Defensively good but offensively very poor, particularly whilst in possession. We won which is the main thing but certainly a lot of room for improvement.
Hanlon, Porteous, Stevenson, Gogic & Boyle our best performers. The rest were a mixture of ok/meh.

Strange for anyone to single out the defence for criticism today imo. Didn't concede from open play and so many of the issues came from our inability to retain possession in their half.
The balance in midfield was miles off and they had far too much time to work the ball wide. What they did throw into the middle was generally pretty well dealt with by our CBs.

Always good to get a win at the start of the season regardless of play, their goal was never a free kick and we had a stonewaller disallowed, the all round play will get better over the course of the season and that win should settle nerves, what is clear is we cannot let Boyle go at any cost if we have any ambition this season

Gogic? Looking exactly what we need in there.
Newell played well
We are top the league??
Hearts score was? Oh wait
That was bad IMO slight improvement after the double change, we’re needing to be more at it in the middle there’s no hassling or closing down, giving far too much time to teams on the ball, if we’re going to get the best out of players like allan and Boyle we need to be winning the ball higher up the park.
Left midfield as well a trouble area for years now the left back doesn’t get enough protection battered with crosses thankfully today the back 3 done well.
Plus side Newell was good, couple of flashes what Nisbet can do, Gogic wasn’t bad either

Dont think the centre backs deserve any stick, held up well under pressure the day, my main gripe is the amount of crosses that come into the box, far to many, seems like a constant barrage at times. That will b punished in future if it continues.

Thought we were excellent first half, used the ball well and created a few good chances and looked set to add to our 2-0 lead until their goal.
After half-time we seemed to have changed our shape to more of a 4-5-1 it looked like and after that Allan struggled to get into the game as no one other than Nesbitt was really darted forward for him, Wright never really got that much involved and didn't seem to know if he was playing inside or out wide. Nesbitt looked a bit lonely up that end of the park as well and struggled to make much of an impact without the likes of Boyle playing round him.
I'm sure we had reasons for changing our shape at the time but in hindsight it probably invited Kilmarnock back into the game, but I thought we defended really well in the end and its a great starting point for the season.

agree. 3 CH's did well , especially as one of them is a weakling and the other not very good. ;-). Change to 442 and Stevenson tightened us up later in the game. Doig struggled a bit as the game went on against a very experienced Burke. Will learn from it though, looks a good prospect

Pretty uninspiring stuff that! Missed first 30 minutes, what I saw was pretty poor - Killie will be disappointed at not getting a point -
Stream was mostly fine here in Germany, tv studio idea is decent, chat was ok - link up to to fan in Australia was neat, pity the Hibs TV wall has gone -
Seems to me that we lost a goal through the usual dithering around, decent strike by Burke - our two goals were well taken by Boyle. We still don't work anywhere near hard enough on the park as a team - didn't think Killie were very good, but they had us on the backfoot for far too long and we were were unable to do anything about it - better teams will punish us: so little has changed there - still, 1st game of season so 3 points is fine, I guess.

I thought Doig was a little shaky today's after a fairly solid pre season game against Celtic. Not going too give him much stick though as he was generally ok...ish and deserved his start. Much needed competition for Stevenson and I expect he'll improve going forward with more minutes under his belt.
Other than that though I agree with everything else you said. Defence was fairly solid for the most part. Nisbet was pretty poor and couldn't get in to the game. Newall was a little disappointing but was too bad. Allan got an assist but for the most part he continued to give the ball away. Wright was somewhat anonymous.
Subs changed the game and came a little later than I'd have liked. Doidge was excellent when he came on. Horgan done well to hold the ball up and run down time. Stevenson made a great block. Hallberg wasn't on for long to make much of an impact but we definitely finished better considering a really poor 2nd half.
It's the first game for some though and we're only going to get better. Good result when all is said and done! GGTTH.

Funny how before the game you would have said defence is the biggest worry.
Now following the game, defence did great(at lest centrally) and Gogic looks the part. Its our balance and ability to keep the ball midfield/forward which is the worry for me.
Overall got the job done, Gogic will be big for us, Doig did decent, Nisbet gets an assist despite not much else and Newell looking really composed in the middle. Much to build on so good stuff, onto the next one!

He's really growing on me, I think his composure is his best asset, especially in our midfield where I think we've lacked considerably in that department for a few years now.
If he keeps putting in good performances then we'll be talking about contract extensions come January so we don't lose him, here's hoping anyway.

