Outstanding to a man. Every single player stood up and was counted.
Gilmour, McGinn, Robertson et al will make the headlines but I thought Hanley was a colossus at the back tonight. Old fashioned Centre half performance.
We have kept ourselves well and truly alive in this group and for all the criticism aimed at Clarke and the team on Monday they praise should be just as forthcoming and just as deserved.

Southgate doesn't seem to get the best out of what he has. Souness was very critical of Rice and Phillips in there while saying we had good footballers in midfield. Southgate is too conservative and risk averse.

The ITV twat of a commentator, getting frustrated because his team weren’t strolling away with it, comes out with “Scotland are the third lowest ranking team in the tournament…… what does that say for us?” The English media turn turn quickly their own.
As usual, media and particularly those that know F all about football have built this England team up to be world beaters in their own minds. Tonight showed (yet again) they are a very average side with a couple of great players - when they can be arsed.
England - not as good as they think. Scotland - better than others think. Well done all the boys.

Even if we go out we have at least shown we can compete at this level. That tonight wasn't just a backs to the wall, park the bus and pray performance.
We played some good stuff and didn't look at all out of place. OK a game where we now have to to and win against Croatia might be a bit different but after Monday it would have been easy to roll over and accept another 2-0 defeat as 'no bad'.
We are a couple or players in key positions away from being a really good side but there was and is plenty to like about this Scotland team. A shot in the arm just when it was needed and set up nicely for glorious failure on Tuesday......
PB come on man!! Need to grow from that performance, a brilliant chance to qualify against a decent team who cleary arent what they used to be and are certainly no better than England who Scotland have just put a great performance in against. England havent beome crap overnight, we have a good team and tonight we couldnt play at all against a vibrant Scotland team. Great draw recently against Holland and a great performance and result against England, these teams arent crap teams, they are amongst the best in Europe and Scotland have been right up there competing against them.

Yup. Let's be honest, we are one of the weakest teams in the tournament. The Czechs put 2 past us but a team with a strike force (Kane, Sancho, Rashford, Sterling) worth north of £300m had their best chance from a corner.

They were saying that England didn't necessarily have a bad game, but that Scotland got it right to stop them playing while maybe doing enough to steal it.

Yep.
A few people had written him off because of his injury issues and because of the usual suspicions that a good young player at one of the Glasgow 2 is overhyped.
He is outstanding though. Not only a great player but his attitude is second to none as well. I was always confident he would do well down south and £25M looks like a bargain for Arsenal in a footballing context. They will sell him for more far than that as and when he moves on.

It’s pleasing that even as the England squad fills up with players of genuine quality, they still aren’t going to win a damn thing.
Also for all the praise he gets, Southgate seems no different to a lot of recent England managers, picking the big names regardless of form. Kane wandering around half fit, how many more goals does Sancho need to score to get on the pitch, or is it just the move to United that needs to happen first?
Thought we did well, though the constant aerial balls, either from Marshall or into the box was frustrating. Particularly in defence, England had a size advantage, I think they’d have been much more vulnerable running at them, and taking more shots at an at times suspect keeper could well have got us a win.
Can’t complain though, just a shame this team weren’t there on Monday. Let’s hope for a similar performance next week.

I think England are a decent side and it took a great Scottish performance to keep them at bay.
Portugal won the last tournament after drawing all their group games last time. No team plays at the peak of their powers for 90 minutes every game and that was a tough game for England tonight on several levels. They didn’t lose and the point there might actually end up being invaluable.
It was also the type of performance that shows up weakness and gives them stuff to work on. In the past they’ve played well early on in tournaments and lost out the first time they’ve played anyone of substance.
Whilst they didn’t score tonight, I still think they’re a very dangerous side going forward and they have bags of quality. I had the fear every time they came forward and think it was a great result for Scotland to get the point.

Just watching the highlights. There's some dodgy haircuts in that England team.
Kelvin Phillips wins hands down.
Those cornrow bunches man!
WTF?

He's a phenomenal player, but you can't simply disregard his injury issues. He's not available for selection often enough for club or country.
:agree:
I don’t think his ability has ever been in question really.
He’s missed a huge amount of games in his career so far though. Just being really good doesn’t change that.
Unless he gets over those issues I don’t see him getting a bigger move. Whilst he’s good, I don’t see him as being that good that the real big teams will be willing to accept the fact he averages 23 league games out of 38 each season.

Thought we played excellent, tactics spot on. We do however lack a real quality striker. Add a £40-50mil forward and play like that and we will win more games than we lose, unfortunately they don’t grow on trees.

I was very surprised by how well we played.
Better team on the night and adds to the frustration on Monday. If we’d won that we’d be as good as through.
Winnable game v Croatia though imo.

Southgate always comes across as a decent person but I've never been convinced about him as a manager. He really should be getting more from what is a talented group of players.
Having watched the game again in a relaxed frame of mind, Steve Clark completely outthought him and neither he nor his backroom team seemed to know how to change things.
Will be a different game on Tuesday. We won't be able to play the same counter attacking style, have we the strength and ability to take the game to Croatia? ALL we asked for last night was to have a chance still on Tuesday and boy how our team delivered that.
But why do I keep thinking that with moments to go we'll be qualifying until either England or the Czechs do something to put us out? But that's my last negative thought for 4 days!

