View Full Version : How will Scotland vote come September 18th?
Is that a prediction or the latest poll?
prediction i don't tend to follow opinion polls when it comes to elections etc look how wrong they was in 2011, having been on the talking to people on the streets for the past year and taking part in street stalls and canvasing going to events the momentum is with YES and my prediction will be close to 60-40 in favor of yes

I dont think so, if Yes win then it ll be tight.

I think a win either way will be very tight, which brings it's own problems.
Given that a few months ago, polls were predicting a double digits win for No... now we're into fractions of a percent.
I simply have no idea how this will turn out. I don't believe there is a silent majority for no. Equally, I have no idea how or why 97% of the electorate have signed up and what that means.
I don't believe the polls because they are so superficial, especially with so many people signed up to vote, most polls being phone polls to landlines - who even uses one of those these days??!?

I think Nos silent majority chat comes from the past year or so, when the polls and opinion was 60/40 towards No ,i think that has gone out the window the past couple of months though..
Having wanted Scottish independence all my life, to come close and not win on Friday is genuinely going to break my heart. Obviously a win whatever the margin will be amazing

Im not sure about a silent 'majority' but I'm fairly certain that there are many silent no voters just going about their business and not getting caught up in the debate.
of course this could work both ways. My girlfriend for example is swaying towards yes but is not getting too involved in anything and is generally playing her cards close to her chest because she can see how much divide this is causing. She tends not to discuss it much... Even with me :greengrin

If ever there was a day when the expression "Close your eyes, lie back and think of England" was relevant, then 18th Sept is it.

There was also a thread about the Telegraph's dead soldier headline. There were a hell of a lot of masks fell and the abuse thrown at the Scots lads who expressed their distaste with the headline was disgusting to say the least.
Took me right back to my army days it did. :greengrin

Okay. (I suppose it applies mostly to the undecided). Here's what I was meaning ...
Think of what you are giving up - i.e. the Union with England, etc. That may be important to you.
Think of what you are getting out of - i.e. the Union with England, etc. That might be important to you.
That was the sentiment I was trying to get across.

2012 census (P/C in Scotland) = 35% P, 15% C

No, it's really not. The Scotland-England union of 1707 created Great Britain. The Great Britain-Ireland union of 1800 created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (subsequently amended with an 'N'). Poor old Wales was incorporated into England by conquest.

:nerd: Pedantry alert (with apologies)...is Great Britain not just the name of the largest of the British Isles, with the 'Kingdom of Great Britain' being the name for the political entity that was established in 1707? As far as I'm aware, we will remain part of Great Britain until there is some sort of massive seismic event that rips the island apart, or someone saws us off at the border.

Three days to go and we still don't know how an independent Scotland would respond to a massive seismic event that rips the island apart.
No doubt it will be Westminster's fault but what's your Plan A, Salmond?
I'm not even asking for a Plan B just tell us what Plan A is!

And then, boom... sail off into the North Sea, taking care that our territorial waters still include the juiciest of the oil fields.

My feeling (once again) is that there are a lot of people that genuinely believe in the Union and many others that believe in Independence.
I have no issue with anyone voting for what they really believe in. That is to be admired in a Democracy. Even though I'm in the Yes camp, I admire posters like Beefster and Eyrie who are very passionate in their belief in the Union and have tried to present their case logically.
The problem is that there are also lots of people that either do not have a particularly strong allegiance to either side or really don't know. IMHO, it must be very difficult for them to make an informed decision given a Government backed 'Project Fear' campaign and the obvious bias of the printed press.
Given the third category, and its circumstances, I think there'll be a No vote.
