I’d second that .. No interest in NBA, but one of my most favourite sports documentaries of all time
If you like adventure racing ..the “eco-challenge- worlds toughest race” on Amazon prime is fun and gripping to watch ..following international competitors go through what can only be described as incredible challenges and endurance

The World at War narrated by Laurence Olivier is an absolute classic documentary. If you haven't seen it it's well worth a few hours of your time.
Fahrenheit 11/9 is worth a watch just for the sheer 'how the **** did they get away with that' element.
If you like sporting documentaries then Free Solo, The Barkley Marathons:The Race That Eats it's Young, Icarus, Senna, Pumping Iron and Freedom's Fury all spring to mind as worth a watch.

OJ: Made in America is pretty amazing - think it’s about 10 hours worth.
The Defiant Ones on Netflix about Dr Dre also very good IMO.
There’s also a film about Rockfield (the music studio) which is great if you’re into 90s music. Contributions from LG, Tim Burgess etc.

Dear Zachary. Quite astonishing doc, but truly heartbreaking - can't say more. Maybe one for the brighter nights.
Project Nim - couple raise a chimp. Really weird folk in this world.
King of Kong - as mentioned above.

• Hitsville: The Making Of Mowtown - best documentary I’ve seen on Mowtown by a distance (Sky Arts)
• Rock N Roll Island: Where Legends Were Born - a small island in London that was the place to be where all the big 60s bands played before they were big (BBC IPlayer)
• World War 2 In Colour - Netflix
• Jim & Andy - Jim Carey method acting and staying in character playing the eccentric Andy Kauffman in Man On The Moon (Netflix)
• Room 237 - documentary on The Shining looking at all Kubrick’s Easter eggs and theories like how it’s an admission he faked the moon landings etc. I’m no conspiracy theorist but quite enjoy the more plausible theories people can make without necessarily believing them.

Matty, if you haven't done so already, I'd recommend you check out the bbc iplayer, also ITV and ch4 iplayers too.
They all have whole sections full of documentaries, and if like me you're up during the night, they're perfect for watching then as they usually have subtitles available.

Did he write the book that inspired the Wire? I’ve a vague notion that I have a copy next to “Infinite Jest “ by DFW in my Just about to read pile of books.

Not seen it mentioned on here, but Ian Hislop's Fake News on BBC 4 is a good watch. Informative and entertaining. It goes back to the 19th century looking at fake news in the beginning of modern media and up to the modern day. It looks at the motivation, means and consequences of fake news and conspiracy theories. For me it didn't go far enough back in time, it could have started with the ancient Egyptians and their hieroglyphics, the Roman chroniclers or even Mr Moses coming down from a mountain top. :duck:

Not a documentary as such but Darren McGarvey's "Class Wars" is a good watch so far. Putting aside his nasal weedgie accent (that he admits he cultivates), it's a great concept for analysis. I can relate a lot to the conundrum of class dismorphism that he is looking at amongst other phenomenon in this series. If there is such a thing as upper upper class then I stem from a lower lower class background and am still at least mentally imprisoned within its walls despite probably now living what might be described as a middle class life. The first episode has made me reconsider how I actually perceive myself and sheds a bit of light on some of my own inner conflicts.

One of these ones that took 4 episodes when it could have been done in one. I watched a YouTube video on this a few years ago and didn’t learn anything new from the Netflix show that I didn’t already know from a 10 minute YT video, other than some creepy guy wants to visit her grave for closure.

I think what the Cecil hotel documentary did do well is showing how internet conspiracies and the like can be so damaging, so quickly. From saying that someone in the hotel is in on it, to the police, to a musician, to goodness knows what with evidence that was just speculation that spread like wildfire, to allow that story room to breathe made the fairly simple story at the end more striking.
Still could have cut at least one more episode out of it though.

Anyone catch the first part of the Luke Mitchell/Jodie Jones doc on Chan 5?
Its obviously edited and aimed at trying to show him as innocent. Something I have heard from a few people who were close to the case at the time, they cast doubt.
However, what annoys me in these programs is the exclusion of what they did have and how they did find him guilty - along with 4 failed appeals. There HAS to be some evidence to have convicted him. He had Donald Findlay as his defence, he would have taken the prosecution apart with ease based on what we've been fed so far.

I'm sure I read in the past that they suspected the whole Mark Kane thing was an attempt to make money from the press. Can't remember the detail but the guy that knew him was a right dodgy character.
Something also came out about the condom owner. Think he'd claimed to be by himself but got himself in a bit of a muddle when trying not to sound like a lonely w***er!

