At least we were put out of our misery early that day
Remember that clearly. Eric Black was a great header of the ball. Seemed to hang in the air like a salmon.

We missed Gordon Rae who I think was suspended? Another League Cup where we knocked out Celtic & Rangers and still couldn't win the thing!

A lot of our team were really young and they seemed intimidated by Aberdeen.
I think it was Alex McLeish that told the story about both teams waiting in the tunnel before the match and he yelled "Come on!"... and half the Hibs players jumped out their skin.

It was my first final too. One of my mates lived in Glasgow so we went through for a day/night out the day before and I managed to spend most of my £196 monthly salary which, being paid on the last Friday of the month, was sitting in my account just asking for trouble.
Luckily my bank manager was a hibee so he was sympathetic to my plea for an overdraft when I called on the Monday. I don't think I've been in credit since. :greengrin

Went to a Bar behind the Rangers end before the Aberdeen game full of Sheep and this old Aberdeen fan spotting our HIBS scarves came across to us and said “ Enjoy your day oot boys “
On the way back we asked the Supporters Bus to drop us off at the Chesser Inn
We walked in and Willie Allan said to us “ Sorry boys no colours” George Stewart appeared behind him still wearing his HIBS blazer and said it’s ok Willie
He started talking about the old days with HIBS one of them when Arthur Duncan scored the own goal versus Der Hun he turned to George and said “ Sorry George” George Stewart said he told him not to worry about it but felt like knocking his block off
Another big game on Saturday

What I remember about the Aberdeen LC final was the way the supporters just started singing out Hibs songs at full blast in the last 10 mins. We were well beaten but weren't gonna let it get us down. We did a similar thing at the end of the Celtic SC final in 2013.

1991 was a wonderful day.
Through to Hampden to see Hibs win the League Cup and back to Edinburgh in time to see the cup being paraded en route to a Wolfsbane gig in a sweat-soaked phone box. Definitely the way to celebrate a birthday.
I'd do it all again, minus the mosh pit (old age is a bugger).

Hibs managed to squeeze past Queens to face Celtic in the quarterfinals despite making this tie more difficult for themselves than it actually was
Hibs took the lead after 10 minutes when Brian Reid failed to cut out an innocuous looking ball into the box the ball fell to Derek Riordan who made no such mistake controlling the ball with his first touch and sticking it past Colin Scott with his second. 12 minutes later HIBS added a second when Garry O’Connor rose between two defenders and headed the ball down into the path of Riordan who selected his spot and gave Scott no chance
HIBS failed to add to their lead but came close on several occasions but were made to sweat on the 90 th minute when Colin Murdock pulled down a Queens player in the box and was sent off for a second bookable offence. Alex Burke duly dispatched the spot kick past Andersson
With the clock ticking down Queens were only able to manage one last almighty stramash in the HIBS box with several having chances that were blocked and thankfully the danger was eventually cleared

HIBS however were without the injured Eddie Turnbull. Willie Ormond now taking his place in the engine room with debutante James Bradley out on the left wing

What a night of frustration it was for Eddie Turnbull’s men who left the field with their heads bowed and no wonder They had attacked from start to finish but not one stroke of luck did they have Look at this for a catalogue of woes: Five goal line clearances by Leeds One HIBS shot that hit a post One disallowed goal A succession of magnificent saves by two young Leeds goalkeepers
Young Scot John Shaw was a hero in the first half and when he retired injured on came 17 year old Glen Letheren to perform equally well
It was Glen’s first senior match and one he will never forget HIBS won’t forget it either and certainly not poor Pat Stanton As the 36000 crowd held their breath at the end of extra time skipper Pat Stanton came up to take the first penalty and struck the post All the fans knew that was that Cropley Blackley Bremner and Hazel all scored but so did Lorimer F Gray Bates Clark and Billy Bremner whose shot entered the net via the underside of the crossbar
Hibs played skilful football and never stopped attacking Alan Gordon did manage to score with a header and the Referee awarded the goal but after the Leeds players protested and after consulting his linesman the counter was ruled out for offside
Leeds defended brilliantly and no one more so than Scotland Captain Billy Bremner whose sweeper role can only be described as an exercise in studied insolence but brilliant nonetheless
Leeds only had four attacks one of which Ellam had the ball in the net but was ruled out for an infringement on Jim McArthur

I worked with Bobby Robertson's wife for a while and when she found out I was a Hibby she was very proud to tell me her husband was an ex-Hibs player. He was before my time, but whenever he's mentioned here it's never very complementary.
However, just goes to show how short or inglorious a career you may have had, ex-players generally look back on their time with affection.