I was disappointed we didn’t win last night, but this morning I’m more than happy with the point. I do however remember 98 when all we had to do was beat Morocco, which at the time didn’t seam all that hard a task.
Or worse in 96 when all we needed was a second goal against the Swiss (which we would have had if goal line tech was around back then)

I’m still proud at the performance, but in the cold light of day 1 point is a disappointing return. We need to find a way to start taking the chances that are been created (usually from the flanks). Saying that, a tight disciplined structure is probably still the best way to get a result against Croatia, so I don’t think changing tactics is on the cards, just keep playing the way we have been and hope for some luck in front of goal for once. Maybe introduce Kevin on 60 instead of 80 minutes if we need a goal.

We've got the core of a good team but are still a few players short of being a good team. Glad the manager gave some of the new guys a chance tonight, he got the team and tactics spot on.
Aye you’re spot on - but yon guy (Jambo f*d on the radio)who thought that Anti Niemi (sp?) was Scottish will be on soon telling Clarke to get his cheque book out and get signing a few new players 😂

Tactics were spot on. Phillips was their main driver in the first game, never got a touch, and we kept Sterling quiet, apart from his wee mazy near the end. Every Scot gave their all last night, and we've found a wee diamond in Gilmour.
Onwards to Tuesday, let's build on this, and give it a go.

It was a great feeling to have a real connection with a Scotland team again. I’d kinda lost it. Not sure if it’s because we stopped getting the chance to play proper big games or what. Last night for the 2nd half i couldn’t sit down, pacing about and kicking every ball with them. Great performance that just needed a goal. Can’t remember enjoying a 0-0 so much before.

Great performance from the boys, we have the nucleus of a very decent side, solid at the back and a very good midfield. Could do with another forward coming through from somewhere, but we have something to build on here for the future.
I have to say though again, what a player Tierney is, he's up there with the best in the world in his position, and he is that good in two positions.:top marks
John McGinn was back to his very best too last night, after a howler on Monday. :top marks
Billy Gilmour looks another who has it all, although it is still early days with him he does look a very good player.
We might be going home after the Croatia game, but the future is looking much brighter for us now.

Am I missing something about how many points we need? People keep saying that point keeps us in it but to me it makes little difference (other than the mental boost from a brilliant result).
Even if we lost today we can still probably make it through in 3rd with 3 points, it was always going to come down to the Croatia game after they drew with the Czechs today. Is it just because we now still have a very slim chance of coming 2nd?

Is it just because we now still have a very slim chance of coming 2nd?With 3 points we would perhaps need a pretty decent goal difference, and it's unlikely for us even to have a positive one. Having 4 points pretty much takes that out the equation.

hope wee Modric has a niggly injury for tuesday :greengrin
Watched the Croatia game before ours and thought it was one of the quietest games he will have. They will be hard to beat no doubt but definitely got a chance.

Solid display.
Not enough though as England and Czech Rep will “fix a boring 0-0 draw” so that they each have 5pts and go thorough.

Outrage after ‘Anti English rhetoric’ clearly visible on Scottish teams football fans message board during Scotland England game.
I’m quite frankly shocked.

You do know that four of the best third place teams also qualify. Four points should be enough.

Yes. Not sure of the criteria used to select which teams with four points will qualify. Only the best three third places go through.

Im sure its the best 4 third placed teams. 6 groups, top 2 through is 12 teams plus 4 best third placed makes 16

No, it’s the best 4. And because head to head won’t be a factor, goal difference is the tiebreaker if the 3rd place teams are on the same points.

It was a good performance and England were lucky to get a draw. Agreed we lack firepower up front to make that step up. I’d like to see Nisbet get more of a run out and also some other strikers get a try out.

4 out of the 6 groups third places go through will be almost certain 4 points will be enough for us to qualify.

No, it's four best third place finishers. Six group winners, six runner-ups, plus four best third place teams giving us a last sixteen.
In Group B, should Belgium beat Finland then the latter will only be on three points. In the other game, it's Denmark (0) against Russia (3), so only one of those teams can qualify. If Belgium and Denmark win, then even the 2nd place team qualifies on 3 points.
In Group A, only a Swiss win (against Turkey) will put the third place team on four points.
In Group C, as long as there is a winner in the Austria v Ukraine game, then the third place team will only have three points.
In Group F, if France and Portugal both win against Hungary and Germany respectively, then the third place team can't get four points.
In Group E, it's still too early to call but wins for Spain against Poland and Slovakia means the third place team can't get four points.
Four points will be enough, but obviously not 100% confirmed yet.

Great summary. My only addition would be group a - the Swiss might fancy a win versus poor Turkey team but they start on -3 goal difference and we start on -2. Assuming in the scenarios we win by one goal we would move to -1 so the Swiss need to win by at least 2 maybe 3 depending on goals scored.