Never saw the documentary but one of my best mates is a defence lawyer, he sat through the trial as part of his training, his opinion is and always has been that personally he thinks he did have something to do with it but the evidence he was convicted on was ridiculous and it was effectively trial by media

I watched Sherpa on Netflix last night. Primarily about the 2014 avalanche that killed 16 Sherpa men but a more general look at the economic, social and cultural realities of life for the Sherpa people as mountain guides.
The disdain with which some of the rich foreigners treated them was quite shocking to watch. The total lack of empathy to their demands after they had watched their friends and family killed was bewildering. The simple fact is without the Sherpas Everest would remain out of reach for these people paying or receiving tens of thousands of pounds to go there. The share of the danger the Sherpas face compared to the money they earn and conditions they live in is disproportionate. The expedition companies profess to care but it's not hard to see the mask slip and the Nepalese Govt are quite open about their lack of care, Everest is a cash cow for them.
I'd recommend it although prepare to be angry by the end of it.

When I was at school and learnt about Everest (loved learning about all that exploring stuff) it was all about Sir Edmund Hillary, some guy called Sherpa tensing got a mention, but the mention was he was very much the carrying the bags, showing the real hero where the mountain was, etc etc.
I only recently found out his actual name was Tensing Norgay and he was the main driver getting up the mountain and his skill and dexterity was really what made it possible.
I know some folk will hate bringing politics into this but that’s what BLM is really talking about. Prejudice right there in the way history is taught to 8 year olds in British schools.

I watched that. There were comments earlier in the thread about Netflix drawing some of these documentaries out with stuff that’s a whole series long that could have been done in an hour’s show. Well this takes it to another level. An hour and a half that could probably have been covered in 20 minutes.

Watched a 3 parter about Stephen Lawrence on BBC4 this week. It's a repeat from a few years ago, but no less shocking for it. Today is Stephen Lawrence Day, and the full story has yet to be told, 28 years on.
Also on BBC4, a weekly series about Watergate. I've been a geek about it since my teenage years. This series brings it all under 1 story. My only criticism so far is the absence of any mention of the links between the Nixon administration and the Mob.

Just watched. I've watched a lot of stuff on Everest as it fascinates me. I'll never be able to afford it but would've loved to do it.
That being said given these disasters in the past 20 odd years it's clear the guys leading the expeditions are exploiting these Sherpas and the Nepalese government are coining it in.
I understand there's a spiritual reason not to disturb the mountain too much but I do wonder why they can't airlift the equipment as high as possible to aid the Sherpas.
The Khumbu ice fall is still the easiest way to get up the mountain which tells you how dangerous it really is.

Netflix’s Last Chance U is on to season 5. It follows the fortunes of a different college American football team and the characters there each season. It had its moments, solid enough, but there’s also a spin-off Last Chance U on Netflix which is focusing on a basketball team from a junior college in East LA and it’s by far the best of them. Really great storytelling. I don’t understand why there’s so many great documentaries about basketball (Hoop Dreams, The Last Dance, this one).

I remember reading about it in some detail a few years back, interesting that they’ve made the documentary about it.
It might be the worst miscarriage of justice in history, and it was simply shameful stuff.
There was a spell there during the late 80s/early 90s where there has been some atrocious police work happening across various parts of the country that have either failed completely or struggled badly to get any sort of justice for some abysmal police work - Hillsborough, Cardiff 3/5, Daniel Morgan murder.
I wonder how much of a role the Freemasons might have had to play in ensuring those at the top avoided any sort of justice?
I’d like to think that things were better now, but…

Prior to DNA technology, getting a confession was everything to police. Given their tactics in this and other high profile wrongful convictions, you have to wonder how many other innocent people have been convicted based on false confessions, seems like cases like this were only brought to light because they had people on the outside prepared to fight for them.

I knew this was coming, but thought it was on BBC for some reason. Probably because of Louis Theroux’s involvement. Definitely one I want to watch, there’s always been an element of doubt in this case for me. I think it’s because the ones with the most to gain were the ones that found the evidence that convicted him.

I’m currently watching Phoenix Rising on Now TV. Not sure what channel it was originally on I’m assuming Sky Crime or Sky Documentaries. It’s Evan Rachel Woods story of her abuse at the hands of Marilyn Manson. I was vaguely aware of the story , but I’m actually horrified at what I’m watching. Would recommend watching it, it only has 8 days left.
I think the accounts I read previously had an air of cynicism about them regarding her story, but this has photographic and video evidence it’s shocking.

The murder of Rikki Neave - A mothers story. Can’t believe I hadn’t heard this story, very difficult to watch at times, it’s very conflicting too, it’s hard not to feel sorry for his mum, she was clearly not fit to be looking after kids, but the social work department were no help whatsoever. Bad mum or not, she didn’t deserve what happened to her.

Not watched it but, it is a terrible shame. BB was an interesting social experiment at it's outset, once Endemol and fame hungry folk decided there was huge money to be made, the programme transformed into a terrible impression of it's original self. Surprised Endemol got away with some of their conduct to be honest.