Features on a programme cover (v Celtic if I’m right) in a great photo with the Colts team celebrating their King Cup win. Can’t think why anyone could be less than complimentary really, he did nothing in his time at Hibs to upset anyone. Think he lives in the Barberton area.

Looking at the match stats they had no shots on target and were totally inept as an attacking force the fact they did not concede more was down to good luck and Craig Gordon
Even although they were SPL runners up they had not won in five going into the fixture and their Manager produced a sick note going into the game so it was not a happy camp behind the scenes

I remember it more as a ten men defence and dirty tricks galore. The amount of jersey pulling whenever we had a corner was unbelievable, and there should have been at least one penalty in our favour.

Not 100% sure but here is a wee article from a Leeds United perspective
It touches on their goalkeeping situation they had just sold Gary Sprake their alleged betting scam and HIBS’ protest to UEFA for Don Revie being on the pitch during penalties
http://www.ozwhitelufc.net.au/07-11-1973%20Hibernian%20v%20LUFC.htm
IIRC the sub rule for European competition was different from domestic a squad of players 17 as opposed to two named 13 at that time

Billy confirmed that in the overall scheme of things, the UEFA cup was not all that important to Leeds but he also stressed that once you're on the pitch you give your all. He also said it was like having a free pass. He could try things he would ordinarily never do, eg the backheel on the line & on that night everything came off. Harvey McCreadie a real name from the past. The rumour at the time was that signing for Hibs got him out of jail.Stayed for a couple of months, scored a couple of goals and then went back down south.
Wow, nice one AH. I remember Harvey McCreadie scoring with a spectacular header against Motherwell, could've been '62/'63 season. It was one of my early away games, travelling through with a wee pal by train. His goal, I'm sure, was a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

The Dundee United result that Billy posted above on this day in 2012 put us top of the table with the exact same record as we have just now - played 13, won 7, drawn 3, lost 3.
We were 3 ahead of Celtic and Aberdeen with Celtic having 2 games in hand.
This season were 14 behind at the exact same stage with the exact same total. Shows how good Rangers have been.

I had a quick look on Scottish Schools website. The player I was thinking of was Derek Trail but he was a year earlier. In Jimmy's year there was also Jim McCalliog & George Gartshore who IIRC was on Hibs books but never played a 1st team game. Even in those days the West bias was ridiculous, it was unusual for an Edinburgh player to be capped.

McBride 3
The HIBS fans got their first glimpse of striker Joe McBride the man brought in to replace Colin Stein and what a home debut he had with a first half hat-trick that had the HIBS fans asking at half-time Colin who?
Shooting up the slope Joe McBride was on target after only three minutes when German Goalkeeper Neuert dropped a Jimmy O’Rourke cross at his feet for an easy tap in
In the 14th minute just after Pat Stanton had cleared a shot off the line HIBS went two up. Alex Scott chased a throw in from O’Rourke held off a tackle from Geissner crossed hard and there was McBride flying in to bullet home a header
McBride scored his third on half-time taking a Stevenson pass first time with his left foot and the despairing goalkeeper could only help the ball into the net
Into the second half and with the advantage of the slope and a strong wind HIBS were unable to add to their total indeed with 20 minutes to go Naumann took advantage of a mixup in the HIBS defence to grab a valuable away goal. Minutes later Alex Scott was cynically hacked down by two defenders and when he retaliated he was immediately sent off by the Swiss Referee
With 5 minutes to go 10 man HIBS were robbed of an obvious penalty when O’Rourke was hacked down inside the box but the Referee ignored all appeals

Funny, looking at Hibs v Motherwell in 1987. Must have been early days in Millers tenure at Hibs. How many centre halfs can you fit in a side, with Rae, Hunter, MacIntyre, Mitchell and Orr all on the park. Mitchell would have been left back, Orr holding midfield and I’m assuming a very young Hunter was at right back?
Dougie Bell playing too. A very talented lad who never really made the most of his gift.

