Apparently since they wrote "everyone at Hibernian", and if we the fans aren't included in that sentiment then they can bear that in mind the next time they make an "inclusive" video that flogs season tickets for £400.

Just catching up on this wonderful thread. Some cracking posts but this one is right near the top of the chart. Made me chuckle. The outrage from some folk in response to the club’s tweet is quite astounding.

Unfortunately we have no one left at the club who understands Hibs and their fans, all moved on
Had a quick look at the Twitter feedback, and there are a lot of good Hibs supports that I know, not very happy

Ron if you’re looking in, this and the David Tanner saga on Hibs pass, hasn’t gone down well with our support, get it sorted

Twitter is a barometer of bampottery. Nothing else.

I dont believe he was a racist although he did make some racist comments. To be honest it would be hard to find many 99yo that hadnt done so. Even though I am half his age I said things in the past that embarrass me now.

I think this is fair comment. My grandad said what would now be considered deeply offensive racist things on a regular basis. We really are a product of the times we live in. I don’t think there’s any validity in trying to pretend Philip making fun of a shanty eyed Chinaman is comparable to someone born in the1980s doing the same. It doesn’t make it ok but the world changes.

Every single BBC channel has been hijacked for the Phil The Greek tribute (strangely enough, even BBC Alba).

Yes, the BBC is in a time warp. A dinosaur broadcaster which is more aligned with public opinion in the 1950s than the 2020s. Complete nonsense to hijack all their channels and akin to what you would expect from the North Korean state broadcaster.

An old guy has passed on and it will be a sad day for his family for sure. Just like it will have been for the families of the ~130,000 who have passed over the last year due to the pandemic.

I don't understand therefore, why the passing of one person should result in mass hysteria across the media. For similar reasons I am surprised that any Scottish football club (apart from the Rangers) felt the need to issue a statement today. Although I'm not particularly bothered that Hibs did, I find the content of the tweet bizarre; it would appear to have been written by a fanatical Royalist.

As the national broadcaster, the BBC is still the the place most people go to during moments of national importance, so I understand they have to fill the role expected of them. Yes it's stuffy and very middle England, but much of middle England thinks the Beeb is full of commies, which probably means they are striking the right balance. However, the monarchy just isn't as important as it once was, so their coverage does look OTT. I would prefer to end the deference completely and not be hung up about people whose only qualification is accident of birth.

I think the tweet, while certainly not offensive to me, was misjudged by Hibs. I’m sure they are probably in hindsight aware of that and if they could go back to this morning probably wouldn’t do it again.

as many have said, an institution that crystallises and symbolises a class system and inherited privilege will always be divisive. The man’s oft repeated racist remarks do not come across well at a time when the game is struggling so intensely to combat racism in all forms. Add to that Hibernian Football Club’s historically anti-Establishment leanings and I think it just wasn’t a good idea. No one else in the top league felt the need to do it outside of you know who and if there was to be one other club to join Rangers it shouldn’t have been us.

I’m no royalist, nor am I a republican, I have no issue with anyone, including Hibs, expressing condolences.

as you put it very well, it’s the decent thing to do. I would have no issue with anyone’s passing being treated similarly

That's part of the issue, almost no one else's passing will be treated similarly, they are better than us and it's always good to get a reminder

The man died, our club felt it would be the decent thing to tweet their condolences.

It is the decent thing to do, whatever anyones views on the royal family.

Where do you end with that then?

There are plenty of good Hibs men and women who’ve passed on without condolences being tweeted out by the club, particularly not in such glowing terms. It’s a bad tweet with tone deaf phrasing that does not reflect the views of a large % of our support, can we just admit and move on?

Bbc, itv and channel 4 coverage was like I imagine it would be in North Korea. Same stuff on all channels, no choice. BBC 4 was a black screen with a message to switch to BBC1 for a major news report.

The media is either overestimating how much the public cares or are out-competing each other in sycophancy so they can get a gong.

Support for the monarchy tends to always poll safely towards favourable. Then that majority will be more likely to seek out and watch the programming compared to those who don't care so they're probably doing a good job of catering for their audience.

The BBC, ITV et al are driven by viewing figures. This will be getting huge figures. There's probably 3 reasons for that. People who are genuinely interested, people who are largely disinterested but have the TV on in the background and finally people who are disinterested but continue to tune in to fuel their own ire and then be indignant about the coverage on social media. I daresay something like that existed in the past but the platform it now has gives it a scale that makes it quite a new phenomenon.

I said yesterday that the media coverage will follow a similar pattern to the death of the Queen Mother. The day of the death and much of the day after is saturation. Then normal programming will resume with it still being the main item on the news, then a bit more saturation for the funeral then very little until the Queens 1st engagement afterwards.

