Midfield set up much more fluid, Allan and Newell in particular just free to get on the ball when we’re attacking.

When you’ve got Allan it’s tricky to play him, wide players and 2 strikers.

This set up suits everyone much better.

Two up front and dropping Mallan has definitely helped. There's got to be more too it than that though. Players generally trying harder cause they've got a point to prove?

You tend to get a response from players when a manager has left but there's a lot more positivity from the players and they look to be unshackled from Heckingbottom's game plan.

You're probably right and perhaps I'm being a little harsh but I need to see more from Mallan's all round game. I'm one of those who think Mallan and Alan in the same midfield causes us more problems irrespective of what they offer from an attacking point of view. Maybe there is a way to play them both though and maybe this formation would offer that.

How is Newell playing?


I’ve been one of his biggest critics this season but credit where it’s due, he’s put in a shift. Linked up well with Stevenson down the left and unlucky not to have scored when his effort in the 1st half hit the post.

By all accounts Hearts have been cavalier in their approach and we're putting on a show as well. The 'negative' approach being successful is very much a thing of the past.

Paradoxically, that'll give us a better chance in derbies as we tend to fare better against Hearts when they try to play attacking football.