A guy like Bell was never going to offer the workrate Miller demanded from his players, guys like him and Joe McBride jnr were never going to fit into his style of play.

Hearts hadn’t lost to HIBS in 10 years but that hoodoo ended in this Edinburgh Derby
HIBS scored first through Paul Kane but then had skipper Gordon Rae sent off
Despite being down to ten men HIBS held on then in 83 minutes a sublime flick from Kane put striker Stevie Archibald through on goal leaving Hearts’ Dave McPherson trailing in his wake as he smashed the ball into Henry Smith’s bottom left hand corner at the Gorgie Road end from fully 22 yards to make it 2-0 for HIBS to the utter elation of the HIBS fans on the Gorgie Road terrace behind the goal
Dave McPherson netted an injury time consolation and it finished 2-1

HIBS lined up with Club Captain Michael Whelahan in goal and a splendid match ensued HIBS went two goals down but fought back in true Hibernian style with a hat-trick from Frank Rourke and two from Tailor Flynn
The press wrote that the cheering of the Hibernian supporters ‘baffles description’

Hopes were high for the first League clash at Easter Road against undefeated Rangers
In beautiful weather the Irish were out in force to cheer on their Easter Road favourites
The 12000 crowd packed into the Holy Ground drew a gate of £311.43
Tommy Gemmell a new Hibernian forward had a great game opening the scoring amid scenes of almost indescribable delight on the part of the home supporters
Hibernian were then denied a goal or at least a penalty when a Rangers defender fisted the ball out of the net and the Referee exHearts defender James Adams turned a blind eye
The Irish navvies threatened a break in and they vented the Referee with colourful language
Tommy Gemmell however scored another one before Rangers pulled one back before half time
Rangers equalised into the second half. Play swung from end to end and Tommy Gemmell completed his hat-trick to put HIBS back in front but again Rangers equalised to make it 3-3
In the last seconds of the game - you guessed it- the ex Hearts Referee gave Rangers a soft penalty from which they scored to win the match
As the Referee blew for full-time he tried to rush to the safety of the dressing rooms but didn’t make it as the Hibernian navvies disgracefully assaulted him in a hostile demonstration against his blatantly biased refereeing

The 3 2 game against Rangers when Johnston was sent off resulted in a Boardroom rammy. Willie Waddell demanded Rangers receive their share of the gate before they left. Tommy Younger collected the bags full of coins, almost threw Waddell down the stairs then threw the bags down after him.

The Johnston sending off caused much hilarity. He got himself into our defensive wall so that he could needle our players. The inevitable happened in that it was Johnston who got needled and he started punching and kicking,I think the last straw was when Jim Blair stamped on his foot.
Just to show off I saw Tommy Younger make a fantastic save from a Waddell header. Younger who was pretty bulky as a player had to change direction in mid air when Waddell tried to head the ball one way and it hit the wrong side of his head and went the other way.Think it was 2-2 that day.

A much maligned player who served Hibs well. Alan Sneddon was also a very personable guy the one time I meet him.
He was a good professional whom played through some really dark times at ER, didnae deserve the pelters he got. It was enough to make you wince, the Cyclops stuff and much, much worse. The old East virtually empty......there was no hiding place from the dafties, well except when we kicked up the slope.

Around 1987/88 Gordon Hunter's girlfriend worked in Crombies in Broughton Street (the bar not the butcher). Although it was far from regular, it wasn't unusual to see a crowd of Hibs players in there. I spoke with Alan Sneddon 2-3 times and he was really friendly and totally normal (they all were to be fair).

