPs right enough).
I guess the challenge for those of us who are at different stages between being young and old is that we don't just turn into our parents and adopt their position.

You know exactly what I mean. There will be people who are pretty indifferent when it comes to environmental issues and will associate anything to do with the environment with protesters blocking the roads. At the end of the day everyone in this country will be forced through legislation to reduce their carbon footprint, electric cars will be the only option, gas boilers will be banned, electricity will come from renewable sources and none of that has been achieved by people sitting in roads blocking traffic. People like Greta Thunberg and children leaving classes and coming out to protest have a much bigger impact than rent a mobs travelling anywhere they’re needed to disrupt our daly lives.

I never said they have but taxi drivers in other parts of the UK did. The incident being discussed with the environmental protestor being run over didn’t occur in Edinburgh either for what it’s worth.
Any chance you can answer the questions I’ve asked?

The taxi drivers in London had permission for an organised protest, everyone knew they were doing it and had an opportunity to make alternative arrangements. Their protest wasn’t something I agreed with at the time and I still don’t. I think that answers your questions.

Think you might be extrapolating your own position (long-time professional driver) to far more people than is warranted. Many people won't give a stuff about Greta Thunberg but if they can't, say, get their child to school on time and fly into a rage and are maybe later forced to answer questions from that same child like "Why is my being on time for school more important than the physical safety of those strange people that you drove into, mummy?" they'll have taken notice all right.
And all the current chat about protesters provoking rage in drivers and turning the public against them fails to take account of the fact that the proportion of drivers who are videoed raging might not be any higher than the proportion of drivers out there who seem to be permanently raging anyway, about something or other (or nothing at all). The protesters have maybe just brought them out of the safety of their cars and on to our screens.

I see road range driver has been quick of the mark and sold her story to the papers, she’s really a nice person an lost it a wee bit when her lovely son couldn’t get to school, “that’s the one who is screaming abuse from passenger window” she didn’t mean to hurt anyone but was just angry about her son being late for school, if that’s what’s she is like for something trivial then how angry does she get then there is no parking place at private school for son.
She shouldn’t have got involved but she did and no doubt will get a visit from her local polis.

If she's anything like the Range Rover drivers at my daughters school she probably just parks on the double yellow lines or zig zags whilst everyone else sticks to the rules......

She should be banned from driving and up in court. The whole two wrongs don't make a right thing. Just cos someones blocking traffic who's actions you don't agree with, its mental people things it ok to drive a 2 ton vehicle into them. Alert the polis, text your boss/school/partner/whatever, sit tight and wait for the authorities to deal with it.
Her reaction, considering her child is in the car is appalling. Great example to set.

My own position is that we need to do more to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, governments need to stop pretending that they’re leading the way, when leading the way is equivalent of being the last man standing after a 3 day bender. Technology and innovation is the best way out of this and it could happen in half or more of the time being predicted by current methods. Look at how quickly a vaccine was produced when money and resources weren’t an issue.
This has been my position long before anyone started blocking roads.

You've possibly answered this previously, but what's your plan for getting governments to change? Steve Bray shouted at them (is possibly still shouting at them) outside Westminster that Brexit was a bad idea, but I don't think he had any effect other than to make them try to bring in a bill to make it illegal to shout outside parliament.

Civil disobedience. Occupying parliament and other government buildings as well as council offices. It has to be a coordinated campaign across Europe though.

Absolute ******** behaviour.
It seems that violence against these protesters has been deemed fair game though and it's only going to get worse as the gutter press continue to hail the type of people that use their cars as weapons as heroes.

Absolutely cowardly. He will throw ink into the faces of a priest and a retired doctor; people he knows won't fight back. If those protesters were guys from a local building site, he wouldn't have been there with his ink.