Unseen work
01-08-2020, 04:52 PM
Kilmarnock are always a hard team to play but for me they dominated possession far too much, despite all their possession we stayed solid and I can’t remember them creating a chance or Marciano having to pull off many saves.
Couple of points for me;
Why do we have centre mids that can only do one thing or the other? Killie played with Dicker and Tshibola in there today and both were able to compete and play.
Gogic was very good imo and does small things that probably go unnoticed with a lot of people but appreciated by team mates. Tackles, headers, interceptions and covering his team mates was all there to see today and I think he will be a very good bit of business.
Newell showed signs he can play in there and put in some really good tackles and blocks, I would like to see him dictate the play a lot more though as he has the ability.
Allan was incredibly frustrating. The assist aside which was brilliant he was very poor and gave away possession countless times with little/no pressure. He also seemed to want an absolute age to pick his pass.
Hanlon and Porteous were brilliant for me today and never gave them a sniff. Both dominated everything in the air and defensively. Their team mates should be very thankful.
Boyle, well where would we be without him? I actually thought he was really quiet today but scored two goals so I’m not complaining.
Doig got taught a massive lesson off Burke who is a very good winger. On the ball he needs to be a lot more positive and drive forward, he was getting screamed at for being so deep and just giving it back to Hanlon. Think his confidence took a knock early doors. I’d still start him next week but if he continues with performances like that I think he should be loaned out.
Jack Ross deserves credit for changing from a 352 - 433 - 442. All done at the right stages and helped us massively.

Newell and Gogic good in centre mid.
Alan was dreadful.
Wright and Nisbet were quiet.
Boyle was difference.
Marciano distribution awful.
Overall good 3 points but huge improvement required if we are going ti challlenge for European place
Agree with all, but Newell needed to get closer to their midfield, including Wright and Allan, gave them too much time on the ball.

Imagine that performance without the assist, then you have Mallan. Allan is worth the bad games.
Agree 100%. Allan can be poor for half an hour then beat a man and lay it on a plate for someone to score or even bag one himself. Mallan in his first season was capable of striking a ball from distance after working a couple yards of space but he's not been doing it for the last year other than the derby game.
They're both luxury players who have to do something to justify their position and while Allan wasn't excellent by any stretch of the imagination he set up the winner and that's why we put him out on the park every week. Although admittedly an improvement is required on his showing after the assist.

I don’t think he does either, but he gives the ball away less.
FWIW I’d play one or other of them every week, and I’m happy to turn a blind eye to weaknesses in their game in favour of seeing the positives - in today’s case a match winning assist. That’s what they bring that other players being much less.
Allan still shading it for me but Mallan is a good player, a handy deputy and not someone that can play elsewhere.

Kilmarnock are always a hard team to play but for me they dominated possession far too much, despite all their possession we stayed solid and I can’t remember them creating a chance or Marciano having to pull off many saves.
Couple of points for me;
Why do we have centre mids that can only do one thing or the other?

Can’t afford? That luxury provided the second goal which essentially put the game out of reach. It’s like complaining about strikers being poor and ‘only’ scoring. Allan is in the team to find assists, he’s played 1 assisted 1. Went off and then we seen the game out. It’s the first game of the season, we aren’t going to be firing on all cylinders, we won the game and but for a wonder strike would have kept a clean sheet.

Agreed.
Midfield balance is still not right.
Gogic has to start - Newell brings calmness and touch of quality. Allan at times is playing with 10 players but his assists win games.
Felt we got stronger when subs came on.

Doidge showed today in 20 mins what a great striker he is. Not fit, put himself about, involved in everything and got thr teacup the pitch.
Nesbit doesnt seem to have these attributes at this level yet but he will learn so much from Christian.
Porteous was immense. Imagine him fully fit!!
44% possession at home is not great.

A small point but power played today. Dicker was on the bench but didnt get on (not fully fit).
From what i have seen, dicker is a very good player, like a 6ft2 mcgeouch. I'd have liked to have him at hibs and he would have been ideal today when no one in our midfield seemed to be able to put their foot on the ball and keep possesion.