Stein 77
Hibs have known European triumphs but never one quite like this
Hibs had to win by three clear goals and concede none to knock the Italian League leaders out of the Fairs Cup.
In five minutes the fuse that lit this explosive tie was lit when fullback Bobby Duncan carried the ball forward into midfield and from 25 yards took everyone by surprise when he unleashed a thundering left foot shot that flashed past Italian international goalkeeper Dino Zoff in the Naples goal high into the net
Peter Cormack was then pulled down inside the box but the Referee only awarded an indirect free kick that was cleared
Pat Stanton then had a header from a Pat Quinn freekick brilliantly saved by Zoff
Alan McGraw then joined in the action with a powerful shot that was deflected past the post before Colin Stein had a shot cleared off the line by Bianchi
Naples were turning physical and in fairness to the Referee this did not go unnoticed as they continued to rack up fouls ( 23 in the first half).
With the pressure mounting on the Italian goal HIBS made the breakthrough their play deserved just before half-time. Stein made it by his sheer determination in carrying the ball almost to the Naples by-line and then cutting it across goal Zoff fumbled and Quinn racing in hit a hard low shot into the net off the upright
At half-time Napoli sacrificed an attacker for a defender but it was too little too late as HIBS now had their tails up
In the second half as HIBS kicked down the slope it was attack after attack
In 67 minutes Easter Road went radge Stein won a corner Alex Scott swung it well away from Zoff and Peter Cormack rose in the box jumping at least a foot higher than everyone else to send a header beyond the goalkeeper
Two minutes later the fans were singing “Easy Easy” as Pat Stanton headed home number four at the back post courtesy of another splendid Scott cross
Zoff then dropped on a header from Stein before Girardo was sent off for kicking out at Eric Stevenson when they were both lying on the ground in front of the Stand
In 79 minutes a Napoli clearance was intercepted and Stein was sent through on goal to complete the scoring

I suspect the relationship between Turnbull and Hart was never an easy one. It probably reached some kind of status quo when the team were performing, but by the time Harper was sold on at a massive loss, I reckon Hart had had enough. It was downhill from there on, with the sale/ swapping of guys like Munro, Schaedler, Stanton, then Smith, Bremner, Brownlie and Blackley. Hibs were on their knees by the end of the decade. An unbelievable state of affairs, given where they had been only a few years earlier.

George Best’s much awaited home debut that attracted an unprecedented 20622 fans to witness relegation haunted HIBS’ fight for Premier League survival against Bertie Auld’s highly defensive Partick Thistle

Hibs were cheered off the pitch at half-time. George had been in fine form showing delightful touches on the ball testing Thistle goalkeeper Rough with a long range free-kick and one 50 yard pass to Tony Higgins can only be described as top drawer
In the second half Thistle came out of their defensive shell and really stepped up the pressure Jim McArthur saved a penalty from McAdam Alex O’Hara pulled a goal back with 19 minutes still to go and the genuine HIBS fans in the large crowd started to bite their finger nails

You've got a good general feel for the relationship but Tom Hart kept faith in ET probably longer than he should have. When he realised Eddie needed to go, TH made him an extremely generous & far sighted offer. Eddie took the offer as an insult & rejected it which eventually left TH no option but to sack him.

Willie McCartney was starting to mould a fine young team that would be the precursor to the famous five and many other fine players
Hibs found themselves down 2-4 early in the second half struggling and James McLean had to leave the field through injury leaving HIBS down to 10 men
This was to act as the catalyst for a fight back as Arthur Milne added a double to Willie Rice’s earlier goal direct from a free kick and a goal from Tommy McIntyre to level the score at 4-4
Sadly their efforts were not to yield the point they so richly deserved as Murphy of Celtic scored past Jimmy Kerr in the last minute
Murphy looked to be blatantly offside the Referee hesitated consulted his linesman and awarded the goal amid sincere Hibernian protests, to the amazement of the gathered press and to the great joy of the Celtic supporters