The fact is after a while there is just nothing more to say when someone dies at an old age of natural causes. There's no accident and young age angle as there was with Diana. It was an entirely expected event and as the news repeats for the 100th time the viewing figures will dwindle.

I'm sure there are a limited number of people who have no access to other forms of media but if you wanted to watch the Hearts game yesterday, you could. If you wanted to watch the Masters, you could. If you wanted to watch the racing, you could. If you were inconvenienced by the media saturation then frankly you made a wilful decision to be so. I watched 5 minutes news on TV yesterday, read other news articles that interested me on various sites, watched the racing all day, watched a bit golf last night then cracked open a few cans and watched a film. Had I missed the lunchtime news and not logged on to here or Twitter I'd say it was highly likely I could have been unaware the death had even occurred. Once I was aware of the news after a cursory few minutes it was perfectly easy to avoid hearing any more about it.

As for Hibs tweet. I do find it a bit bizarre that we put something out when few other clubs felt the need to do so. I can only imagine the Edinburgh connection has been at the forefront of someone's mind. I can't say I'm embarrassed by it though. I don't even understand what form that embarrassment takes. Are people scared they will be getting a slagging at their work or something? Or are you just sitting in your house squirming? I'd say I'm a tad bewildered and I wouldn't have noticed or cared if Hibs didn't put a tweet out. They did, it's now yesterday's news. If people move on then it ceases to be relevant because no one will be talking about it.

I think the point is largely no one would have cared if we didn’t. Very few football clubs have.

Think it was just poorly judged. They should have known it would be pretty divisive and doing nothing would have been the more sensible option.

Having decided to do it they’ve also gone a bit OTT on the wording.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Ron thought it would be a great idea to link the Edinburgh piece. Being based in the US he possibly thinks like they tend to do there that we love that stuff.

You do realise that those who keep bringing up his perceived racism, are every bit as intolerant as they accuse him of being.

In 1986, while on a visit to China, Philip described Beijing as "ghastly." He also told British students: "If you stay here much longer you'll all be slitty-eyed."
In 1994, he asked residents of the Cayman Islands if most of them were "descended from pirates" and in 2002 he asked an aboriginal leader in Queensland: "Do you still throw spears at each other?"

It's not an accusation. He is a racist.

If I died tomorrow I seriously hope the entirety of my life wouldn't be judged on either the worst or best thing I had ever done. It would paint such an incomplete picture of who I was as a person.

For a very small percentage of people there is little option but to do so. No one is going to retrospectively revisit Harold Shipman because he done his bit for the local Rotary Club. However for most of us things are a bit more nuanced.

The man lived for almost 100 years, humans are complex. I don't think his entire life can be summed up as either 'privileged old racist' or 'dutiful public servant and serviceman'. As with most things the truth isn't black and white (no pun intended).

I believe they're renaming even more streets in Edinburgh to 'Mountbatten (Terrace/Junction/Place)' in his honour.

They were going to use the original name, Battenberg*, but some folk still haven't got over the First World War, so it's unlikely to be accepted

* The family name actually was Battenberg (Mount Batten is the literal English translation), but they changed it due to anti-German sentiment in WWI... just as Windsor replaced the royal family name of Saxe-Coburg.

I was sitting in an Irish bar in Liverpool when the queen mother died and can confirm she was not mourned there!

Somewhere between 41 and 53% support the monarchy in Scotland depending on what poll you believe.

The most recent I can find are from 2018 though. I daresay there has been a shift one way or another as we have become increasingly polarised constitutionally and politically.

I was sitting in an Irish bar in Liverpool when the queen mother died and can confirm she was not mourned there! It's usually about 40% in favour of royal family in Scotland as a whole, from memory.
If you take out rangers, hearts, airdrie and Hibs it's probably about 15% :greengrin

I know it's for the UK but the poster I quoted wasn't talking specifically about the media in Scotland, it was as a whole.

In terms of Scotland, whilst clearly the monarchy unsurprisingly enjoys most support in England, support in Scotland is consistently around 50%.

I really don't think comments on a predominantly left wing football forum is the best way to measure support for the monarchy in Scotland.

So not really a massive shift in 3 years then. I suppose that makes sense as I doubt the monarchy is a massively pressing concern for many people in the short to medium term.

I'd probably be more inclined to get behind the SNPs vision for independence if they committed to a Scottish republic. I'm sure there is a reason why they haven't done that though.

Getting shot of Betty Battenburg and her motley crew of scroungers as well as independence would be too much for some in one go. It would scare off some of those who would vote for independence.

There will be a referendum on royal family post independence.