Agree with your post but particularly these points. We need a Docherty type player in Allan's position. That would give goals and assists but also tackles, hassle and work rate. Ross was having to swap formation regularly as Killie were completely dominating the ball and maybe with a fit Doidge that won't happen as often as we may keep the ball better.
I like the blend of the 3 centre Halfs. McGinn is under rated imo. He doesn't make many mistakes and is pretty decent on the ball. Hanlon is also very good on the ball and then we have the aggressive presence of Porteous to give extra bite and passion. That looks a very good combination with Gogic in front helping out. Our biggest problem is retaining possession and allowing far too many balls into the box. Allan and Newell have to do more to try and help whoever plays LWB and RWB. I felt sorry for Doig at times as he had 2 players to try and mark or win the ball off.
As has been said the star of the team is Boyle. His injury may have been the biggest difference between Heck and Ross last season imo and we will miss him greatly if he goes and we can't get replacements to fill that huge void.

First half there was plenty of good stuff and some fantastic interplay. Great depth of squad with impact players on bench they will turn round plenty of games late on.
We decided to defend as a team for most of second half- very unlike hibs and cant say that aspect was easy to watch. But one that JR needed to address and that will breed confidence. The score doesnt lie. Offir very quiet and one very smart save off a hibs toe.

Brutal point. Allan picks ball up in own half, 10 seconds later- goal. Fewer of his passes will come off- because hes trying far more complex passes which most players in the league cant even see. Wasnt at his best for sure. But goodness me- enjoy yourself a little and lighten up.

Hard fought win, great start to the season, could have been a little sharper and tried to dominate the ball more but it's the first game of a very surreal period.
I was lucky enough to be able to watch the game at the ground :greengrin thought Newell was excellent, and Porteous was my Man of the Match due to his will to win and battle for every header and cross. Last 15 minutes we looked very disjointed, almost had the feel of a pre-season fixture, we lost shape a little and played too deep. For all Ofir's quality at shot stopping, his kicking is still woeful and I can't stand seeing any keeper kick straight out of play under no pressure - he really needs to improve that part of his game.
Special mention for Josh Doig, good debut.
I'm really warming to Newell - was a harsh critic when he arrived but he has undoubtedly got skill and poise and is very composed on the ball. Could be a very important player for us this season.
Biggest positive the 3 points and a clinical first half - and watching Hibs in action :aok:

He showed great skill rounding the midfielder who made a silly slide tackle. The ball to Boyle was a bog standard pass though. It was a well played pass but nothing most footballers couldn't do easily. Nisbet's assist was at least as good and he had a similar game to Allan. One great moment and the rest very disappointing.
If Allan played more simple balls he would be a far better payer. I'm not saying to stop playing those eye of the needle balls but sometimes the risk isn't worth the reward and constantly losing possession in good areas gives the opposition a great lift. I forgot he was shielding so the lack of energy and effort is maybe understandable.

Taking everything into consideration, Allan has not been guff since he returned. That said, he's not been brilliant all of the times. Today, he needed to be subbed, but he did show some good work, at times! Allan has some exceptional qualities as a footballer, but if he did it all of the times then he wouldn't be at Hibernian FC.
Allan frustrates me. He could be so good, but frustrates with the misplaced passes and the inability to track players back. I'm expecting a lot better from Allan, than what I saw today. However, he's not been guff since he returned.

I'd cut the team a lot of slack, very bizarre circumstances and a lack of a real pre-season means we are certainly not firing on all cylinders. No crowd really does affect the flow and dynamics of the game.

Allan could play safe passes, keep the ball better and track runners - but then he wouldn’t be doing his job.
His job is to try the difficult pass, to cut defences open and focus on creating. As a result, he’ll give the ball away more often than other players.
I wouldn’t want him to change, and he’ll have days when stuff will come off for him more than it did today. He’ll also have days when less comes off for him.

Genuine question... I'm not so sure.

Since Heckingbottom left we’ve been the 3rd or 4th best team in the league. So we didn’t have as far to improve as some might have you believe.
I thought we did a professional job today in difficult circumstances. Newell, McGinn and Porteous the stand outs. We’ll get better, especially when Doidge is fit.

Decisions like that from Scottish referees continue to baffle me though. He gives the corner, in turn accepting that it hit his arm, yet it's not given as a penalty?...
Don't get me wrong, I don't think that the rules should allow that to be given as a penalty as there's no intent there from the defender and not much he can do, nonetheless what's the point in making the new rules if they are not imposed.

24 games under JR
Lost 7 of them, 4 of which were against Rangers, Celtic and Aberdeen.
2 others against Ross County and Livingston were before January when he was working with the squad he inherited from Heckingbottom.
The only really bad result he has had was the derby IMO

Given that every single match now has multiple broadcast quality cameras filming the action it would have been a decent opportunity to trial some form of VAR to avoid **** ups like this from happening which is far too common in Scottish football

I'd cut the team a lot of slack, very bizarre circumstances and a lack of a real pre-season means we are certainly not firing on all cylinders. No crowd really does affect the flow and dynamics of the game.
It's a very positive start to our campaign - can't want more than a win and 3 points :aok:
Agree bizarre situation we will only get better a really good 3 points move on to next game.