After the half hour Alex Edwards - tongue firmly in cheek- threads a pass through the St Johnstone defence releasing Jimmy O’Rourke down the right wing Jimmy hits the byline and cuts the ball back to John Hazel for a tap in
Into the second half and Mickey appears out on the left wing receives a quick throw in from Hazel and nips inside the box to curl a worldy past the Saints keeper into his top left hand corner from a tight angle

Enjoyed the clip v Raith Rovers. Michael O’Neill showing how to take a ball from defence to attack before providing a lovely cross for Keith. Shame he missed a golden chance on his right foot near the end though. Billy Findlay, Hibs had high hoped for him, but he never really fulfilled them. Some other great players on show. Graeme Mitchell, a silky defender. Maybe just lacked a bit pace, but I always liked his style. Jacksona too, he was great for Hibs, played his best football here, no doubt about that.

:agree:
I too was surprised at O’Neill’s miss just needed more direction and pace not like him at all
I remember watching him play for HIBS in a night time Cup tie at Firhill for Thrills he was totally unplayable
Loved Graham Mitchell as you say loved his style all left foot a great servant to our great club
Billy Findlay was a major disappointment especially after signing an unprecedented at the time 5 year deal but took his goal well in the clip
Shaun Dennis must have given himself a nose bleed at the death up there trying to score against the cabbage :greengrin
GGTTH
The Johnston sending off caused much hilarity. He got himself into our defensive wall so that he could needle our players. The inevitable happened in that it was Johnston who got needled and he started punching and kicking,I think the last straw was when Jim Blair stamped on his foot.
Just to show off I saw Tommy Younger make a fantastic save from a Waddell header. Younger who was pretty bulky as a player had to change direction in mid air when Waddell tried to head the ball one way and it hit the wrong side of his head and went the other way.Think it was 2-2 that day.
It was a horrible misty night as well and probably the only good game Jim Blair had for us. Two goals and getting Willie Jonston sent off what more could you ask. I was at the game with my husband and we always used to remember it as Jim Blair's game
In the 70s and 80s. If ever we went to Morton it always seemed to be pouring rain ...I recall a late 70s midweek game - possibly one of the coldest and wettest I’ve experienced...
That's how I remember it too. It was even raining in the the first game of our "great adventure" in the first division

The game is probably best remembered for Erich Schaedler making his debut as a half-time sub for Johnny Hamilton clattering into midfield general Peter Cormack with a typically robust high octane tackle at 100mph resulting in the #10 being carried off on a stretcher
This incident happened within minutes of Schaedler coming on and Cormack escaped with a badly bruised leg

Hibernian won this game in Pollockshaws but the home team put in a protest on the grounds that they had scored a perfectly good goal that the Referee had deemed to be offside
The SFA upheld their appeal and a replay was ordered
Hibernian were furious because they had previously lost an appeal themselves being told at the time that the Referee’s decision is always final
There was a bitter feeling that the SFA’s decision had been motivated by anti-Irish prejudice but Father Hannan calmed things down and told his players to prepare for the replay
The match was replayed on 8th December near Lady Road and the game finished 2-2
The SFA had previously ruled that in the event of a draw both teams would progress to the next round

League Cup final 1972. Coming so soon after that horrible Scottish Cup final..... what a victory for the Hibees. So fitting that it was KIng Paddy and Jimmy O'Rourke who got the goals that made the difference
I remember listening on the radio to it and the house going mental at the final whistle. My auld ma ( she was some woman) ended up in the North British hotel that night and returned home with Pat Stanton 's signature in large felt tip right down her arm.
That was a golden period of football for me. Games v Sporting Lisbon, Fc Besa, the cup final and then the Ayr Utd 8-1 game. All leading us to the greatest game in history. I was only a laddie, but those days are etched on my Hibernian consciousness forever.

I remember Feyenoord were top of the Dutch League It was a baltic night and they could not handle Jukes’ power and pace He had a sprint coach had worked on his upper body strength and must have laid them both on a plate for Slim Steve Cowan as per :greengrin
The Juke was on a different level

Durie was a great young player and strong for his age without the extra fitness coaching.
Unfortunately, like most decent young Hibs players, he was soon sold and left for Chelsea at the end of that season.