They're definitely not overestimating it at all. There's still overwhelming support for the monarchy in the UK. Consistent polling shows that abolition of the monarchy is supported by less than 30% of people.

That is a pretty weird stat. Hard to believe that normal folk under 70 would think the monarchy is relevant.
The eventual passing of the Queen or Prince Charles should probably be the end of it.
It's run it's course.
Everything has a shelf life and the monarchy is nearing the end of it's.
A tourist attraction for many years and interesting to old women.

I find it strange how much annoyance is directed at them though when it's the public schools system working class folk should be aiming their anger at and having dismantled.

Think they know there's a Royalist support even amongst a minority of pro-Indy folk & they don't want to alienate anyone who has a vote to cast. They've been around a long time and folk have got very used

I think the 2021 ~40% (50/50 excl DK) figure was taken from these stats which was based on whether the royals would continue in an indy Scotland (not sure how much that question would result in a different % compared to general support for the royals within Scotland as things stand).

Yes voters were at 30% to maintain the monarchy, 56% for republic.
No voters were 54% to maintain the monarchy, 22% for republic.

"A survey commissioned by Sky News found that 39% of voters would support the Royal Family retaining their traditional role if the UK was break-up, while 39% said a Scottish republic should be created and 22% said they didn't know.

Support for the Queen and her successors is highest amongst those who would no at any future IndyRef2, with 54% saying they backed the monarchy, 22% in favour of a republic, and 24% being undecided.

The idea of creating a republic north of the Border is meanwhile supported by 56% of Yes voters, with 30% backing the monarchy and 15% saying they don't know."

Same for me, they make no difference to my life in a positive or negative way. The only thing I would add is I would be happier with them retaining their status if they were less dependant on the State for funding, they do have enough money of their own. As for the OP's point on Public Schools, I have no problem with any person opting to choose that over State schools, they pay their taxes which contribute towards State Education and they get nothing back from that system.

I would rather have a Queen or King as figureheads but with little power before a dictator who demands obedience at all times. Megan Markle did a runner as soon as she realised she was going to have no power. The Queen is a ruler in name only doing what her Government wants done.

Totally, this is the guy that was willing to lay his life on the line with many others of his generation to fight fascism and protect our freedoms, he also, along with a foreign Jew created and drove the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme which has helped put the City's name into peoples minds across the world.

He's getting pulled up for being racist, it's not like he went about daily spouting bile, he didn't... there's a reason his utterances are regularly called "gaffes", he would occasionally came out with something cringeworthy or would say some politically incorrect joke (he's have done well on this board) ... he was a child of his age, the things he said were the norm back then, over the years he was less prone to the odd gaffe, that was because he was learning and changing his speech like most, if not all of his generation.

On the same, but different note... I'm 56, when I was at Broughton one of my pals mentioned our new school mate some of us were still to meet, calling him black when describing what he was like. He was overheard by a teacher and the 4 of us got the belt for it, that name was unacceptable, apparently we should have used the word "coloured"
Now a days folk lose their jobs for using the words they were taught as kids.

She was a remarkable woman, who worked for Red Cross and handed out food parcels, fought off eminent men who told her she was mentally ill, left a sanitarium, raised money for the poor and generally lived her life how she wanted, I am fascinated by her.See less

The less racists in the world the better, society is a much better place without him.

The fact Scottish football is affected by this is archaic and laughable, going to paste a post from pie and Bovril that words the situation much better than I possibly can below.

I see the usual sycophantic twats are giving it "All those saying they don't care sure seem to care!"
Well, I don't care that he's dead. I don't care that people are sad about it. What I do care about is that, for me and everyone else I know that's ever lost a parent or partner, the first few days are taken up with sitting in a GP's waiting room for a death certificate, taking it to the register office, going to the funeral directors, checking insurances and bank accounts to make sure you can pay for what's coming next, booking and paying for a reception, contacting dozens of people to let them know and doing a hundred other chores. If you're poor it means doing these things without a car and at a cost to yourself that you can ill afford. You'll probably need to squeeze it in among work and other responsibilities, like looking after your children. It often involves cancelling benefits (they will absolutely come for you if you don't), clearing out a room in a care home or sheltered housing and making arrangements for other elderly relatives to get cared for.
These privileged, pampered, self-indulgent b*****ds will get all of this provided for them, and more, entirely at the expense of everyone else in the UK, including people who rely on food banks to feed their families. They have a standing army of flunkies who will take care of every last detail so that they can sit around with the grief - a luxury that none of the rest of us get to experience.
Did you know that you pay for someone to follow Prince Charles around wherever her goes carrying a red velvet cushion, which he uses whenever he sits down?
I have no sympathy and no respect for any of them or their servile subjects.
So what I'm here for is the memes and the jokes, because if we can't beat these bootlicking p***ks we might as well laugh at them.