Class act. Wins his headers, his positional sense from crosses/cutbacks is something else, can play from the back, his sliding tackle just before the goal was majestic. All round top performance. Dealt with everything.

Take the win and happy with the 3 points but Kilmarnock bossed and dictated the game. Was a very average performance and if we lose Boyle we will struggle big time.

For the record we had 44% possession to Kilmarnocks 56%
One less shot overall but more shots on target and more corners.
And, more importantly, more goals.

We also held onto the lead the whole of the second half

Agree they certainly didn't boss the whole game. We sat back a bit second half and should have used the ball better but even then we had the best chances with Doidge header, Boyle chance and what looked like a stick on pen.

I think Killie will be decent this season. They have a good coach and some interesting hardworking players.
Like Livi and Motherwell I wouldn’t write these teams off.
Going to be a tight league from 3rd-12th I think as teams like St Mirren have also improved.

Defence did well as a unit. Newell was the best of the midfield. Stating the obvious but we really, really need to keep Boyle.

A win is only good for a good night's sleep. If you don't fix the things that went wrong even in that win you aren't winning many more. We were under far too much pressure against a poor side recently.

In a season, no one hits top form first game, not even the first 6 games. You build into the season and it’s all about getting sharp and getting wins. We were under pressure, not once was I worried second half. We should’ve been more in front, they cut us open 0 times in the match, scored a wonder goal, then created nothing again. We could’ve scored a few more first half, Boyle and Doidge missed chances second half, should’ve had a stonewall penalty, we could easily have won 4/5-1. There’s plenty of ways to win football matches and we took absolutely no chances yesterday.

I agree but you cannot just say "we won" and that's it. The ball did not stick up front at all, that's a problem. We defended well but we definitely have things to work on.

In theory yeah, and there are games where i wouldnt start him as i dont think they would suit his skills.
But, its a team gane, and as long as there are others in the team to compensate for his weaknesses, a game like yesterday is exactly the sort of game im happy with him floating around, when he helps to set up a goal or two.

We have players who can keep the balm but 2nd half we didn’t control game enough.
When Newell and Horgan keep the ball it really helps. Even Gogic ran with the ball a few times and that was different to pass pass then go long and except strikers to keep it.
The back to middle phase of the build up needs work and ideally a midfielder with energy who can take the ball and carry it / control the game. A Latapty / SJM / Dylan / Omeonga type

Every team will have things to work on, its August.
Killie have a good manager and some decent players and have given us a few issues in recent years.
Our defence was very solid, we had some issues midfield to front and Jack Ross will see that and deal with it.
We should have had a stick on penalty and while the match was quite even we took the points.
I would much rather be building on improving the midfield and front areas during the week on the back of a win - than trying to think about how to shore up a crap defence which was what last season felt like many weeks.
Gogic will be a key player for us this season, that is a massive improvement on last year.

We started last season with a fortuitous, and extremely dull, draw against Stirling Albion.
There are things the team needs to work on, like the lack of control in midfield, but I'd argue that yesterday's result is a big improvement..

We would also have played several pre-season friendlies and competitive Betfred cup games by this point in the new season and that’s without having had a 5 month lay-off either.
Theres going to be some rustiness to contend with for us and every team in the league. The best thing that can happen is for us to pick up points in these early games while we’re getting back up to speed.

Doidge was the man for the occasion yesterday. The way the game was going the ball wouldn’t stick, Doidge is a unit and a presence, he got us up the park and in the last 10 minutes allowed us to see the game out comfortably. Gullan’s chances will come, of that I’ve no doubt.

JR reckons that there are no more signings due and little to separate 3rd-8th in the league.
If we can have a 2-1 win every week, teams can have as much possession as they like against us.

How on earth can people not be anything other than happy to come away from yesterday with 3 points in the bag? We threw a few results last season from a similar position. Great result. Sure, we were a bit rusty - but I will take it.

Delighted with the win and was good to see the new boys in action.
I’m slightly concerned JR seems like he likes to sit on a lead(said this last season as well), personally, I dont think we are good enough to do that (yet) and parts of the 2nd half yesterday started to remind me of the days of us conceding late goals nearly every game (not that we did yesterday though) :greengrin
