Thread: Tokyo Olympics

I said it yesterday that the Madison is absolutely mental but it's probably my favourite event in the whole Olympics. The mix of endurance and sprinting is great to watch and the tactics, from what I understand of them, are fascinating.

GB looked like they were going to struggle to hold on to bronze and then suddenly in the last 8 laps they grabbed silver and nearly nabbed gold.

    Great fun.

I watched it but had to do stuff so missed what the gaps were. What were the points for the medals?

Edit. Ignore me, I looked it up. 43, 40 and 40.

It looked like France were going to blow everyone away but couldn't maintain the lead. Very tactical race compared to the women's race.

    Denmark 43
    GB 40
    France 40
    Belgium 4th on 32

Big gap back after that. No one managed to gain a lap.

There is no such thing as too much yarn, just not enough time.

There's showjumping on at the moment and I like the attitude of this Lithuanian horse. Couple of the jumps he just hasn't fancied and no one is making him jump them.

I was impressed by the Modern Pentathlon, running for a while and every so often stopping to fire a laser gun at a target, for me that takes a lot of skill, controlling your breathing every so often like that then running off again.

It amuses me that the horse gets described as ‘opinionated’ when he’s going the wrong way

I like when they do what they want, I was saying to someone the other day that I know they will be very very well treated but the horse didn't sign up for it did it, do what you want pal

Sifan Hassan is the athlete of the games for me.

Gold in the 10000m, gold in the 5000, bronze in the 1500m
    .

    That's almost superhuman.

Fantastic bronze for Kerr in the 1500m, almost got silver and just outside No Farah's British record.

No one beats Ingebritsen at this distance. He's sensational and his work ethic is second to none.

Unlucky for GB in the mens 4 x 100m. Topper of a run on the last leg for Italy.

No really understanding how Asher-Smith was unfit to run in individual events but ok for the relay? They done well to get a bronze all the same.
You can say what you like about relay runners but, you've got to hand it to them.

Brilliant medal for Josh and so refreshing to see an interview without a tear, he comes across as a very confident young man, here's hoping he can kick on from here and be better than the Norwegian.

Haha...with the Fringe being scaled back this year, you might be a contender for a virtual Perrier Award with that post.

You don't think the emotional interviews are understandable, given the sacrifice the athletes make to reach this level and then have that recognised by achieving the success of a medal?

I mean it's not like they're greetin' for effect like in the X Factor to get through the Judges House stage with their inevitable "journey" story.

What are you on about now? Having a go at Laura Muir shedding a tear after that? You never stop.

Ingebritsen's definitely improved, Cheriut had beaten him the last 10 times they'd raced each other.

The marathon production is annoying me, everyone in the world knows what a marathon is in miles but they are showing it in km, that and Radcliffe's commentary, hope a world record happens to shut her up quicker

That is annoying, watched the women’s race last night and I wasn’t sure how long they had to go. I now know it’s 42 kilometres, but of all the sports in the olympics surely the marathon with it’s obvious history should always be measured in miles.

Kipchoge could stop for a pint and a fag and he'd still win this.

One of the, imo unfair, criticisms of him is that he often loads up races with his pacemakers. Not today. He's done the hard work in brutal conditions himself.

And marathons are increasingly being paced and marked in kms now. It's really just bringing it into line with all the other events. Even the uber imperial Americans mark their 3 majors in metric now.

Knew he didn't have the legs to compete with the likes of Lavreysen from the Netherlands in a bunch sprint, so decided to go for a 750m time trial and blow the doors off the rest of the field. Phenomenal ride and I suspect one that will be studied by those riding the Keirin in future