You have no sympathy for someone because they have staff to help get a funeral organised or because they have money, I get that people don't think we should have a royal family but out of all the reason not to feel sympathetic towards someone losing a family member you could have picked something that makes you sound less of a twat

I met Prince Charles when he made a private visit to a building I was working on near Braemar. He drove himself and was accompanied by 2-3 bodyguards.

There wasn't a red velvet cushion in sight (I think someone's having you on!).

Bbc, itv and channel 4 coverage was like I imagine it would be in North Korea. Same stuff on all channels, no choice. BBC 4 was a black screen with a message to switch to BBC1 for a major news report.

Yes this was weird thing they didn't need blanket coverage. On Friday night I switched on to BBC 1 at 5 to 10 and a montage of photos was running then the 10 news came on same photos running at the start and huw Edwards opening lines sounding as as if it was breaking news of his passing no acknowledgement of the fact they'd been running the story blanket since 12 that morning.

From the feedback I've been reading and hearing from people of all backgrounds it seemed to mostly work.

Imo because they live in a bubble immune from the realities of "normal" life. Public schools, Oxbridge, cocooned in a world that existed 75 years ago, military contexts, Queen and Country etc.

The rest of us are binge watching soaps, Ant & Dec, shopping in Aldi and most generally trying to make ends meet.

My granny would have been all over the coverage 40 years ago. But people and Britain have largely moved on from the post war connection with the Royal Family.

The BBC and our UK govt haven't. Stuck in a time warp for a "glorious" period they still fawn over.

This is not a pop at you but I get frustrated that the best the media can come up with is "gaffes".

Certainly some fit into that category but others are just straight out racist. If Bernard Manning said them we wouldn't be talking about legendary wit or dry sense of humour.

And like all those of privilege, my main problem is no one would dare say anything to him. The example below sticks out for me, along with all the racism:

32. "You bloody silly fool!" To an elderly car park attendant who made the mistake of not recognising him at Cambridge University in 1997.

Happy to dish out his brand of humour but quick to anger if one of the plebs dares step out of line.

I find the whole Royal family nauseating and the media in the last few days has been a joke, especially given 150k souls, many younger than Philip, have lost their lives prematurely in the last year.

I just find myself more and more disconnected with the UK as time goes on.

What public opinion are you talking about? And which part of the UK are you basing it on? There are plenty who still worship the royals.

I’m sure there are, but nowhere near the levels that there were previously ...over 100,000 complaints to the BBC over too much coverage would be an indication that it is a widespread view - a UK TV record of complaints

That map will have the Huns both devastated and seething in equal measure.

I saw that study a few years ago. The colour representation is misleading - ALL regions of the UK are pro-royal, the ones in pink are just less pro-royal than the average.

What's up with North Aberdeenshire?

Are there actual people there or is just a big royal hunting ground round Balmoral? 😂

An American view. It's clueless as you would expect.

"Well when someone is close to 100 years of age, there is no tragedy. The tragedy is that the Queen and Prince Philip refused to speak out publicly when the UK was going down the drain. And now it is a Fascist/Communist country which has been taken over by foreign and internal enemies. No real monarch would have silently stood by while traitors ruled the roost. The monarchy itself was an anachronism, and should have ended when Canada became an independent country."

Much in that I agree with although I would never expect the Monarchy to do anything positive in terms of the political process. The Queen to be fair has done her best to stay clear of not obstructing democracy. The Tory Leader has done a good enough job of that without any Royal intervention.

Apart from the 100's of times her and Charles have interfered to suit their interests.

TBF Monarchy is the very definition of conservatism. It’s whole ideal is there’s a person who is better than you by virtue of who one of their parents are.

The Bloody anthem of the U.K. is asking for God (a conceptual entity) to persevere the Queen!

Nonsense. Sooner they (or we) are shot of them the better.

Fair enough, she's the Queen of Leith as well as everywhere else.

What about the purvey? And I don’t mean Prince Andrew (you kind of have to say it in a southern English accent)

In all honesty I have never known any straight man to worship the Royals.
When you see any parade they are involved in they are attended by women and tourists.

When the Queen dies I can't see the Royals being box office anymore.
Charles will prop it up for a while but the direction of travel will be very much down.

I think Charles will be a big step back in comparison to the Queen, & perception/acceptance may also be affected by whether or not Camilla takes the title of queen, but there seems more appetite for a William monarchy.

Camillla will not take the title of Queen, already confirmed some time ago that her title will be Princess should Charles become King.

Jeez, some fathers will have to rethink their nicknames for their daughters.