Dunfermline Athletic 1 v 1 Hibernian
Alan Gordon opened the scoring Shades was sent off and Alex Kinninmouth equalised for the Pars
The game was significant in that it was Alan Gordon’s last game for HIBS
Got to this game early and was at the ground as the team bus arrived. Tom Hart came over and spoke to me and my mate. Then to our astonishment gave us two complimentary tickets for the stand.

My memory is of him limping at the half way line in his last couple of games when the big clubs were hovering
If the ball came anywhere near him he would be off after it at a rate of knots but you always felt he wouldn’t be at HIBS long
Any time he is asked about his time at HIBS he always has good things to say

All the goals came in the second half
Mixu Paatelainen took advantage of hesitation by the Motherwell goalkeeper Stephen Woods after he fumbled a Franck Sauzee shot to give HIBS the lead
John Spencer then pulled one back for Motherwell before Pat McGinlay gave HIBS the lead with an acrobatic overhead kick
That man Spencer again equalised for Motherwell with a well taken individual goal

A cracking game at Easter Road
Motherwell dominated the first half missing three decent chances HIBS came more into it but turned round 0-0 at half-time
The second half saw four goals in 13 minutes The first when Keith Wright headed home a Joe Tortolano cross Tommy Coyne then scored a quick fire double for Motherwell. Billy Findlay then equalised for HIBS just one minute after Coyne’s second goal
Motherwell’s Miodrag Krivokapic was then sent off for fouling Keith Wright before the winner came from an unlikely source when Graham Mitchell headed home a Joe Tortolano corner

'before the winner came from an unlikely source when Graham Mitchell headed home a Joe Tortolano corner'
Remember this very well as there was a guy who used to stand near us on the East Terracing that none of my lot really liked as he used to shout utter nonsense regularly (he was a real ar*ehole). This time, he decided that Mitchell was to be the player that he would berate, constantly, throughout the game. Well, when Mitchell scored the winner every one of us made of point of celebrating in his direction and IIRC he was very rarely, if ever, heard from again!

Collins low centre of gravity great upper body strength tricky on the ball difficult to get off the ball PMA
Durie power pace left foot right foot good in the air ( scored a hat-trick versus them in the Scottish Cup Final)
If we could have kept all our players over the years you could start another thread with the possibilities

We had a late winner against Dunfermline around that time too (sorry if already covered in an earlier OTDIH). We were just complete rock n roll at that point.
The Motherwell game was a beauty. All the half times were in our favour apart from our own. Second half was a great battle and the full times stayed as they had been 45 minutes earlier. A really good day.

1-0 up from the first leg HIBS failed to heed the warning when Van Der Linden raced clear of the HIBS defenders who waited on the offside flag but it did not come the Dutch forward drew Ronnie Simpson but to the relief of the poor 5000 crowd he fired past the upright
The Dutch were not to be so profligate with their next raid when they squared the tie on the night.
In 23 minutes Van Der Linden sent over a cross and Geurtsen met it full on with his head to divert it past Simpson
Hibs equalised within two minutes with a brilliant goal. Gerry Baker tamed a pass from Scott slipped it ahead of Westphaal and slammed a wonderful shot from a narrow angle past Van Zoghel
Hibs took the lead on the night and went two goals up on aggregate two minutes into the second half when the ball broke to Morris Stevenson from a Jim Scott corner and he hammered the ball through a forest of legs into the net
The Dutch when they realised the tie was slipping away from them resorted to roughhouse tactics in particular their giant of a centre half Dacserv who played the role of pantomime villain
This game is best remembered for being the debut game of club legend Jimmy O’Rourke who the press described as ‘being the victim of some rough challenges but nothing the Dutch could do could hide the promise of this sturdy youngster He looks to have the lot, sturdy build, speed, brains and abounding confidence’
Jimmy twice went close once with a header that just cleared the crossbar and one shot that whizzed past the post
Jimmy would go on to play for Hibernian for 12 years scoring 122 goals in 325 appearances
